Eigo-Japan

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

There is currently a Japanese group, but most if not all communication is done in Japanese, which is great! This group offers more of an English based group as a world language to bridge the gap of communication and set it to one language. Looking to grow this group into constructive meetings, and community donation projects to help build Drupal in a positive light in Japan. (Eigo, Japanese for English).

New Ubercart/Drupal Marketplace site in Japan

Hey Guys/Girls,

So I have been away from the group. Alethia is really busy at the moment, one of the reasons is a new site we have been working on. Some others in the work as well, this one is great for Japan and Drupal I believe.

http://wixi.jp

The site offers domain reselling, offer negotiation, buy it now, and more features to come. It was a complex build, and it is the first release, so we do have issues to fix and more localisation to be done, but I wanted to share it with the group.

For an overview of the site and what it does:

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone in Eigo-Japan or Japan-Tokyo who is interested in news innovation—technology and journalism and the future of news?

Drupal open innovation platform

Hi, I'm rebooting a Drupal open innovation platform project: an installation profile for open innovation. The project was initiated by Nicholas Wang as Open Hippel. And is now being rebooted as HaveGet. I'll be building on what we learned with Open Hippel, but in Drupal 7. If anyone is interested in open innovation, Panels, Views, or Features, please comment here or contact me. Thank you.

Drupal in Japan : ディスカッション:Discussion

I'm interested in holding discussions about how and in what kind of direction an Open Source Drupal effort in Japan should be organized. Part of the reason why I formed the Tokyo Drupal User Group against opposition was because whatever I tried to suggest or get going as a Drupal newbie and voluteering organizer, I was being told to get back in place. English is my first language and I am experienced in venture capital and M&A businesses (as well as IT). So as far as starting something goes, that's what I specialize in. And I also speak and write fluent Japanese to an extent.

System Administration, Server/VPS Builds

Anyone here into server builds? I find tweaking servers to be really fun, but up until now, it has been just me, would be fun to find anyone else in Japan who likes this as well and help each other out.

So if anyone likes this type of thing, hit me up. Maybe we can meet up, do some testing. I do have a Drupal site that seems to be able to bring servers to its knees that I have been working on, going live soon. We can use this for benchmarks and build out something really nice that we could all use for our Drupal sites.

Drupal in Japan

I'm wondering how people in this group are using Drupal, more specifically I'm wondering what the market is like there now for freelance developers. I lived in Tokyo for 5 years so I know my way around and know the language a little. I have plenty of work in the US but would love to come back to Tokyo, even if only for a working vacation. Just curious how/if people are getting by doing the freelance thing in Japan.

All comments welcomed.

Thanks,
Bill

Totally new to Drupal

I currently have a site in Joomla! and, after taking a look at what Drupal offers, am now considering moving over. Thing is, I know Squat Zero about Drupal except what I'm trying to pick up over the nenmatsu-nenshi holidays. I have tons of questions about Drupal. I like what I see so far.
My needs are relatively simple, but I need to find out if Drupal is right for what we want to do.
I'm in Kansai for the holidays (near Himeji), but home base is Yokohama. Anyone available for a quick chat in Kansai through the holidays (until 3 Jan), or in Kanto otherwise?

Thanks,
- John

i18n Variables list and Resources

I want to start this wiki to build up a good list of i18n variables that you use when building a Multi-lingual Drupal site.

It's a wiki, so be Bold and please help out!

Resource links (please add as you find them):

'site_slogan',
'site_mission',
'site_footer',
// User email variables
// Primary and secondary links

Community Project Ideas For the Group?

Hi Everyone,

As I have mentioned in some other posts. I think it helps to have something to build to really get things going in a positive light for the group. It also gives meaning to any kind of meeting that we have.

I would like to see if we can get some ideas going about a group project that we can build that would do a couple of things:

  • Use Drupal (I know, this is a given)

Tokyo Metropolis Meetup

Let's get a general meetup going. Drinks, talk and some devel maybe. Just a first kind of meet and greet.

I am thinking a Weekday night, somewhere in Tokyo.

Let me know if anyone out there would be up for this and has a good idea of where to meet at. I might hit up a pub in Takadanobaba and see if we can do it there, power and all that.

At the same time, if there is anyone out there that is interested in VPS server build, LAMP style...Ubuntu then I would love to get a mini work group going on this where we can build something nice. Someone who has experience out there?

Drupal, monetary gain, penicillin

I have a different opinion on what Dokuro says

I think a lot of people in Japan try and rush the the monetary gain of Open Source and lose out on the joy of what it can do for others.

http://groups.drupal.org/node/106964

I think that the monetary gain is actually the key for Drupal to be popular in Japan.

Do you know this story?
Alexander Fleming found penicillin, but he didn't patent it in a hope manufacturers would save the patients in the First World War.
No manufacturer, however, produced penicillin because they were afraid of competition.
