Status: Removed from consideration at the 2 October 2008 review meeting
drupaleo's desired goal is twofold:
- to enlarge and foster the drupal community's overall talent by helping current and future drupalists to grow their individual talent
- to support team building (staffing) for drupal projects
drupaleo's desired outcome is to build and run a platform that integrates people, projects and knowledge for drupal.

In September, I will be on a plane from Budapest back to the US, so someone else will need to run the meeting or we will need to reschedule.

One observation I've had from lurking in the Knight Drupal Initiative meetings is something that's haunted me before. If only I was good at writing a solid grant proposal and subsequent review and revisions, some of my pie-in the sky ideas might actually turn into something valuable for the community (and provide a self-sustainable way for me to contribute).

This project will create and host a Facebook Application which enables individuals and groups to publish online "newspapers". In doing so, it will contribute code to Drupal modules allowing anyone to host a similar venture.
The online newspaper we envision allows timely publication of text, images and media; similar to already available blogging sites, but emulating a widely understood newspaper model. Specifically, our model will support:

NewsCloud Newsroom Module
[Edit: This proposal was formally rejected at the 11-Sept-2008 meeting. The applicant may reapply by filling out a new proposal that addresses the concerns outlined below. -- agentrickard]
The NewsCloud Newsroom module makes it easy for Drupal-based sites to integrate an interactive, social media newsroom. An early test release of the module was released in February 2008 (http://drupal.org/node/219425) and is part of the Drupal CVS tree. The Drupal Newsroom is a key component of NewsCloud's overall Newsroom Architecture (see attached PDF for background and specific scenarios the architecture enables).
The Newsroom module is currently in early beta. The basic functionality works although a few bugs remain. We would like to improve the robustness of the module and add new features. We would also like to solicit feedback from the Drupal community to build a list of suggested enhancements for future development.
The outcome of this project will result in more organizations with Drupal websites using our module to attract interest in and generate activity on their website while increasing the level of engagement and knowledge of current events with their members; this in turn will help them become more successful in their own mission. We will also conduct a survey of groups that used the module and provide a post-mortem of the impact of the module on their organization's missions. The post-mortem will also assess whether ongoing updates to the module are necessary and what features might be included.
Read moreReview consensus
So, we need some consensus on how to proceed. We have two proposals right now, just sort of waiting for action.
Do we need to have scheduled public reviews -- in IRC or otherwise -- that impose some deadlines?
Should the admins simply give each proposal a one month lifespan and mark it rejected after that time?
How can we get things moving through the pipeline, so that Knight can start reviewing?

At the bottom of each proposal, you will find a voting widget. You are encouraged to read and rate each proposal. The following guidelines will help us be consistent when reviewing proposals.
When you rate an application, we would prefer that you also leave a comment about your rating and your reasoning. This is especially true is cases where subject-matter experts are critiquing a proposal or in situations where conflicts of interest may arise.
Rating scale
The system uses a 5-point rating scale, with votes corresponding to:
- 5 == Awesome!!!

A little off-topic, but it seems to me there could be a nice fit with this initiative– code tools for journalists while learning more about being a journalist: Still seeking coders interested in journalism.
