Media Temple, is a webhosting and virtualization service provider and has one of the largest virtualization deployments in North America, with more than 85,000 customers and more than 600,000 domains on both coasts of the United States. Media Temple is a new venue sponsor for us but was one of our gold level sponsors at DrupalCamp LA 2010.

We want your feedback!

During the meetup, we'll be gathered in the #drupal-la IRC channel and all are welcome to join us. The event organizers will also be checking Twitter for feedback and questions that mention @ladrupal or use the #ladrupal hashtag.

Agenda

Theme for the Night: Groups and Communities on Drupal Sites.

Main Presentation: Organic Groups - presented by Nicole Bluto

Nicole Bluto, co-founder of Intrinsic Web Designs and LA Drupalchix co-organizer, will present Organic Groups (http://drupal.org/project/og). She will use her work on the soon-to-launch Golf Central Station website to show how OG really works in a real-life project!

Question and Answer period at the end, as well!

Users Helping Users

The meetup begins at 7:30pm but the doors open a little earlier at 7pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

Lightning talks

We have time as well for lightning talks, which are 5 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. It'd be great if you have a lightening talk that fits with the evening's theme!

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

Job announcements and open Q&A

Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom of the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.

Breakout Groups

Time-depending, at the end of the evening we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.

Wrap up and Drupal After Dark

Several of us may be going to a local restaurant or bar for a Drupal After Dark afterward. Leave a comment below if you have ideas of a possible bar or restaurant that is nearby.

Looking Ahead

For next month, if you have an idea for something you'd like to learn, post a comment below, or better yet suggest a presentation idea! ... and if you see a topic you'd like to present, post a comment or contact us! Depending on remaining time, we'll have lightning talks, job announcements, break-out groups, and networking. Oh, and of course raffle prizes!

Since the Downtown Meetup was packed to the brim, and as a precursor to the Drupal Performance meetup, I wanted to talk about a real-case where we had a very slow query (1.5 - 2 seconds to execute) which was slowing down the page load on a website I work on. This involved examining the query, having it explained, and figuring out how to speed it up (the speed up went to about .05 seconds) making the site much zippier. So the lightning talk is about both using an index on slow queries and how to diagnose an area of the site that may be behaving strangely.

That presentation went...a little too fast.

For a less speedy version that you can read through, I posted all of this (and in much greater detail along with a pdf) at http://btmash.com/article/2011-04-08/optimizing-your-site-query-adding-i.... Mind you, in this particular instance, the new version of the flag module (which, is oddly in beta) has the index in place (though the 1.x stable does not). But as mentioned at the meetup, its important to diagnose where you performance issues might be coming :)

thank you!

Ashok - thanks for a great presentation and for posting this! Valuable information for all of us.

Drush on the Grid

jstoller's picture

Given our venue, I'd like to request a lightning talk on how to get Drush working on Media Temple's Grid server (without all the open_basedir errors).

Anyone planning to be at the

Anyone planning to be at the meetup who has experience using the mt gs and drush? We'll ask at the meetup as well.

mt gs and drush

I'm using drush on a mt gs, but I won't be at the LA meeting unfortunately. It's been a while since I set it up, but I suppose I could write a little howto. :-)

Has anyone tried the instructions I found on mediatemple's wiki?

I suggest giving that a try.

I second that!

Drupal After Dark

Last month we went to the Ugo Bar in downtown Culver City for Drupal After Dark. What did you think? I thought it worked out well. Let me know your ideas. Should we do Ugo’s again or are there other ideas. Here is the info on Ugo’s.

What is Drupal After Dark?
After the monthly Drupal meetup it has been customary for many of us continue talking Drupal in a casual atmosphere while enjoying a beer and or some food at a local restaurant or bar.
All Welcome!

Great Meetup last night

pcher1bw's picture

It was a great meetup last night.

Nicole's presentation on GDO was excellent!

Ashok's lightning talk on optimizations was really exciting for me, too bad it went by so quickly. Debugging is an art, and Ashok is obviously an Artist. I'd be willing to sit through a full length presentation on the subject showing in more detail how to narrow down to one part of the system.

Media Temple's selection of food was great, and they really went all out to set up seating.

Thank you all for a great meetup! nbluto's Organic Groups presentation gave us all some great ideas. She mentioned a few useful modules:

Admin Menu - http://drupal.org/project/admin_menu
Organic Groups Panels - http://drupal.org/project/og_panels
Activity Stream - http://drupal.org/project/activitystream

Ashok's and Justin's lightening talks were also great. Ashok has posted a link to a fuller collection of information above, and Justin will post something in the near future.

As a community, we have an assignment: next meetup one of us will hopefully be ready to give a lightening talk on using Drush on the mt grid server. See the link roninsa posted above to get started.

Please post any other responses, ideas or important notes here :)

Blog post about Organic Groups

nbluto's picture

Hi All,
Thanks for listening to my presentation. I had fun presenting. OG is a very in depth topic. I think it's worth a Drupal Camp session. Anyway, I did a blog post on setting up Organic Groups. I didn't go into the Panels Part, but I did do a nice write up of setting up basic OG. http://nicolebluto.com/content/organic-groups-notes If you are dying to do OG panels, let me know. I will write up another post.
