Intros are supposed to be captivating but there really is no way to make "Drupal LA Governance meeting on Saturday, July 30th @ 4pm" sound exciting. The good news is that it will be fun, it will be a learning experience and it will be a way for members to really contribute to the community.

It's exciting to see so many people discussing ideas on the la governance thread. This is a good indication that people are passionate about the group. It also shows that we all have our own ideas on what the group needs to survive. Open discussions online has it's merits but I think we are at a point where it will be more effective and efficient to discuss these ideas in person and as a group.

Benno has been very generous in offering to host this meetup at his place. If you have never been, you should at least try to make it for the beautiful ambiance. Based on the poll taken at last months main meetup and based on the 2 week sample size on doodle.com, people favor meeting over the weekend. Pete also made a good point that it's important to announce these types of meetings at least three weeks in advance. Add these ingredients together and you get an amazing meetup at Benno's on Saturday, July 30th @ 4pm.

If you plan on attending, please sign up so we know how many parking permits are needed. Also, feel free to bring food to grill and drinks to drink.

Location:

6618 De Longpre Ave,
Hollywood, CA

Let's have a productive but fun time. All members are welcome and it would be great help to us all if current and former managers are there as well. You have done so much work to get the group where it's at now and your input would be invaluable.

See you all there!

I have confirmed this very important post was never emailed to my email account. As I heard of it last night, and one other person did not get it... I spent an hour doing the investigation as detailed below.

As I have run my own email server for several hundred clients for over ten years now, I can definitely state with great expertise that this post never got to my mail server. I checked by inbox on my office computer with a global search, and I checked the mail server log file for the time stamp, within 50 minutes of the post time. To be sure, I checked another post done at 11:19:50, one of three done in the 11:19 minute, and doubled checked the unique stamp id.

I never got this post emailed to my email server. As I know one other member did not get it, I suspect that MANY DID NOT GET THIS IMPORTANT POST. That would explain the low number of sign ups?

I suggest repeating the post, perhaps by editing it and have it resent. The sooner the better.

Of course, this post of mine goes out to the same list, and many may be wondering, "What?"

So, I include the full original post below. http://groups.drupal.org/node/160664

Drupal Code Of Conduct URL - a reminder

bvirtual's picture

I started reading the recent forum about Drupal Association yesterday, and thought maybe I should post a reminder that Drupal has been around a while, and has a formal declaration of Code Of Conduct. For those Los Angeles members who were not aware, and for those who knew, here is the URL with the suggestion that everyone read it before our July 30th meeting.

http://drupal.org/dcoc

Why read it? We, members, you and I, are legally bound by it.

I have heard rumors it has been enforced. Successfully.

I do know this reminder is not needed for any LA member, as we are all SoCal, laid back, sun lovers.

Check in

chellman's picture

I haven't been able to go to the meetups lately, and most of the activity I've seen is related to DCLA. I just want to check in that this is still all-systems-go. I'd hate to knock on Benno's door and find no one there! :)

We are still on

Looking forward to see you Miguel and everybody who is attending. It's been a long time since we had a get together here at the house. I am hoping we can do more code sprints in the future and also bring back some live to the ladrupal.org website.
See You Benno

sorry benno. took my lil 4yr

Techivist's picture

sorry benno. took my lil 4yr old nephew to the grand re-opening of a park nearby (the park i grew up playing baseball in & where i learned to swim, no less!) & just got back home. doubt i'd make it over b4 6pm, so i'm gracefully bowing out. bummer tho cuz i was looking forward to seeing everyone, having some 'cue & tossin' a brew back at your pad (couldn't find your phone# so i could call instead of posting).

code sprints sound like fun tho & look forward to future "hollywood drupal" meetups. :)

lastly, might be a good idea to have a BoF @DCLA for this topic (as I'd suggested b4). hopefully, everyone's having fun.

have fun

mike stewart's picture

sorry, decided to bail on this. the idea of a BBQ sounds fun. but the idea of debating LA Drupal, on a saturday, in the middle of summer, sounds totally unfun. plus, with DCLA next week, two weekends of Drupal in a row is tough. I'm gonna go do something fun with my kids instead.

"debating LA Drupal" doesn't sound fun at all

christefano's picture

You're right, "debating LA Drupal" doesn't sound fun at all. Please don't skip the organizers' meetup just because you think it's going to be a debate. The other reasons you give are understandable, but I think you'd be surprised if came tomorrow with an open mind.

Here's what I'm envisioning: everyone having good conversation over good food and getting to know one another better, discovering the challenges that individuals and organizers in LA Drupal are facing and finding ways to help everyone toward their goals. There's also an increasing amount of money going into the LA Drupal Association bank account and I think we need to make decisions about how to track, spend and otherwise protect the community's money.

We'll see how it goes. This type of organizers' meetup hasn't been done before and I look forward to seeing who shows up. That's all I have to add. I've said everything else already at http://groups.drupal.org/node/158864#comment-542919

I think the word "governance" has hurt this discussion somewhat. It flies against other words I like more, like teamwork, empowerment and leadership development. My guess is that the "governance" word came from the process that the Drupal Association is going through to change itself from a volunteer-run organization to using a paid-staff model:

   http://association.drupal.org/node/1119

An important distinction to make here is that LA Drupal is a user group with unpaid volunteers. We don't have much in the way of physical assets or monetary resources and the real wealth we have is in our people and the time they're willing to volunteer.

I don't think "governance" in this group is going to work unless it's self-governance, and for that to succeed in an organized way I strongly feel we must first share our individual goals and visions and be willing to dedicate time to help one another toward them. We also need to be willing to show up, resolve any misunderstandings along the way and agree to disagree whenever there is conflict.

I was surprised to hear last month that many of the organizers in our group still don't know one other. Whether it's top-down, a doacracy or something that's consensus-based, it seems to me that knowing one another is a very basic requirement for any leadership model. To that end I'm really looking forward to the organizers' meetup on the 30th:

If interested members and volunteers get together and end up deciding to elect / select one person to make sure that things happen, so be it. Regardless of what happens, I'd like to keep doing the things I'm already doing, like securing venues, organizing meetups and special events, presenting, finding and encouraging new speakers, uploading presentation videos to blip.tv, getting raffle prizes, system administration of the LA Drupal server, promoting our community and its members at meetups and on Twitter, reaching out to countless businesses that use Drupal, inviting them to our meetups, and so on.

Just securing venues is a job on its own. I've worked hard with others to open doors at venues, including SDS (with Phil Cady), Oversee (with Miguel), Media Temple (with Oliver and Lee), Spring Arts Tower (with Hsin and Steve), and most recently Droplabs (with Uzi, Blake, Lee, Ron, Paul and Jeremy).

This is is all work, but it's collaborative and fun for me and I'm continually grateful to everyone who has allowed me to do these things. I'm amazed by everyone who has allowed me to support them do what they want to do. It's when we have similar goals and support one another openly and transparently that we see what teamwork, empowerment and leadership development are all about.

I plan to attend

I'll be there a bit late. I'm hosting a teens Go (WeiChi) club at the Monrovia Library from 2 to 4. I should be there around 5. My hearing's so poor I probably won't participate much in organizing, but will enjoy meeting folks I don't yet know, and touching base again with the community.
