Open Media Project

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This group is where users and developers of the Knight sponsored Open Media Project share information, discussions, and documentation. The Open Media Project is both a suite of modules based on the system developed by Denver Open Media and the group of 7 development partners who are contributing development, testing, documentation, training or other resources to make the Open Media modules more usable for both the PEG and Drupal communities.

The primary goal of the Open Media Project is to leverage Drupal to give local communities more control over their public access channel. The system will build on several existing modules and maintain the suite of new modules through Drupal's CVS. This is a different approach than most of the previous investments the PEG community has made in Drupal. We are also committed to developing modules that are flexible enough for a variety of uses beyond public access channels.

Current Custom Modules: Open Media Project, Open Media Show, Open Media Airing, Open Media Playback Servers, Open Media Timeslot Scheduler, Open Media Support, Internet Archive and MERCI.

Issue Importing Content Into om_project

I'm trying to import some 'project' content into Drupal using Node Import. I have about 3,000 projects that need to be added as om_project content types, and this was the method described by Kevin to get it done.

Adding another Media Mover config for H.264 or Ogg

Craig likes to ask questions via email. Whenever possible, I like to answer them in public places so that I can reference my answers when someone else asks a similar questions. This is from Craig's last email...

And in terms of help from you for next week the main thing I can think of is adding any Media Mover info for a format other than Flash to play well with non-flash smart phones so I can then start our Projects imports in earnest - I know you're holding out on me cos you have a Pre - but I didn't choose an iPhone, I was lumbered (ahem) with it.

Modifying om_show content type to work with offline media

During the DOM visit at Davis Media Access we discussed importing all of our show metadata into Drupal. We have a library of over 3000 programs produced at our facility over the last 20 years. We want to start the process of digitizing this material and making it available on our website. We also want to allow users to be able to search the programs we have available and order dubs as well as request they be played on our channel (digitized or not.)

Best Practices - Dealing with Problem Users on Your Drupal Site

One of my goals for this group is to offer best practices beyond the technical Drupal information. After getting Drupal up and running as something more than a brochureware site, everyone will run into issues managing an active online community. It's difficult to balance letting users communicate freely and protecting your organization's brand. The more control you give users the more staff time you can potentially free up, but more problems your users have the potential to cause. Those problems can quickly suck up any time you've saved.

raSANTIAGO scripts: stuck on something

I'm trying to deal w/ script "2_person_groups.sql" and I'm having a devil of a time getting through parts of this one (and I'm sure it'll happen again later on too).

I don't understand why there's a line CONCAT("Facil import: tblPerson.PersonID=", PersonID)   AS description, -- it seems to me that this pulls in a user ID number from a member and uses it as the group description. But that line makes sense in a subsequent script, so I think it might be an error due to copy and paste.

Also, the script doesn't work, at least for me at Boston.

A wide spectrum of OMP Questions for your edification

I have a bunch of Qs across the spectrum of OMP issues, any help on any of them will be muchly appreciated

MERCI first:
Where and how does one add Accessories to MERCI? I'm talking about the Batteries that come up on as "Accessories for Testing" on the Inventory Content and Reservation pages - but aren't listed in the Inventory and don't appear to have an associated Node or content type. - I'd also want to add cables, adapters, etc. via this approach and input our actual batteries, with applicable stock IDs, is it worth doing this rather than just listing them in the inventory.

Locked CCK Fields

We started locking CCK fields that are referenced by TVframe so that stations could tell the difference between fields they've added and could edit and fields that would likely cause a problem if modified. Yesterday we had an issue where PCM needed to alter a setting in a locked filed, so I thought I'd post the instructions for unlocking fields for everyone. There might be other ways to do this, but I use phpmyadmin to access the locked column in the content_node_field table.

Facl & CiviCRM YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS

raSANTIAGO's scripts for importing data into CiviCRM from original Facil data are working very well. (See: http://groups.drupal.org/node/23535) So far, I've only had to make a few modifications to the code. Especially pleased with the scripts for pulling Facil's Class data into CiviCRM's Event tables. raSANTIAGO developed these scripts for Portland Community Media and released them as open source code available to anyone in the Public Access community involved with migrating away from Facil to an open source database environment (particularly MySQL).

Task Related to OMP Sites

At the Open Media Camp in Portland, it was noted that each station would be revisited (remotely) to get every stations on the same development snapshot of the tool set. Beta stations will be posting their known issues to this thread.

Updates from Portland

The dust of beta test implementations has finally settled. Two weeks ago several members of the Deproduction staff were in Portland for the last beta implementation and some other exciting events.

Portland Community Media Beta Test Implementation
Overall, the Portland implementation of the Open Media tool set went well. They are well on the way to having a complete installation of the tool set up and running take give producers more control. Daniel Sasser did an excellent job get things configured before our on site visit. There were many lessons learned a

Correct way to set up CiviCRM for Facil data import?

On a PC at channelAustin, I established a new instance of CiviCRM on Ubuntu Server (8.04) and Drupal (6.13). The install has a separate civicrm database. The purpose of this is to have an environment other than our active development server for which to migrate data from Facil to CiviCRM. (See: http://groups.drupal.org/node/23535). It was recommended by several people to set up this separate environment. At this point, however, it's not clear to me what is the best way to replicate the civicrm database that is currently associated with the development site (or whether that is necessary).

Permissions again :-(

I'm still having massively annoying permissions issues here in Boston. Conflicts between OG's "Organic Groups Access Control", CCK's "Content Permissions", and Workflow's "Workflow Access" permissions are rampant. (Posting to Boston too for compassion and insight.)

Full Flavored Creative Commons Module Available

Blaise Alleyne has been working on an update to the Creative Commons module as part of the Google Summer of Code program and is to the point he could use some help testing the beta. The Creative Commons module is an improvement over the Creative Commons Lite module we've been implementing as part of the Open Media Project in a number of ways.

The "full flavor" CC module is better than CC lite for a number of reasons...

HTTP v. HTTPS for CiviCRM

In Portland last week, I discovered that Portland Community Media was using Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) instead of plain HTTP on the web server to protect data in CiviCRM. That makes sense. In Austin, our installation of CiviCRM is on the web server, but we haven't imported data from Facil yet. This past week, among other things, we're setting up a "data import environment", i.e. another Ubuntu instance on a PC, with Drupal and CiviCRM loaded.

Running Drupal from CVS and OMP issues?

Kevin and crew--

At OMPCamp in Portland we started (but did not conclude) a discussion about running / installing Drupal from the CVS repositories. I was under the impression that installing Drupal from CVS made updating and patching the system significantly easier. My takeaway on the conversation was that it wasn't as great an idea as I'd been led to believe.

Can you share your thoughts more completely on this idea? Is there a price to be paid for that convenience? Is it okay for other systems, just not OMP? Did I totally misread the (brief) discussion?

Thanks!

Suggestions for commercial streaming media hosting providers

Looking for suggestions for an affordable media hosting service to deploy our streaming video. ( http://www.gazettenet.com )

We have been using YouTube/Vimeo so far, but have requirements now for commercial content that is outside of the licensing for those free services.

Thanks.

Civic Pixel Updating MNN Code

Don't get too excited. It's only one small module Jacob Redding wrote. I figured I'm due a misleading headline after Open Flows posted a description of Access Center that claimed...

"These modules will be upgraded to work with Drupal 6 by the end of the year. The overall plan is to merge all code and functionality with Denver's Open Media Project as both systems move to Drupal 7".

Really?!? Seems like you would talk to the other developers working on the project before posting something like that.
