Event type:
User group meeting

The second Los Angeles Drupal Meeting will take place at Philippe's The Original on Saturday, March 10th at 3 PM.

Philippe's is freeway close and across the street from Union Station, a major public transportation hub. The Map should be consulted for further directions.

We will convene upstairs in one of the additional eating areas.

A telltale copy of Building Online Communities With Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress on the table should be a sufficient shibboleth.

Philippe's hosts a Wifi network.

That is all,
Richard

Anyone going?

I'd love to meet more Drupaler's in the LA area. How many people plan on going to this?

Count me in for any/all LA area meetings.

I'm posting the meeting

Peter-gdo's picture

I'm posting the meeting announcement to over a dozen LA User Group mailing lists. So, hundreds will be reading of this new LA Drupal User Group forming. If they do not attend this second meeting, then at least they will know of our web site, and be able to get to a future meeting.

Coming from Ventura

apperceptions's picture

I'll be coming down for this from Ojai, Ventura. Ping me if you need a ride and are on the way. Been casually playing with Drupal for about a year and am finally getting into some serious work with it. I have basic Java, PHP and mySQL skills. Working on Ourmedia.org and a few other projects, mainly related to videoblogging and distributed media production.

Count me in!

jpklein-gdo's picture

I'm pretty sure there will be a few more like me who were inspired by Richard's recent talk at LAMPsig, yearning for a bit more technical geekery and airing of new ideas. And I'm hoping to pull in a few more designer-types looking to collaborate on new projects.

It's a little bit of a drive for me to get there, but I think the benefits of having 'face-time' with like-minded fellows outweighs the cost. And if you've never been to Philippe's, I can't think of a better excuse to go and enjoy a french-dipped. :)

i would love to meet with

i would love to meet with other LA Drupalers,
but - i can never attend meetings on Saturdays (shabbat),

and if possible - would be nice somewhere on pico (a kosher place...)

I hoping we will have other

Peter-gdo's picture

I hoping we will have other monthly Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings. This second meeting has two main thrusts, first planning the LA Drupal infrastructure, which includes SIGs, along with soliciting volunteers, like you (hint, hint), to find alternative meeting locations (a private room in a restaurant? or other), for either our main monthly meeting, or SIG meetings, like my fav of writing Drupal modules to contribute back to Open Source, or how to modify the default Drupal HTML templates/appearances. The second thrust is to get technical, nuts and bolts, hands on, solve problems, install Drupal on laptops, or remote computers, configuration issues, in other words, ... Doing Drupal!

So, that all said, as one of the major movers behind the second Drupal meeting, I will come right out with it, and ask for suggestions of Kosher meeting places, on Pico, that you know would be receptive to having a group of dress down geeks appear and monopolize many tables.

If you find such a place, then consider your next goal to make arrangements with them,
you picking a night (or a Sunday?), to have a LA Drupal SIG meeting in your favorite
Drupal topic of your choice, and you lead the session for the attendees.

It would be doubly Drupal if there is a place to set up my DPL projector so we can have a big presentation screen to get attendees on the same page (I have a projector screen as well), but this is not required.

What likely is required is an electrical outlet we can put a power strip on for laptop power supplies and access to the Internet, wireless is fine, but we likely could put our own temporary base station as well.

Ok, likely that is too much, way over the top, but hey, what can you expect from a guy like me, who has helped form dozens of LA User Groups?

Disclaimer: I live in Santa Monica and Philippes can be a two hour drive for me.
So, I'm highly motivated to dot the entire LA area with Drupal SIGs, like I did for LUGs.
See www.LALUGS.org for the Linux User Group nearest you.

I think I can make this

I would love to meet some local people that can work with Drupal. Anyone in the Long Beach area?

if there are enough people in the southbay/north OC maybe we could start a Long Beach UG

I'm not sure if I can make it, but..

daniel-san's picture

I'm hoping to meet some others in the area too.

