Start:
2009-04-09 18:00 - 20:30 America/Los_Angeles
Event type:
Training (free or commercial)

LA Drupal community training + learning event.

Many of us learn best in a team or group, and this is what we're offering. Come join us and reduce the gap of your Drupal knowledge. These study group meetings are limited in size and are just one way we at LA Drupal are helping push Drupal forward in our area. The plan is to cover a chapter or two per meeting from popular Drupal books, like Pro Drupal Development 2nd Ed. (Apress), or Learning Drupal 6 Module Development. by Pakt Publishing.

Where? Downtown Long Beach easy walking from Bus or Train as well as ample parking. www.Juxtaflo.com has been kind enough to offer us their offices for a meetup. I think we can fit 6-8 people comfortably - possibly a few more if you're willing to sit on a floor or hold a laptop on your lap. I'm also looking for a larger Long Beach venue, especially for future meetings, but this was available on short notice.

When: Thursday April 9th, 6 - 830pm
What: Bring laptop. Bring book. We may have a few extra to buy - but let us know in advance. Please preinstall www.yugma.com client if you'd like to watch or share screen with the group. Yugma also opens the possibility of remote participation.
Where: Juxtaflo Design Studio - Map to: [http://tinyurl.com/map-to-juxtaflo | 235 E. Broadway, Suite 324, Long Beach, CA 90802]
- cheaper parking across the street. nearly/FREE street parking on Broadway West of Long Beach blvd - CHECK STREET SIGNS!

Note: If the meeting is filled up - please contact me to be put on a wait list. If you're not certain you can make it - please let me know - unless we get a larger venue space is very limited for this session.

Sounds interesting...

...but why not use this as an opportunity to interface with other training grounds like the Drupal Dojo? The community has already kicked in $$ to use this for screensharing and virtual collaboration - http://groups.drupal.org/node/19798 - might be a great way to broadcast valuable learning material to a worldwide audience.

DimDim doesn't support FOSS OS's

mike stewart's picture

In a nutshell DimDim doesn't support FOSS OS's. Yugma does. Until I setup a VNC relay, I've got to go with what works. plus Yugma is free for under 20 users.

Dojo is more about training & teaching. This is more of a study group than anything.

We're In For Remote Drupal Training

Susan Rust's picture

Mike: Love the idea and the strategy. If you go remote, like Drupal Dojo or such we would love to participate. We're in San Diego and can't quite find the time to drive up and play. Let me know if we can help. Thanks for leading.

Count me in, Mike!

Sounds like a great idea & thx for putting it together along w/the folks at Juxtaflo for offering up the space. Learning collaboratively is always more fun.

COOL

What a great idea. I am so looking forward to this (plus a couple of hours away from the babies :-) )

PS> Which book are we bringing? I have pro drupal development but not learning drupal 6 module development, so if it's that one, I'll buy one from you there if possible.

Nik

Glad you can make it. I

Glad you can make it. I like that I'm not driving 45-60minutes for a Drupal event. :-P

We decided to start with Pro Drupal Dev - since more people already have it - and if not, it's stocked at a lot of local bookstores. If it works well, maybe we'll go more dojo style like gus suggested - but figure one step at a time is best.

Attending, but remotely

Just FYI, I will be attending remotely.

Attending remotely

Will skip the drive and attend remotely -- hopefully, someone can use the seat I freed up.

Freeing up another seat

Miguel-gdo's picture

Laptop died as I fired it up this morning so figured I should bow out & free up a seat in case I cannot get it fixed by tonite.

Thx for putting this great idea together, folks, & hope to make it out next time. Cya tonite remotely (gotta get Yugma tested hehe).
