New Mobile Site for GatorTailgating.com!

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of rolling out my first Drupal mobile site! After listening to Drupal founder Dries Buytaert talk about the mobile web taking over, I lit a fire under myself to get this done.

Dries' Presentation Slide

Luckily, I discovered it’s easy as pie in Drupal:

The modules that I had to install to get it functioning well are collapsiblock, menu block, and mobile tools.

  • Collapsiblock is just what it sounds like. It enables javascript collapsible blocks. You set defaults on if the block is collapsed by default, always collapsed, or collapsible.
  • Menu Block enables you to take a certain subsection of your Drupal menu system, and display it in a block.
  • Finally, Mobile Tools does the grunt work, and detects mobile devices. If it finds a mobile device user-agent, it redirects them to m.gatortailgating.com, and also switches the theme to your mobile them.

The final amount of work was just straight up D6 theming. I created a copy of the custom GatorTailgating.com theme, and modified the page.tpl.php and associated CSS files.

The final time it took to put this together was something around 6 hours… which to me is pretty amazing. It really speaks to Drupal’s power. Check it out on your IPhone, Droid or (hopefully not..) Blackberry!

PS. For all you Gator Drupaler's out there. We're having a huge Orange & Blue Game tailgate. Stop by and I'll throw you some free food & beer!

difference between a webpage on a mobile device and an app

I'm just not seeing why the mobile devices use apps and not webpage integration to create their funcationality.

I've been doing Drupal for a year or so, and I'm now also checking out mobile device app programming. To access the functionality -- not just the display -- on a mobile device you need to program in Java or C++. I'm of course resistant to learning and using Java or C++ because browser technologies are so much easier and more elegant for graphic display, especially with Drupal.

Drupal Mobile Development Guide for Beginners

To my Drupal Brothers and Sisters,

I'm considering writing a Drupal Mobile Development guide for Beginners, but I'm a little stuck. My problem is that I've been developing sites for four years now and I've lost touch with what it's like to be a beginner. I'm afraid that the content of my book will be unfocused. Rather than make this mistake, I thought I'd post to the mobile group to get some honest feedback about the topics that I should be covering. I've always believed that the cornerstone of anything great is a great plan. Please help me to include/exclude the right topics, so that my guide can reach and help seed the widest possible beginning Drupal development audience.

Path prefix 'm' for mobile version of a drupal site.

For a project of mine, I'm looking for a solution to the following problem. I want to show for a path prefix, a mobile version of my site. So if someone calls http://www.mysite.de/m/ he will see the mobile portal. On http://www.mysite.de/ he will see the normal site. Unfortunately I have not found any possibility to create own path prefixes.

Do you have any ideas?

Supporting Touchscreens/Mobile Devices for Location and Mapping Projects

I'm interested in hearing how people are using Drupal to support mobile devices/touchscreens for location and mapping projects. I see two ways one would approach this:

1) Build an app that runs natively on the platform that interfaces with Drupal through a REST interface (Sounds like Heyrocker (Services module) is pushing for the Butler project http://buytaert.net/drupal-in-a-tablet-world)

2) Build support for mobile devices/touchscreen devices into the javascript libraries we are using to display maps to browsers.

3) Other suggestions? :)
