Start:
2012-03-28 19:00 - 22:00 America/Los_Angeles
Event type:
User group meeting

Come contribute! The 4th Monday (change this month due to Drupalcon to) 4th Wednesday in Long Beach we're holding meetups to coincide with core office hours.

Join us in Long Beach or meet us online in our google+ hangout. The first few meetups have been fantastic! During each we either contributed patches or helped somehow in the process. As a result we've already helped get code committed to Drupal core! Want to help? Can't code? no problem. There truly is something for everyone to do. We'll help teach you.

The agenda is simple. Show up, bring a smile, and be prepared to work. Optionally, post link(s) to issues youd like to work on in the comments below. Otherwise, we'll get started on novice issues together.

Don't be intimidated we walk-through the process of reviewing and submitting patches together. If you have never done this before, then this a great place to learn.

If you would like to see a list of issues that we have worked on in last few meetups. Checkout our LA Drupal Issues Wiki Page. Here we list what we have worked on and what the status is of issues that still need some love.

We'll try to breakoout into groups. Typically 2-5 people per group working on a single issue. We have three rooms and 1-2 projectors for groups to share. We also use google+ hangouts if you'd prefer to joinn us virtually. We share the hangout room video & audio on even another big-screen display -- and we have at least one high definition camera on the room. If you have a Mac with an Apple proprietary video connector, please bring a dongle so you can share video on a projector.

Just noting we should be more careful when moving from our regular time slot to check our sister meetups. I did want to go to Burbank for their topic tonight. We will get it right next time.

mbrandon, please note there are two ways to join us online. (see agenda details above). Typically this meetup is coordinated to occur at the same time as core office hours. so IRC is the best for chatting. but we also do screen sharing using google+

Meeting Minutes

bvirtual's picture

This meeting resulted in 3 issues being reviewed by the community. There were 5 people at the meeting, including two first timers, Kiet and Steven, who had technical chomps to jump right in. In Google Hangout we had another 3 or 4.

It was a night full of technical difficulties. Bound to happen once. I'm surprised now at how easy the previous meetings went.

We had technical difficulties with bandwidth, loosing the connection several times, delaying the start of contributing for those at the novice level. That has not happened before. For those attending remotely who hung in there, it was a success. Those who left early, please come again, not letting the technical difficulty give too bad a first impression.

I had laptop woes half the meeting, trying Google Hangout for the first time on Ubuntu 11.04, along with displaying my monitor on the big screen in the room. I had to power down 3 times to unfreeze my laptop, and then handed off the VGA to Frank, whose laptop external video worked fine.

One laptop running the Acquia Stack had difficulty with Drupal inside a folder and connecting to mysql daemon. If I recall right, mysql error codes of 2006 (?) with subcode of 10061. We manually tested all 4 possible issues, and found nothing wrong. Windows Acquia based Drupal, which I have not done before. Anyone having clues on this problem, please post.

A night of technical difficulties. Like the LA weather the last 6 weeks. Alternating rain and sunshine, every two days. Like the last 5-8 years.

I did get my review in on one issue, giving confirmation to Frank's post, and adding Ashok's nod to the patch. I did not track the other two issues that others worked on. I would like to see posting minutes on those.

I'm now finding "contributing" to be more routine, easier, and I understand many in's and out's. I will be "comfortable" picking issues in the future for the night. And even working on them on my own. I'm happy with this degree of success. I will say it came from hard work the last five months during the meeting, with little extra curricular reading.

I note the extra curricular reading now available on the Issue "Novice" level is abundant. I feel it's still inadequate, where my Wiki post points out the needed last info to fill the hole. The steps a novice should do, that work for over 50-75% of all issues.

Our wiki will get some more enhancement later this week from me. And I will propose a page to be put onto D.O. from those enhancements.

Next month, the meeting will be in different location, that will be announced, as it's unknown at this time.
