Drupal and Social Networking Sites functions capability SURVEY

I am a master student from London South Bank University in the United Kingdom. I am doing a research on one specific aspect of Drupal.

In essence my study is about assessing ways in which Drupal can be used to provide various kind of social networking functions since it wasn't primarily designed for that purpose.

Please tell us how you think this great content managemnt system ( CMS) can also provide social networking capabilities (features).

In order to help us answer the above question it would be extremely helpful to have the views of Drupal users like yourself.

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to Drupal - only a couple of months. I read 2 books and have tried to launch a social network type of site. My first immpression is that Drupal is very customizable, but somewhat of a learning curve. It is awesome. It does take a lot of trials and error type of work to get things work.

nabuur.com - yet another Drupal website for social good

http://www.nabuur.com/

Really nice site, too, built by Dutch people, I think.

Does anyone else know of any Drupal sites for social good? I think there must be quite a few now. We should make a page for them.

how do people get around my account/my profile problems

theres probably a reason for it, but having user/%user as the my account and user profile page is too confusing.

I no there arent neccasarily specific guidelines for social networks, but drupal made sites are the only sites ive seen where user profile and user account are the same page.

generally a user profile page is a page what everybody on the site can access to view public details about the user. While the users account, holds more personal details, such as the users login details, settings, and access controls.

Social networking accounts: unified approach to store in external account data in user content profiles?

Currently, drupal integration with networking sites happens through contrib modules that all store their settings in different ways. For example, both Facebook Connect and Twitter store combinations of drupal user IDs with external IDs (Facebook uid, and Twitter account name) in custom database tables, and both provide a custom interface to edit social network account information in a user profile. Consequently, views integration is custom and relies on the contrib module to implement it.

Seems very common things to do for any social Networking sites but why they r so hard to do in drupal?

Seems very common things (functions) to do for any social Networking sites but why they r so hard to do in drupal?

  1. I am trying to list all the countries from a drop down list, then list all the cities in another drop down list that based on the selected country.

after searching and asking on drupal forum, it seems the "hierarchical select" module will do the good job for that but it is only in dev stage and it won't work well with content profile module (which i am using atm) also it only works with "content taxonomy" for drupal 5 at this moment.

Private personal content, Private OG Content and buddies

I have run into a wall. I think I have all the modules to do what I need, but haven't a clue how to go about doing it. Let me explain what I am trying to do:

I have a network for a camp which has 4 divisions. Each division is supposed to be private from one another. I have private Organic Groups to accomplish this, which works great. Example content which can be posted in the OGs are photo galleries, single images, polls, videos, group forums, etc.

Your advice for better forums

I sure love Drupal -- except for the forums, which are pretty weak when compared to Simple Machines Forum or PHPbb. Even with the Advanced Forums module -- which improves things quite a bit -- the forums still come up short.

I'm working on integrating SMF with my Drupal 5 site now, and will look for Drupal 6 solutions in the future, so I'm wondering if anyone has good experience integrating one of these (or another) third-party boards.

Thanks!

New to Drupal and Seeking Clarification and or help on Drupal Theming

I've been trying to get my head around exactly how I can prepare my own web page design using an external style sheet and adapt it for or fit it to, say for example, a zen sub theme. I get the impression that the main concern is that one builds one's page to suit a 1. 2. 3 or even 4 column design with header and footer and then depending on one's basic theme one can add blocks for content within those column areas and designate which content goes in which block? Perhaps I just haven't messed around enough yet with the other themes.

need of drupal help.

Well obviously i'm posting this post for help here because the site i'm currently working on is a social networking site.
Now before you say it...no its not a myspace or facebook clone. I have a different idea just some aspects will be similar :)

My site will hopefully be more close to be assembled like myyearbook. Where everything is more interactive then just keeping in touch with friends. The whole "profiles, messages, and comments" idea will be sitting in the background.

so here is my issue,
