Social Networking Sites

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is the group for people who want to discuss Drupal's social networking tools. These tools include modules like Buddylist, Organic Groups, Invite, FOAF, Private message, and so forth. Sites that currently do successful social networking are:

The goal of this group is to foster communication between the developers of Drupal's social networking modules, discuss roadmaps, and collect community input.

Comparison of methods to duplicate a Drupal installation

I'm currently writing a Master's thesis with a title "Streamlining the Creation of Social Networking Sites with Drupal". In this work I have done some background research on social media and social networking sites. There is some basic functionality which I have categorized in the table below on the first column. Each column describes one method of duplicating a Drupal installation, and the last column is the combination of using installation profiles and the Features module.

Best way to present profile photos'

Hi all,

I've just joined the group as I launched a new social networking site a couple of weeks ago. I'm new to Drupal, only been using it for a month or so - my background is in wordpress and zen cart module and site development. But I thought I'd give Drupal a go on this new site.

Social networking in Drupal: issues and difficulties A simple case study

I have been working with Drupal for a while now and first of all I should say this is one of the best CMS around with it's robust community base and following. Over the time Drupal has matured enough to stand as a leader in the Open Source CMS. However, after a careful study of Drupal as a system (sorry I am a information system analyst by trade). I personally think Drupal has failed in some areas when it comes to managing the project in itself.

I know you will jump up and say "what is he talking about?".

Has anyone done deep evaluation of OG vs combination of modules for building communities ?

With recent development of many nodereference-based modules, I wonder if it's going to be better long-term solution to use custom nodes with nodereferences and build on that.
OG I think suffers in a way that it duplicates some features of the CCK. Example: If audience was CCK Nodereference field, I could just use any nodereference widget, that is supported, has long history of bugfixing and more stable etc. Now because audience is not CCK field I can't do that out of the box.

User Relationships Module and Privacy Settings?

hi,

I'm building a drupal page with some community functions like users can have their own profile (content_profile module) and they can upload images to galleries they create on their own.

I'm using the User Relationships Module to let users become "friends". This module has some access control functions to set permissions to who can view, edit and/or delete content that belongs to a user.

Should Drupal have a fully pre-packaged usable out of box product for social networking website to “compete” with BuddyPress?

We are now witnessing on the one hand the creation of more complex sites using WordPress with integration with social web and BuddyPress (a fully functional community website installation profile), and on the other hand a much more user friendly version 7 of Drupal and lots of pre-packaged products as OpenAtrium and OpenPublish.

And by this post I’m asking the Drupal community what can be our response to BudyPress ?
Sould we build a networking website distribution ?

For this session or panel discution I would like to use the result of several "focus groups" :

Tabed content drawn from user registration

Hi,

I'm new to Drupal and I've been trying to set up a site to run as a basic social networking site that for the moment allows users to set up a profile which allows them to display the following information;

  • Basic personal details (name, dob, location, bio etc.)
  • Embed video from YouTube etc
  • Upload images of themselves that can be possibly grouped in albums

I would like to set it up so that each users profile will look like the 'Movie Details' section (half way down the page) on the following site - http://www.ilovebolly.com/movie/pyar-impossible-2009

UserRelationship or Friendlist?

Just wondering what the latest thoughts are on whether to use the User Relationship module or the FriendList module.

I found this page: http://groups.drupal.org/node/14625

but that made me feel a little like 1) User Relationship is older 2) User Relationship is better 3) Some things may not have been evaluated such as "current community support", supported hooks, etc.

Any thoughts?

User Relationships has no way to show nodes written by currently logged in users friends?

Hey guys,

I'm developing a site where users can post links and follow eachother. I want to create a view that shows the latest links from users the currently logged in user is following.

I looked at the different friending modules, UR, friendlist, Flag friend for D6, and UR appeared to be the most supported and fully-featured.

I installed it, created a one-way relationship called "follow" and began following people to get some relationships in the DB. Then I integrated it into my theme.

Looking for an alternative

Hello All,
I was following the Complete Drupal 6 Ultimate Community Site Guide, but sadly got caught up at the part about using Panels to make custom user profiles, as it was outdated and the configurations/directions were off. I do see that Panels has a pre-installed "user profile" Panel, but I am not sure which of the options I choose when adding the first variant. Could anyone instruct me on which variant needs to be added at first....

Selection rules
Contexts

Are either of those needed? Perhaps someone has had a similar issue and used this pre-made panel instead?

Group Avatar for Organic Groups

I'm in the process of building a groups-based community site, and I'm wondering what the best way would be to allow each group (in Organic Groups) upload a group avatar that would show up on each groups home page.

The attach file option is fine, and the image shows up on the ghp, but it's not showing up in the right place. I have used views and such to theme and control the layout for the rest of the page, but I haven't managed to find the way to edit the Group Home Page header itself.

Is there a module out there that handles this specifically?

Linking users with common interests

Hey all!

I'd like to have the following feature on my site. Does anyone have an idea how to archive this?

When the user writes down his interests in his profile, i'd like the words to be presented as links (like tags).
After clicking on the link you would get a list of other users with the same interest.
I was reading through older posts but it seems like nobody ever came up with a solution for that.

Please, i would be happy about any suggestions!

Regards,
honorfield

Node Access Control

G'day Folks

I've made a good start in prototyping my social network site thanks in no small part to what I've read here. Now for the the bit, a biggie for me, that I haven't figured out...

My site will be a member only site & I'd like to split page access as follows. Anonymous Users should only be able to see (in Drupal path terms)...

  • <front>
  • login
  • user/login
  • user/register
  • about
  • invite/*

& Authenticated Users not able to see any of those (if only because there's no point).

How to: restrict Group post/Menu specific to OG Type

I have multiple Group Nodes (OG) of different types. I want to have each of the groups to have its own standard post assigned and its own Menu.

For example:

I have OG of Groups Type say Group A, Group B. I have other nodes (standard post) like Node 1, Node 2, Node 3, Node 4.

I want to have Node 1, Node 2 as Group post only in Group A and Node 3 and Node 4 as Group post only in Group B.

Also each group type will have their own home pages with its own set of Menu.

How to do this.

user_relationships access for photo gallery

using user_relationships.module, a user can set their gallery content-type so that only related users can access to it. but a gallery of content-type like node_gallery and views_gallery are only referenced to their image content-type. (or am i wrong?)

so, this means that even when the author set their gallery to 'only related users', anyone else can still view all the images in the gallery if they know the URL.

is there any good ways to go around about doing this? an 'only related users' gallery should only be viewable to 'only related users'.

How to do this - Organic Groups connecting to each other

I am trying to create groups of common interest for my site using OG and want members communicating within a group (which OG alredy does) and also one group communicating (or sharing data) with other group. More like Connections concept in linked in. There it is between users but here I would like to have one OG getting linked with another. One group sending a request to another to include it in its network and the othe group acepting it. Once connected they can share data or schedule events (like meeting) with each other. Any events shared can be moderated by both the groups.
