This is the group for people who want to discuss Drupal's social networking tools. These tools include modules like Buddylist, Organic Groups, Invite, FOAF, Private message, and so forth. Sites that currently do successful social networking are:

The goal of this group is to foster communication between the developers of Drupal's social networking modules, discuss roadmaps, and collect community input.

Creating a 'Quick Join' button for Organic Groups

I've got a community blogging site that uses Organic Groups to organise users and lets them subscribe to and post blog entries into groups they're a member of. I want to make it easier for casual visitors and existing members to quickly join up to a group.

The first thing I want to do is be able to place a "Join this group" link inline with the content so that it's more visible to people.

Suggestions for activity stream

I am experimenting with building a small social network for a community. I am using the standard contrib modules used for social networks such user relationships, flags, content profile, facebook style statuses, image cache, image cache profiles, blogs, images, emfield(videos), views, cck, context, invite, messaging, notifications, organic groups, panels, rules, voting. I am confused as how to create a news feed(facebook), a activity stream for each user. There are a few modules such as heartbeat, activity stream but I haven't used any of them before.

BrainStorming about how Drupal is able to "compete" with community product usable out of the box

Event type:
User group meeting

Community products usable out of the box : How is Drupal able to "compete"?
BrainStorming session Monday 3:00 to 4:00 pm Copenhagen time, Register at http://groups.drupal.org/node/88459)

Drupal has now at least two community products usable out of the box. http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
(Edit 20100822) http://drupal.org/project/voicebox targeting targets community media
+ facebook like feature http://sndemo.dev3.webenabled.net/node/1

There is a need to see how those projects compare and are able to "compete" with non-Drupal products.

Newbie question : how to create a user-centric website ?

Hi drupal community !

I'm searching some advices.

I'm starting with Drupal, and I try to do a website where :
- admin create users logins and passwords (that's works pretty well natively with drupal)
- at user creation, a page is automaticly created (something like /user/mypage ).
- at user login, redirect to /user/mypage
- /user/mypage is a page for each user (not visible to other users)
- admin only can edit /user/mypage (integrate some stuff, like a poll, privmsg module, etc...)

Where in Drupal is the best place to start today to build today?

To build a feature rich and scalable social networking site in Drupal today, which Drupal is the best place to start?

The choices I am aware of are D6, D7, drupal commons, Open Atrium, Managing News, and Open Publish. Are there more?

Where do you start to build a site that has most or all of the functionality in the bundled projects and further site specific customization?

This question may be of interest to many looking to build something big and new in Drupal now. I have a subquestion that is more specific to the core structure for my project.

Social Networking (Facebook/Linked-In) Style Searches?

Basically, I was wondering if it is possible to construct a search module similar to the way LinkedIn, Facebook, and a lot of other social networking sites generate their searches, by being able to choose what kind of content they want to search, (ie users + different node types), and providing an autocomplete field that matches what you are typing against the database. I've seen a couple of drupal sites that have similar behavior, but I'm not sure how they accomplish it. I've attached a photo to give you a better idea of what I'm looking for. Any pointers?

Proposal: Merge Community and Social Networking Sites groups

The "Community" group keeps getting posts that are Drupal community related but really nothing to do with building community sites. So I started out thinking a name change was in order. But there's also the fact that we have a group for Social Networking Sites. While these groups aren't identical, there is quite a bit of overlap. So I was thinking they could be merged into a new group. Some possible names: "Building community sites" or just "Building communities".

Is there a product competition analysis of the main socialnetworking solutions ?

Is there a feature list and competition analysis Drupal or non Drupal intranet usable out of box ?
The main supects (for me) would be :

Build on top of Drupal http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
In OpenSource http://buddypress.org/
In MS http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/
In Saas http://www.jivesoftware.com/ for business and http://ning.com for general public

If not already the case we can try to do that together...

We have quite some material in previous discutions

Drupal Commons, a new open source social software

I've seen on Twitter that a new Drupal distribution, Drupal Commons, has just been released by Dries' company Acquia. It seems to integrate Organic Groups (like groups.drupal.org) and other modules. I've just played a little with the demo but, at first sight, it seems really interesting. Has anyone installed it for testing? In this case, what are the pros and cons?

How to use tokens in menus?

hi,

how can I use tokens like "%user" when creating menu elements at "/admin/build/menu-customize/navigation/add"?

What I try to do is this:

  • At "admin/build/menu/add" I created a new menu called "Top Navigation" (top-navigation).
  • This menu should contain links to user profile pages, like:
    -- Profile Homepage -> user/[USERNAME]
    -- Edit your profile -> user/[UID]/edit
    -- List your friends -> user/[UID]/friends
    -- List your content -> user/[UID]/content
    -- etc.

dofollow creation

I'm using acquia slate theme for my website. I also have drupal core and fusion as well. for the blog portion of my site, i'm trying to make it dofollow for the comments portion of it. Whenever i submit a blog, i make sure i DO NOT check 'nofollow' so the google spiders will crawl it. when i went to test the comments portion of it, i noticed that there is no place to submit a url to share some backlink love. Any suggestions? I do have a captcha as to eliminate spam, and i monitor the site closely.

Problems with custom preprocessing function and template file from the views module

hi,

I know the title doesn't say clearly what this discussion is all about but it's not easy to explain what I'm trying now for more than 5 hours (!!!) without any useful result :-(

Ok, let me explain:

I'm building a community-page. On each user-profile people will see - among other things - a view called "list_groups" (created with the views module) which lists all groups a user has joined. It's a normal HTML list which contains the node titles as links.

How to send a wink to members?

For a dating site I'm looking for a solution to send a wink to members. Like with private messaging the receivers needs to get a notification for receiving a wink. The sender and receivers need to have an overview of send and received winks. Also the receiver needs to be able to send a wink back to the sender.

Any tips for available modules or a solution to implement this feature would be nice.

"Content Complete" for custom Member Profile Modules/Forms... "Module Completeness"?

In my usage of Drupal I have come to really like the Content Complete (http://drupal.org/project/content_complete) module that looks at the fields, including CCK of a node, and displays in a block what still needs to be completed.

I am now working with a client who has their member profile in a custom module, as it does have a lot of stuff going on from being able to ad contact to one's profile, etc. etc. in which the Profile module or Content Profile module are not sufficient (and even if they were, it would be a bunch of work to get their site working under those, and no time for that now).

The client wants users to be able to see how many fields of their profile, of our custom member_profile module, need to be filled out, etc.

So...........

I've been trying to figure out how to turn Content Complete into a program that instead of looking at a node's CCK, it looks at a module's hook_scheme to get the fields it populates for a user (must have a uid column), then let admin select which ones are needed for completeness, and then show completeness meter in blocks.
