I just added a topic for the main presentation room. We're still locking down details of the presentation, but here's the jist. also, please bear in mind, this isn't some sort of Sun Micro sales pitch... I hunted them down and asked them to present to the LA community after attending a presentation at BARcamp by Scott Matoon & Tom Brauer of Sun.

I was floored learning how much Sun offers Drupal as it continues to move towards the enterprise and mission critical applications. They also have some really cool development tools - ranging from an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for PHP with a custom Drupal plugin for module development, to "zones" in Open Solaris which can help both in development and production situations. Plus Sun is actively helping and invested in the Drupal community, among the MANY open source projects they contribute to. Did you know Sun runs some Drupal sites? Not to mention some of the guys that work at sun run personal Drupal sites.

With this kind of synergy, its time for a mashup, g33k style.

I am a TOTAL Drupal nube. I said, "I wonder if there is a user group around." Well sure enough there is, it's meeting next week, AND it's 7 blocks away.

I am there!

Still getting over the flu which hit me over the weekend (& even prevented me from attending SCALE)....so I´m doubly-bummed. Can´t wait to check out the new locale. Is Causecast going to be the venue going forward? I really really dig what those folks are doing over there so it´ll be nice to meet the Causecast crew.

There is a question I have for the SUN folks. I have Netbeans 6.1 & cannot find the Drupal plugins. Are they housed in a different repository?

Great lineup! I really like the idea of the Drupal Labs & Drupal Internals areas. Wish I wasn´t sick as winning one of those Drupal training prizes would´ve made my year!

Have fun folks & cya next month. :)

I wondered what happened to

mike stewart's picture

I wondered what happened to you. sorry to hear about the flu. to use the plugins for Drupal you'll need to upgrade to netbeans 6.5 - then get and install plugin from here: https://nbdrupalsupport.dev.java.net

the meeting went really well last night - one of the best we've had in quite a while. minus the drive, i definitely liked the venue. causecast seems like it'll be the venue as long as it continues to work for everyone (of course, causecast included).

LA Drupal Meeting - February 24th ...

ronconnal's picture

Contrary to some of the remarks made here, the meeting was a bust - in the announcement Mike Stewart made for the meeting higher up on the page - "Sun Microsystems: Uncovering the synergies between Drupal & Sun" he bravely states - "... We're still locking down details of the presentation, but here's the jist. also, please bear in mind, this isn't some sort of Sun Micro sales pitch ... "

Well, I am sorry to say that it was nothing but a sales pitch - in addition, the 3 min 30 secs Tom Brauer attempted to show a simple demo of NetBeans as a tool for Drupal development kept crashing.

I have nothing against Sun or Tom Brauer, but the object of these meetings is to learn something about Drupal. I was really looking forward to the "Drupal Labs" that were announced but did not take place.

I really don't mind driving 1 to 2 hours from Orange County that time of day to attend if I could only learn something - I am really looking for presentations like the one Scott Nelson did on the Services Module for example ...

Looking forward to a more productive meeting in the future although I would probably come for Chris' lively introductions anyway ...

Cheers,

RraC

RraC, sorry you felt the

mike stewart's picture

RraC, sorry you felt the meeting was a bust. I hope you try another. every meeting is different.

the intent is for labs to always be an alternative to the main presentation running in parallel - maybe that info wasn't shared too well or it got lost in the mix of news. however, this month i think most people that would typically host or be involved with labs were more interested in the main presentation.

another alternative to the main presentation is an area in the back with couches & chairs open to the group for hanging out and networking, etc.

Concurring with RraC

Grayside's picture

It's a great topic, but working in a predominantly Solaris shop, I already have the 101 on general Sun technologies. A practical presentation/workshop on the same subject matter would be welcome, as we are trying to determine how to get the most out of a Drupal+Solaris combination.

Overall, it was a great first experience despite the lack of concrete details, and I will definitely be back.

Labs and Presentations

Chris Charlton's picture

I must say Sun Microsystems is LA Drupal's most corporate supporter. While not everyone can afford Sun's services/servers, it is our job to show off what's up in the Drupal world. Not to sound defensive, but Sun has been a heavy supporter of Drupal in sponsorships and contributing back. It seems this didn't come across like we had hoped during the main presentation. Don't fret, we meet every month!

This meeting was the first where we announced Labs, and only one person went into the Labs room with their laptop. No biggie, next meeting we ask those intending on visiting the labs maybe setup there before the main presentation and we'll call for people once the news and meeting starts.

We always are open to hearing feedback and suggestions from our members.

labs

ryanscott's picture

I didn't realize the Labs were going on - I thought there was some kind of topic or it would be announced, I guess it was just running concurrently.

I think Labs has huge potential, at least for me, but should think how to give it a tiny bit more promotion/oomph/encouragement, and I will come prepared w questions. I thought there was some kind of presentation and I was waiting for that to start.
