Case study: running a small college site with drupal

Hi folks,

I'm following up on promises I made during the Birds of a Feather sessions at Drupalcon Boston to post a case study of how we're using Drupal at Amherst College. We've developed a module to facilitate hierarchical content creation and permission control that's also of potential interest to folks outside of the academic community.

Preamble aside - about 3 years ago the college decided to fundamentally change the way it was approaching the web, and a little over 2 years ago we started building on top of Drupal. The project had some broad goals:

Drupal in public education ...

Greetings!

By day I'm the Webmaster at a mid to large size public school system here in the USA (Frederick County Public Schools, MD). I'm curious to know how many of you out there in Drupal-land are implementing Drupal sites in the public education sector. Some specific questions:

1) Do you support it (server-wise) in house or do you host outside/off campus?

2) Do you host on VPS/dedicated or shared? Linux or Windows?

3) Do you run multi-site configurations?

4) How long have you been running Drupal sites?

New Module: Writing Assignment

Hi everyone. I've been working for several months now on a new social learning module for Drupal called “Writing Assignment.” This module will make it simple for a teacher to assign students to write on a topic and then for the writing to be read, commented on, and rated by other students. I think the code is to a point where I can show it to other people and not feel too embarrassed :>

Communication with Parents

What would be a recommended approach for giving parents a view of their kid(s) work? Ideally, when a parent logs in, they would see the names of their kids throughout the school system. When they select one of their kids, they would see what assignments they have due, their current grades in their class(es), attendance record and any notes from the teacher that relate to the class or specifically to the child (i.e. "Billy is doing great on his math homework.")

Gradebook module

I downloaded and installed the Gradebook module that is posted as a project over at Drupal, and realized I had difficulty understanding how it worked, although I did manage to figure it out.

So over the past few days I've put together a node submission form for a Gradebook node which includes the following features:

  1. You can enter in student names in one column and their scores in another column
  2. You can specify the default number of students per page.
  3. You can create new columns for your gradebook without submitting all of your information.

Drupal-Moodle Integration: Still used, desired?

What are the current thoughts on Drupal-Moodle integration? Some folks were integrating Moodle into Drupal at least up to the Drupal 5 Beta. I'd greatly appreciate the thoughts of the Ed group on this. And more broadly, how the DrupalEd distribution will/should fit in with the OpenAcademic Moodle, Elgg, MediaWiki and Drupal integration.