Chadcross, I'm in the San Pedro/Rancho Palos Verdes area. Close to Long Beach.

Awesome

chadcross's picture

Awesome. You wouldn't happen to be a PHP programmer would you. I really need someone to help with future projects using and not using Drupal.

php, not my thing

daniel-san's picture

Sorry man, php's not my area. I've traditionally been an HTML and CSS person and only recently with exposure to CMS's like Drupal and Moodle come into the area of php. I'm hoping to learn more, but I wouldn't be able to help in the programming area.

Hey- just thought I'd put it out there that I'm in Long Beach... I've been deploying drupal since early 4.6.

I'm very interested in networking with other local drupallers

A new LA Open Source User Group is meeting, and we are soliciting volunteers and planners to assist the effort. Also, to get you there early is a short Tech Talk, and to keep you there late is an ending HackFest where our local LA experts will attempt to solve problems and install Drupal on your laptop or remote server.

A new web tool is sweeping the Internet, Drupal.org, a Content Management System (CMS), loaded with mature features, installable modules that interact with each other, that is with little to no impact, creating a stable web admin interface that greatly eases the publishing of new content, or editing old. This Open Source CMS appears to be winning the mind set of CMS software users.

That being the case, we are forming the

Los Angeles Drupal User Group

Our next meeting: March 10, 2007 3 PM

Location: Philippes Restaurant - Upstairs - Second Floor Dining Rooms

This informal meeting will begin with each attendee introducing themselves, for networking, and have an ad hoc technical talk at the beginning, and at the end a "HackFest," general Q&A for any topic, including what is Drupal, and troubleshooting Drupal issues.

The middle of the meeting will be nuts and bolts, not about code and tech, but about the infrastructure of our new User Group, and what pieces we need to put in place, and if any one can provide volunteer efforts to achieve them.

Very bummed that I can't make it, but I just wanted to say that the agenda looks great. I will try, try, try to be part of the meet-ups and I look forward to meeting all of you. Keep it up guys and thank you to all of you that are organizing the L.A. Group. It's greatly appreciated.

Dan

I think I can make it....

mikey_p's picture

I think I'll be taking the train up for this one, and I was wondering if there would be a time in the agenda for some to showcase what they're working on. I have a new module that I'd possibly like to show and get feedback on if that's a possibility.

-Mike

Definitely. BYOLaptop!

jpklein-gdo's picture

Good to hear we're on the same wavelength. Once we get a feel for where everyone is at the beginning of the meeting/get everyone grounded, I'm thinking that the hackfest portion can be run like a mini-barcamp: give everyone the chance to air projects that they'd like to work on, then spend some time collab'ing on code "each one teach one" style.

I'm hoping some people will also join me in helping to spread some laptop-install love. I've got some insight into creating a pretty sweet setup on osX and I'm hoping someone can fill the gaps in my knowledge for WAMP/XAMPP/etc intalls.

My objective for attending the March 10th meeting

peterhf's picture

I have just recently become aware of Drupal and I want to 'get my mind around it'. It appears to be an awsome product and environment presenting many business opportunites that I want to explore.

I look forward to the synergy of this Drupal group.

See you at Philippe's!

Penciled in

ebw@drupal.org's picture

I've drupal projects on 4.x and 5.1, several political campaign sites, one in post-election maintenance, one in production and two in pre-production -- core + civicrm (voter file) + contrib, a commercial site, and the Koufax Awards for blogs on the left hand side of your radio dial. (http://koufax.wabanaki.net). All the work I do is {freebsd|debian|OSX} hosted in my rack, so I'm responsible for volts to votes (and I've no idea how people get work done without shell access).

Things I care about ... i18n/l10n*, streaming media (audio, video), multi-level access, multi-site, and probably more things I'll remember after I click on "submit". Things I'll swap "clue" for ... Flash, ecom, ... there's more but enocaffine.

I'm in Santa Monica Monday's and Tuesdays more often than not, so the trip into town is penciled in.
