Let's do a Drupal meetup on Wednesday, February 4! We didn't have a meetup last month (the LA Drupal group held their meeting during the same week we normally do) and it's time for another one.
When: 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 |
Where: Java Station on 4447 Hollister Ave, Santa Barbara, CA 93110 |
Topics
Last time we had lightning talks, where everyone had an opportunity to spend 5-10 minutes to do a demo, ask other attendees questions about a Drupal problem, etc. Markus was our videographer and posted a video that beautifully captured the evening.
This time we can do the same thing or do something entirely different. Please post your ideas in the comments.
Location
We're meeting at Java Station, a quiet and low key café on the corner of Hollister Ave. and Arboleda Rd. Their phone number is (805) 681-0202. If you arrive early, please try to reserve the "living room" area that has the big table and comfortable seats arranged around it.

Sign up by logging in and clicking the "Signup" button below. Knowing how many people are interested in attending can help us better select good locations in the future. People who sign up will also have last minute details (if there are any) sent to them before the meetup.

meeting ideas
I'd like to discuss events like last weekend's DrupalCamp San Diego and the upcoming Drupal Training in Santa Barbara. Something else I've been wanting to do for a while is have a conversation about contributing in the Drupal community, including things like what the project issue queues are about, how to use IRC to chat with other Drupal users, and so on.
Good topic for a vitual session
A talk on contributing to the Drupal community would be valuable to many of the newcomers to the Drupal Dojo learning and mentoring group. Possibly you could schedule a session, fire up Dojo's Dimdim and let others to in and participate around the world.
Don't think I'm making the trip up, but I'd be happy to help facilitate.

Pun intended! :)
I'll take my laptop, camera and WLAN and let's see what we can do. I took a look at DimDim and it looks like I can set something up on the fly. If it all works, I'll post a URL/info here around 7pm tonight.

If you'd like to talk about DimDim
If you'd like to talk about DimDim tonight or give a demo, that would be a great lightning talk presentation in and of itself. I've had mixed success with DimDim, though, and really don't want problems with it to be a distraction during the meetup.
Drupal Drupal Drupal
I'm not interested in talking about Dim Dim either. I want to talk about Drupal! For good or evil don't matter, just make it Drupal!
But I've had a fair amount of success in the past streaming meetings, so I'll give it or something like it a try. It usually comes down to bandwidth. I bring my own, but you never know how much or how good at a given moment. If all else fails, I just grab some video.

Car pooling
Hello,
I am in for all such meetings, like the one in Santa Barbara, but I wish I had an easier time finding people willing to car pool. The trip to Santa Barbara is 82 miles from the valley and just doesn't make sense for LA people to drive in individual cars.
I'm thinking perhaps there could be some kind of formal car pooling tool in perhaps LA Drupal website?
I've only attended one LA Drupal meeting so far mostly because it is such a drag to negotiate the traffic all the way from the valley right after work.
It would be helpful for people to register their location and willingness to car pool on, say, a dedicated page on LA drupal website or groups.drupal.org, or even better, on a google map -- so that we burn less fuel, reduce stress, and maybe even manage to have meaningful conversations during the ride.
Carpool from Ventura
Hey Jason, wanna carpool? I'm coming down from Ojai that day. Anyone wanna get a bite to eat, either before or after the meetup?
Looking forward to meeting up again.

CarPool
Hi, I am in West Los Angeles, I like to car pool to this meetup too.
More for carpool
Haven´t been to a SB meetup yet. But seeing as how my wheels are MIA, I´m gonna have to +1 for the carpool also. I´m in the San Gabriel Valley (Alhambra, just south of Pasadena, to be specific).
If you still need a ride,
If you still need a ride, let me know and Lee and I can pick you up. I'd like to join the others for food before the meetup, but we'll see how it goes.
Car Pool
This is my first time for the SB meetup tomorrow. I am in Hollywood and interested in carpooling.
carpool
Hi, Benno;
I am in west hollywood, let me know about the carpooling.
time and location?
hi Markus
Sure, be happy to carpool... shall we do sushi beforehand again?
Jason
Sushi
Easiest thing might be to wait out mid-town SB rush-hour traffic at Sakana Sushi Bar off 101 in Montecito and then mosey up to Java Station.

sounds good...
Markus,
See you at 5p, Markus!
That sushi joint can get pretty packed. If enough others decide to join us, we can walk over to the new Sushi 7 (just opened, just behind the Von's) which has more room and is even a little cheaper. Just a thought...
See you tomorrow -
Jason
which ever is better
i prefer the one with the best sushi.

sushi...
both places are good, markus. don't worry!
if we end up at sushi 7...it's a bit hard-to find. you'll see the von's from the other sushi place, and a strip mall attached to the vons. sushi 7 is on the mountain/inland side of that little mall (facing the country club).
you can easily walk from sakana... it's all of 250 yards. but it's tucked away.
Looks like we're meeting at Sakana
Looks like we're meeting at Sakana, but I hear that it isn't great for groups of 5 or more. Sushi 7 sounds like a great alternative.
I'll send out a message to everyone who has signed up for this event.

I'll be driving and I should have 1 or 2 seats available.
I am in or around the San Fernando Valley.
So anyone still trying to work things out / contact me.
No ride at 9:45
Yo dog !! I am downtown we can meet up wherever. Or if Chris and Lee are still around. I can go with them. I just wanna roll out to SB people. (smile) :) I will control yo radio and will up the windows when told I will even pump the gas and put air in the tires and .... LOL
Peace and Love,
L
If you can get yourself to
If you can get yourself to West LA, we can pick you up on our way to Santa Barbara. I just sent you an email with my phone number.
DimDim, works bets with paging not scrooling
I used it for remote training, and when I paged full screens it worked great.
But using the mouse wheel or small arrows to SCROLL messed up the remote screen.
so only click the open part of the elevator bar or use pageup/pagedn keys and it works much better.
Good Luck

I've just been trying to play car pool coordinator and
it turns out that the seats got full up before your post. arrgh.
I'd gladly give you a ride Lz. Even meet you half-way.
totally sorry man. One things for sure though. Next time I go ~
You're seats reserved.
Running Late
Due to sushi. May not be at coffee shop until 7:15 or so
In the meantime, I have set up a flashmeeting that up to 20 people can joint. Here is the url:
http://fm.ea-tel.eu/fm/a82dd5-16178
Note that you do not have to register to use. Just sign in with any handle you like. Also, you can participate using any of video, audio or chat. You don't have to have video cam to watch, just to send. Anyone can audio or chat even if no cam.
Note also you can test audio/video anytime before or during meeting and access settings. if something doesn't work, it's probably a setting or pref for audio or video, so try another setting.
