A group for talking about Drupal distributions.
At DrupalCon Europe 2020, a BoF (Drupal Distributions - Learning from each other - read about the outcomes here) came up with the idea of distribution maintainers meeting and exchanging ideas on a regular basis to learn from each other. In January 2021, the first meeting took place, we collected topics that affect us all and planned the first discussion rounds (read the meeting minutes here).
We want to meet once a month, present our projects to each other, ask questions, discuss possible solutions and thus grow by working together. For planning and sharing purposes, we have adopted this group.
Originally, this group was created as an informal response to Dries' blog entry about potential pitfalls in creating Drupal distribution installation profiles. We still think this is an important topic (of many!) and plan to discuss such questions as well.
The intent of this group is to provide a forum for distribution maintainers to discuss on a very broad scope in the interest of promoting collaboration, cooperation and communication among them. This group is a good place to: announce new projects and the goals behind them, identify common goals and best practices for distributions, and explore options for collaboration and consolidation where possible.
About i18n-ready installation profiles
Hello all,
I'm currently trying to build an i18n-ready installation profiles. One of them is for a simple Ubercart multilingual store. Not being a Drupal ninja or guru means I'm scavenging for all the help I can get. So as you can imagine, I'm looking for ways (examples are best) to 'Internationalize' profiles & distros. My goal is have a good-enough-to-go profile by the end of March.
I've searched through http://drupal.org/project/installation%20profiles but didn't find much. Any help, pointers or guidance would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

Greetings distribution maintainers.
In the past, there were a bunch of restrictions for what kinds of things you could put in your drupal-org.make file if you wanted your distribution packaged by drupal.org for download. Thanks to all the work I've been doing as part of http://drupal.org/community-initiatives/drupalorg/distribution-packaging nearly all of those restrictions are now gone.

Greetings distribution maintainers who want to package your distros on drupal.org...
I've been hard at work lifting nearly all the restrictions on drupal.org that might have prevented you from hosting your distributions there in the past. See http://drupal.org/community-initiatives/drupalorg/distribution-packaging for details.

There is a new handbook page, Usage statistics for distributions, fixing an issue on solutions to this problem.
That is, distributions have usage statistics available on drupal.org, and the docs now explain how, thanks to dww.

We had a very productive Distro Summit at SANDcamp this week https://www.sandcamp.org/drupal-distribution-summit There was an excellent dialog on both technical and business topics. There was distro maintainer representation from Acquia, Phase2, LevelTen, Four Kitchens, ChapterThree, ImageX, Lullabot and many others. There were 46 attendees who engaged in a full day discussion on various topics. We will be holding another Distro Summit later this year. I am writing a summary and resource document for distro maintainers and the community. It should be available within two weeks.

What considerations need to be addressed to ensure the Configuration Management Initiative is informed by and reflects the needs of Drupal distributions?
The Configuration Management Initiative tackles problems that are distinct from but overlap with what's done in Drupal 7 with the Features module, the tool of choice for producing distributions. Features allows capturing bundles of configuration and deploying them in a form that can be reproduced on multiple sites.

I wanted to get a more detailed agenda to everyone for the Distro Summit we are holding in San Diego on January 25th. It will proceed SANDcamp and be held at the Omni Hotel. We will have lunch and evening cocktails provided. I spent some time with Angie this week and we feel there is great value in addressing both the business model/needs of the distro community and also the technical requirements/optimization.

Hey, folks! I'm currently working on an issue over at http://drupal.org/node/1314124 to create a separation between distributions (products) and installation profiles (quickstart), create a list distributions, and add some more prominent language to the home page and download pages about distributions to promote them as one of Drupal's key strengths.

Wanted to let anyone interested know that we just launched the Open Enterprise distribution for Drupal 7 into beta. It has come a long way since the distro (iSite Essentials) we launched back in 2008. I would love to get any thoughts or input.
We reworked the distro for D7 to include a streamlined base installation of essential modules and site building that are popular in most sites. We leverage Apps to install more advanced optional features like blogs, job board, rotating banner, etc.

botafoc.cat is the beginning of a project to be focused on making a distribution of drupal simple, base and complete.
This distribution was created with the idea of not repeating the typical configurations that are each installed drupal (activation and configuration of modules). This includes the typical modules are installed at all sites with drupal ( views, pathauto, etc...). This allows us to save some time.

Last updated by silverwing on Sat, 2011-12-17 16:45
Over the past months we've had many discussions here in the d4d group, at various Drupal camps, IRC and in the issue queues. I have kept notes and references to most of these discussions and based on those prepared a proposed design brief for the design initiative. It would be good if someone can enable comments on this wiki page, so we can discuss this and make changes etc to the brief. This is my initial idea - what is missing is a link to a demo site (I am setting that up today, I have a pretty good boilerplate site thats a good starting point).

While working on a project for the Palmetto Technology Hub, a couple folks from #CHSDUG and I found there are no great open source helpdesk systems. I've tried Storm and Casetracker, and they're too basic. Support Ticketing System logs notes as comments, so we lose the internal/external split and easy access control. osTicket is what we currently use at the Tech Hub and it's pretty mediocre. Most other open source options haven't been updated in 2 years or longer. All the proprietary options that are halfway decent are expensive.
Read moreProposal: Add "Distributions" as a separate project type than "Install profiles"
I wrote up a proposal at http://drupal.org/node/1205640 to make distributions (polished Drupal products) a separate concept than installation profiles (Drupal + some starter code) on the Drupal.org site.
A big problem with distributions taking off is their utter lack of visibility, so this might be one approach.
Please chime in on that issue if you have thoughts! :) (Comments turned off here to keep discussion in one place).
