Design 4 Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Design for Drupal is about bringing the community of designers together to be a part of the Drupal community. It’s about enabling designers and themers to do great stuff, coordinate efforts, come up with crazy ideas, and build a movement to make Drupal beautiful.

Why create new themes?

I'm a web-designer from norway and have been working with drupal for about 3 years now. Creating drupal themes is a big challenge, especially menus, tabs, blocks, nodelayouts and comments. Css takes a lot of time and can sometimes be a $"#$%&! Out of the box; Why create new themes? Why not do as the maintainers/creators of the quicktabs module? Within that module there are 11 different layouts, wow!. I would love to see a module that had several layouts/designs for comments or tabs. And if you had different menu styles and node layouts, one could pretty much create a more unique theme?

AdaptiveThemes reaching out to the designer crowd

This week I re-launched AdaptiveThemes as the first site to crowd source commercial Drupal themes. Sounds like a radical idea and it probably is. I seen crowdsourcing work for a number of other high profile design projects and I believe these crowd sourced themes can be a huge win for Drupal users and the Drupal designer and themer communities.

The concept is strait forward:

  1. Designers upload designs
  2. Themers convert the designs into beautiful Drupal themes
  3. We sell them and split the profits 50/50, designer gets half, themer gets half

New Adobe.com article: Building Drupal Zen sub-themes with Dreamweaver CS4

The third article in my Drupal series for Adobe.com is out now. This article covers Drupal Zen Sub-Themes, including Dreamweaver tip(s) when working with Drupal themes.

"When asked why I would recommend the Zen theme versus a core theme such as Garland, I answer, Zen was built to be a seed for your tree—you plant the seed, water it, and watch it grow! Garland looks nice, but is not documented well and has custom page template code that should not appear elsewhere. In short, Garland is just not right as the basis for a theme; the Zen theme is."

Design/Theme Website

One of the things that came out of the Boston Drupalcamp was the need for a site with tools/highlights to meet the needs of designers/themers. Developers have tools like cvs.drupal.org, api.drupal.org, the automated testing framework, and more. Designer/themers have tool needs of their own.

This document is meant to be a rough function spec for such a site. The focus here is on the feature set and not what site(s) they end up on.

This is a 'living document'. Please feel free to edit/change/add to it.
