Distributions

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

A group for talking about Drupal distributions.

At DrupalCon Europe 2020, a BoF (Drupal Distributions - Learning from each other - read about the outcomes here) came up with the idea of distribution maintainers meeting and exchanging ideas on a regular basis to learn from each other. In January 2021, the first meeting took place, we collected topics that affect us all and planned the first discussion rounds (read the meeting minutes here).

We want to meet once a month, present our projects to each other, ask questions, discuss possible solutions and thus grow by working together. For planning and sharing purposes, we have adopted this group.

Originally, this group was created as an informal response to Dries' blog entry about potential pitfalls in creating Drupal distribution installation profiles. We still think this is an important topic (of many!) and plan to discuss such questions as well.

The intent of this group is to provide a forum for distribution maintainers to discuss on a very broad scope in the interest of promoting collaboration, cooperation and communication among them. This group is a good place to: announce new projects and the goals behind them, identify common goals and best practices for distributions, and explore options for collaboration and consolidation where possible.

Multiple profiles in an Installation Profile project?

To contribute several related Install Profiles, should they be put in a project with one folder and several profiles, a project with several folders and a profile in each, or separate projects altogether? Thanks!

DrupalEd install profiles

The DrupalEd project is now live on Drupal.org -- we are now ready to use the issue queue to centralize discussion on the different install profiles. In starting to discuss the profiles, I suggest we use the following format, as we will need to answer these questions as we build the various profiles.

2 vs. 3 install profiles for D6? Minimum Framework, (Personal Site?), Maximal Framework

Fresh from a discussion about install profiles for the upcoming D6 release with Boris Mann, he suggested that I post this here... so, here it is.

Boris was wondering, "What kind of site should the default install profile for D6 be geared toward?"

Assumptions (correct me if I'm wrong):

1) Drupal aims to be a framework, as opposed to being a CMS for particular kinds of sites.

2) Given the current state of tools, D6 will not be shipped with the ability to pull in contrib modules based on user selections.

Minimum technical requirements to still be considered Drupal

There have been discussions about what are the minimum requirements for Drupal to still be considered Drupal. Some have argued that it must include the entire core distribution.

I have argued that distribution profile builders require more freedom to re-mix Drupal.

Requirements
1) All include files
2) Must be compatible with all core Drupal APIs.
3) All required modules
4) All core theme engines
5) Drupal core licenses must be included
6) A working theme

Not-required
-All modules that are not required such as page, story, watchdog in Drupal 6.

Openmusic:a barter Social Network for Musicians, Bands and Fans

Greetings fellow Drupallers!
I began working on OpenMusic, a social network that aims at letting fans help music artists. By giving appropriate roles to its fans - thus getting them involved - an artist can build a network of valuable friends where each can provide a service to help the artist.

Creation of an Installation Profile for Drupal Social Networking

I was wondering if there is a Install Profile for Social Networking Sites.

I checked it up at the Distribution profiles group and searched for "Social Networking" and found nothing. Are there any efforts in building a install profile for social networking sites? I checked up at Social Networking Sites and found nothing about installation profiles.

Has there been already an effort.

And if not a installation profile, then can we formulate a site recipe?

Partial Install Profiles

I know I should do more reading and trying before asking, but are partial install profiles possible? Can (parts of) install profiles be used after a site is already up and running? Should this use of canned configuration be tried?

To take an easier-seeming and probably useful case, how difficult would it be to adapt the profile mechanism and a profile itself in order to make adding wiki functionality to a site a matter of a few steps.

modules for every profile

In some recenty discussion on the development list about update_status ( http://drupal.org/project/update_status ) and how it should be included in distribution profiles so that admins know what to update.

If we look at this page about helper scripts variable_sets to run during install ( http://groups.drupal.org/node/2828 ) then we can see that pathauto and logintoboggan are two modules that at least some folks feel might be commonly included in distros.

So - what are the modules that you feel are "must haves" for a distro? Are there any that are universal like this?

Proposal: drupal.org testsite install profile

this is an idea i've been thinking about. posting it here so other folks can add to it, provide feedback, etc.

Summary

we could really use an install profile that setup a test site similarly to how drupal.org is configured (especially the project* modules and CVS integration). obviously, it wouldn't have the bluebeach theme, but otherwise, it would look fairly similar to d.o in terms of structure, content, permissions, etc.

this would greatly help people who wanted to reproduce bugs and test patches for the project* family of modules, which is something we desperately need more of.

SoC 2007 proposal - Drupal Automated Staging Kit

Hello all,
Sorry for cross-posting; but I think people working on different aspects of Drupal may have interest in this idea.

I've submitted a SoC 2007 Drupal proposal on automating the whole process of creating a complete Drupal site with a LAMP stack in a self-contained virtual machine image. A formatted PDF version is here:
http://www.abeharry.info/SoC2007_DrupalAST_FullProposal.pdf
Here is the abstract:

The Drupal automated staging toolkit is a proposed set of code libraries, file schemas and parsers, and code generators, for

Wiki installation profile

Yesterday I published the first version of my wiki installation profile. The installation offers the following features at the moment:

  • Editing for anonymous users
  • Moderator role which can revert / delete pages
  • Revisions for pages
  • Mediawiki input format + Image assist
  • Categorization via free tagging vocabulary
  • Views: All pages / All categories / All Images
  • Recent changes

I will talk more about this and the future of Drupal wikis in general at my talk at OSCMS summit next week.

See you there.

Installation Profiles at OSCMS Summit

I just learned my panel proposal for the Open Source CMS Summit next week was accepted. I'm jumping head first into this stuff and will present my experience putting together a specific distribution. I'm stoked to meet some of you in Sunnyvale. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any points you'd like to see covered or have anything at all to contribute. (scott -AT- pando -DOT- com).

First pass at a site for DrupalEd

Check it out here: http://drupaled.alphabetademo.org

The site can function as a blogging platform, a podcasting platform, a wiki, an informal learning space, a course management space, and/or as a replacement for an organizational intranet. Within the site, users can create working groups or communities of practice. The site also supports social bookmarking. The homepage of the site gives a more complete overview of the functionality.

crud.inc

Hi all -- so, great to see a handful of install profiles start showing up.

One thing I noticed today with the new "Drupal for Churches" (see the full list of install profiles here: http://cvs.drupal.org/viewcvs/drupal/contributions/profiles/) is that Mike P included the helper file "crud.inc".

This is a file that we put together that bundles simple functions for working with data structures in Drupal and configuring them "out of the box" for install profiles (fyi -- CRUD == Create / Read / Update / Delete).

Installation profile projects now hosted on drupal.org

hello world,

drupal.org infrastructure can now be used to host installation profiles:

1) there's a "/contributions/profiles" directory in the contrib repo.

http://cvs.drupal.org/viewcvs/drupal/contributions/profiles/README.txt?v...

2) there's a new Project type, called "Installation profiles":

two critical points i wrote in the README.txt:

Helper scripts and settings

Pathauto settings

Pathauto enabled in installation profile doesn't work unless some variables are set.

Note that I've implemented these in pathauto_install as part of this issue: http://drupal.org/node/113496 So if you use the 5.x--2 version of pathauto then these are no longer necessary (and the version one is outdated). You could still use them as the basis to set your own configuration. --greggles
