Start:
2007-01-10 15:00 America/Los_Angeles
Event type:
User group meeting

Hardcore users and the mildly interested, come relish in the chance to meet and discuss!

If you didn't already know, we're gonna be in force next weekend at Philiippe's.
Check out the complete details here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/2880
(Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Richard!)

The question is: What do you want to get out of this meeting?
Whether you can make it or not, what would you like to see happen?

Let's use this thread to air our ideas about what getting together really means, and what the L.A. Drupallers should really be all about. Post it here, and we'll be sure to take the matter up again when we meet.

I guess I'll get it started

I guess I'll get it started by saying that, personally, I'm a big fan of outreach.

My ideal conception of these meetings would be a smoky room filled with groups of people huddled around computer screens, eagerly throwing out their idea for the next section of code.
But then, we're not there yet, and this isn't NASA, and it isn't the 1970s...

But maybe to get us to there, I propose that all those so inclined bring laptops to first few meetings, and I will be happy to assist you in setting up a complete development environment for Drupal.

This could also serve as our selling point: even those who've never seen it before could join in, experience the enthusiam, and walk away a converted user.

Human Contect & Affirmation

Having recently hosted Richard Stallman, I have come to realize that the Revolution which Syndication offers (RSS) is so staggering that few people, even RMS (Stallman) want to look at that klieg light. It will be nice to talk face to face with people who are using all the tools which Digital Lifestyle Aggregation offers, and the Drupal Platform, to do their own thing at a level and at a breath of scope which was unimaginable five years ago.

Sounds good to me

Count me in. Not for the smoke filled room, etc. but for bringing a laptop, my list of questions and my desire to help anyone I can. And hey, a development environment is a great idea. Who thought of that :-)

still not decided

Still trying to figure out if I want to take the plunge and integrate a site with drupal, or program additional features from scratch (perhaps using another framework such as cakephp).

Trying to assess how drupal can be used as a framework vs. CMS.

Also, interested in finding out it's ugly parts and how to overcome them.

Really though, I've been meaning to take a look at drupal, and am thinking perhaps this is the time to do it.

If you're interested in IDEs

If you're interested in IDEs and available tomorrow 11am PST, I highly recommend you catch the Drupal Dojo screencast on the subject. Their tutes are top notch, and I'd expect this one to be no less.

Of course, during today's meeting, I'll be throwing my weight behind Eclipse PHT with Xdebug on the Mac. (..you just can't beat the cost of free) :)
