Our meetups are a good place for Job seekers and employers to find talent. Also, we typically have raffle prizes including various Drupal books, DVD's, and subscriptions!!!

Presentation Details

Tonight's presentations (in no predictive order) are as follows:

  1. A Safe Return from [Square]Space by @chellman

As we've seen in past LA Drupal presentations by the estimable BTMash, Migrate is an enormously useful and powerful system for bringing content from nearly anywhere into Drupal. I've recently been working with a client who is migrating a very active website from SquareSpace so he can get more control over everything. SquareSpace will export your site, which is great, but unfortunately the export is a single, monolithic, undocumented XML file. Migrate supports XML like a champ, but dealing with this crazy thing took some doing.

Join me as we tear this thing to bits and build it back up into nodes, comments, and users. We'll look at some Drupal screens, some code, some drush, and a hero called XMLStarlet that makes working with enormous XML files so much easier, I can't decide whether to sing or cry about it.

Meetup Info

Users Helping Users and open Q&A

The general meetup begins at 7:00pm but the doors open a little earlier for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

Lightning talks

We have time as well for lightning talks, which are 5 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. If you'd like to give a lightning talk, be sure to come a few minutes early and bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

Job announcements

At the beginning of each meetup LA Drupal provides an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.

Breakout Groups

As we've occasionally done, we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic that's set at the beginning of the meetup. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.

What to bring

Bring a co-worker, maybe your laptop or tablet, but definitely bring your business cards for networking. We do a lot of networking!

JQuery and Drupal

pkosenko's picture

Excellent meeting presentation on JQuery and Drupal. It solved some issues with the use of newer JQuery for Galleria that I was having. Or let me say that I had a solution, but the presenters offered an even better one (better practice) . . . now to go about implementing it!

Oops, I got this in the wrong section. The note was intended for the May Drupal meetup.

But while I am at it, might as well add that I would be interested in a future presentation on Drupal and Ajax. Other people also seemed interested in that.

I would delete this message and put it where it belongs, but I can't seem to find that as an editing option.

Editing a message

fejn's picture

Hi,

As author of a post, you should be seeing an 'Edit' link next to the reply link on your post.
This will let you edit a message & 'repost' it (the garbage message below was my test case for doing that -- you can completely change the title (including none at all), but you need to have some comment text for the submission (presumably, the 'corrected version' of the post.

Cheers,
Jeff

Migrate + XML this month?

chellman's picture

I'm not sure if you're looking for a presentation for June, but I've gone through enough of the Migrate + XML + SquareSpace craziness to have a presentation's worth of material. If that's interesting, let me know!

You are down.

stevenator's picture

Hi @chellman,

This sounds fantastic. I spoke with the other organizers and we will put you down. Please prepare 30-45 minutes as we likely have a second presentation (keeping under wraps until confirmed). PM me with a title and description and I will add you to the event node.

Steve

Confirmed.

chellman's picture

All right, cool. I'll get you that title and description in a little bit.

Drush 6 and Drupal 8?

Tony-Mac's picture

I'd like to get some tips. Does drush 6 work with drupal 8?

Yep.

thanks but

Tony-Mac's picture

I must be doing something wrong cause I am getting a big fat error when I do "drush up".
Fatal error: Call to undefined function _update_cache_clear() in C:\ProgramData\
Drush\commands\pm\update_info\drupal.inc on line 63

It's not you

chellman's picture

Drupal 8 doesn't have the _update_cache_clear() function, so apparently that command hasn't been updated for Drupal 8 yet.

Are you familiar with using project issue queues? There's an issue filed on Drush already for this problem:

https://drupal.org/node/2004154

good to know

Tony-Mac's picture

I was going to go to the issue queue as soon as I had time.... thanks.

Are there other locations for after dark?

pkosenko's picture

Not that I really mind biking it up the hill, but are there OTHER locations in the area to have an after dark? I know that Playa Vista is probably pretty dead at night except for Starbucks. But there might be a real dive bar north of the meeting on Centinela or Inglewood. Or maybe the Scarlet Lady or the Tattle Tale Room on Sepulveda east of the meeting. There is also Petrelli's east of the meeting on Sepulveda and Jefferson, but that might be a little pricey (although it has a great reputation, and I once ate there).

But as I mentioned, not a problem to bike up the hill. Just interested in a little variety.

Rain's talk

It wasn't, but don't despair

chellman's picture

Hey Ali,

It was not recorded, but I'll be going one (or more) better by writing it up and providing example code to go with it. Stay tuned for that within a week. Here's the blog where it'll go: http://www.shooflydesign.org/buzz

I'll post a comment here when it's done, too.

Slides and first post are up
