Social Networking Sites

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is the group for people who want to discuss Drupal's social networking tools. These tools include modules like Buddylist, Organic Groups, Invite, FOAF, Private message, and so forth. Sites that currently do successful social networking are:

The goal of this group is to foster communication between the developers of Drupal's social networking modules, discuss roadmaps, and collect community input.

Attach Nodes to Users for a "Gear Box"

I am brand new to drupal, and am trying to use it to build a social networking site (of course, that is why I am posting here). Although new, I have tried to research this question/idea but have not found a whole lot. Good chance I have blatantly overlooked some resource, and if that is the case, I apologize (but please point me to the resource). Here is what I would like to do:

Organic Groups confusion

Hello,

I'm trying to build a social network with private groups. Only an administrator (me) can make the groups and invite members. Users of one group cannot see or be a part of the other groups.

I am using Drupal 6 and organic groups. I created 2 groups, and when I click "Groups" in the navigation, it does not show any groups. When I click "My Groups", it shows only one of the groups!

New Social Networking book out now for Drupal 6

I'm currently using a recently published book entitled, 'Drupal 6 - Social Networking' as a guide for building a social network site. The following are excerpts from the book from the publishers, Packt Publishing. See: www.packtpub.com. I should say that the publishers, Packt Publishing, part sponsored the recent DrupalNGo Camp and sprint in Galway and asked if I would post some excerpts from their book.

Drupal 6 Social Networking: Communicating with Users

Our users can communicate with one another, which is great, but quite often as an administrator the need may arise for us to communicate with a user or users on our site. It may be to remind them about the web site or to inform active users about new changes to the site, which they may not have been made aware of.

This article is extracted from the "Drupal 6 Social Networking" book. In this article, you will learn:

  • About mailing lists, and how to use them with our Drupal social network
  • How to use an offline approach for contacting our users
  • How to use blocks of content to get a message across to your users

Activity2 User Interface

In order to understand the thinking behind this, you must remember that Activity2 is now based upon a configurable action which can be applied to triggers which are supplied through other modules. This gives us the ability to reuse a lot of the same core tables (actions and trigger_assignments) but the current Trigger and Actions UI's are quite confusing and encompass more than just Activity2 specific actions. There are also some limitations within the current Actions UI which create large complications when it comes to configuring an Activity2 Action.

Overambitious Social Network? Need some guidance, please

I am trying to build a social network for a kids' summer camp. They want campers and counselors to remain in touch throughout the year in this private social network. The site will feature videos, photos, and audio, calendar for events, news feed, etc. The interesting twist to all this, is the camp has 4 distinct sections, and users/campers/counselors from one section cannot access content or other users from other sections. There will, of course be moderators which can access 1, 2 or all 4 sections.

The ultimate Notification System

Notifying users of new content, events, actions is something that is common to enterprise level applications, social network or simply a blog. Notification can happen in many forms and via many mediums, some of the prominent ones being e-mail, instant messaging, SMS or live feed. Solutions uptill now have been separate and distant to each other, even though the problem is essentially the same, that is some message needs to be relayed to one of your user. The medium and carrier would differ and so would be the urgency and priority of delivery.

Help me write Views 2 Integration - Facebook-style Statuses

Hello everyone. I am the author of the Facebook-style Statuses module, and I have recently completed writing the reorganized 2.x branch (now in CVS/dev). The API should be clearer now and there are a few cool new features. In the next week or so I'm going to add/update two of the three remaining features: Advanced Forum integration and AHAH-driven status submission.

However, the one thing that I don't have any idea how to do is Views 2 integration. I've gone through the documentation and tried working through it before without success. So I would really appreciate it if someone who was knowledgeable in this area could guide me along with my foray into Views--whether that means reviewing integration that I write that doesn't work or actually writing the integration for the module yourself. I consider this an essential feature of the 2.x branch since it means not just integration with Views but also with FriendList and Flag Friend, so I will do it completely by myself at some point if no one steps up to help, but it would save me untold time and pain if someone could offer a little guidance in this area. And of course you'd have my perpetual gratitude.
