Calling all Central Texas Drupalers! Meetups are very informal and Drupal users of all levels - new users to expert users - are encouraged to attend and participate. Be sure to introduce yourself to the group.

What

Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup!

When

Tuesday, September 4th. 7-9 pm.

Where

Four Kitchen Studios
8701 Shoal Creek Blvd Ste 303
Austin, TX 78757
Office: 512-454-6659

A very warm "Thank you!" goes out to Four Kitchen Studios for allowing us to meet at their new offices. David has provided us directions and mentioned you should "Feel free to bring food, drink, and laptops."

Why

The Austin DUG wants YOUR participation and your fellow Drupalers want to meet you, make new friends/professional contacts, and learn about how you're using Drupal.

Any ideas for our 9/4/07 meetup? We need ideas & volunteers. Please post some comments below on what it is you'd like discussed and/or presented.

By the way, we had a good turnout for our 8/14/07 meetup at Scholz Garten and I received several positive comments from some of the new folks that they were pleased with the atmosphere and that they learned a few new things - which I think is awesome! I love to hear that folks found attending a Drupal meetup worthwhile and informative. Also, Jim and Marla showed off a new site their company is rolling out later this year, and it's looking great! (I would have put their company name here but don't know if they want it publicized to the world just yet.)

Sign up by adding your "Yes, I'll be there" comment below. It is courteous and helps in planning purposes by letting both the host and the venue know how many folks will be attending.

Let's have a "show and tell" session

Walt Esquivel's picture

Dries started a thread which now contains lots of great ideas on how to structure Drupal User Group meetups. Please take a look to get some ideas on how we can do things here in good ol' Austin to make our meetups even more successful.

As for my $0.02, we haven't had a session where folks simply "show and tell" their Drupal-powered web site(s) to the group. I think it would be great if folks could do that, spending perhaps 5-10 minutes showcasing what they've done, not going too deep into the technical details, but simply going over what their site can do and showing us the benefits of this or that. Then, if some folks want to get more technical with a particular presenter's web site, they can do that later on after the presentations are done. Note: we would need someone to volunteer and provide a projector and a screen for everyone to be able to easily view things (we can't all bunch up around one person's notebook).

Anyway, that's just my idea for y'all to chew on. Feedback appreciated.

Also, I know Aaron Hawkins, a new attendee at the 8/14/07 meetup, has a great suggestion on how we can collaborate as a group on an ongoing basis and I look forward to him sharing his thoughts with the Austin DUG.

design comment on the DUG meeting space

stefanwray's picture

I arrived a bit late and sat at the end of the table. I was able to speak with Chip and Pam who were sitting on either side of me. And I could hear conversations among the people who were on the opposite sides of Chip and Pam. But I had no clue as to what was happening at the other side of the table.

(I call this a design comment because I'm talking about the design of the space and the usability or utility of it for meeting purposes).

This is a function of gathering around long tables. Invariably, the people at the ends don't know what's happening at the other end, unless there is no other sound, and unless people are talking one at a time.

So for me, the meetup had some utility. I was able to order a meal. I was able to listen to a conversation about the opposition to the Northcross Walmart site, which interested me.

One time I went to a meeting of EFF that happening in a bar. They had a microphone to overcome other bar sounds. Whoever had the microphone could speak. The mic was passed to whomever felt like taking it next. People focused attention on the person with the mic. Even though the bar was full of a lot of other people, everyone there was able to hear whomever was speaking because there was only one person speaking at a time and their voice was amplified.

This EFF overcame the design problem that is often inherent in bars. Without amplified sound, bars are designed more for one-to-few, not one-to-many conversations.

So my suggestions are to consider quiet spaces with round tables or where people can sit in a manner where they are more or less equi-distant from the center. Or consider some type of amplification as EFF did.

If it doesn't rain, the back area of the Spider House could work. http://www.spiderhousecafe.com/

That area has a screen built-in if we needed to project. It is outside.

I've screened something there before.

It'd be a good place for show and tell, if we set up a projector and laptop.

I agree that bars aren't ideal

Walt Esquivel's picture

Hey Stefan,

Thanks for your comments and I agree that Scholz is not an ideal setting. I could hear those immediately next to me but that was about it. I think that unless we have a room or office for our meetups where there's a fair amount of quiet or, as you indicated, we use a speaker system of some sort at a bar, it's going to be quite difficult to hear what folks are saying a table or more away.

I need some folks to start stepping up and setting up our meetups, which I've been doing since January. Would you like to play a more active role and help select venues along with the necessary logistics? That would be very welcome. If you know of anyone that wants to help out in arranging our meetups, that would, likewise, be very welcome.

Thanks!

Meeting ideas, offer of meeting place

Jon_Roland-gdo's picture

I would like to focus on setting up a Drupal site and implementing as many of the basics as possible to come up with what looks like a professional site. Even those of us who are experienced could use a review of the basics.

Four Kitchens has a great place to meet but if we need another place in the future there is a house available at 7711 Mullen. It has a large livingroom with a white wall for use as a screen, and I have a projection monitor and fast broadband with both Roadrunner and DSL. Only thing I don't have is tables of seating for more than 8 people, so people would need to bring their own chairs, and perhaps a long table if we want to rest our laptops on something. The house is not far from Four Kitchens.

I had fun

I enjoyed the meeting tonight, guys. It was great to meet you and very interesting conversations. The input from David was very helpful to me and I hope I was able to shed some light on some of the more commonly used Drupal mods. If you want a great list of them, listen to the Lullabot top 40 Drupal modules podcast.

I'd like to offer the SpryDev offices for a future meeting. We've got about 20 chairs, a projector, and some massively huge markerboards. It's a bit further north at the McNeil & 183 intersection.

Let's set an agenda for future meetings and see if we can't get the interest up. The more input we have the more fun this could be.

Thanks for allowing us to look at mods you use

Walt Esquivel's picture

Hey Ben,

Thanks for being part of the group and especially for giving us the overview of what modules you're using on your site.

Although we only got about halfway through your list of modules due to time constraints, you presented it very well. I realize you were put on the spot with it being your first meetup with us, but you did great! I hope more folks will be willing to do "show and tell" on mods they use in the future.
