Presentation Details

Join us May 13th, 2014 for two presentations from community members Justin Gosset and Helior Colorado.

Case Study -- Justin Gossett

Every year new people adopt Drupal as a CMS. Some with years of experience and some with very little experience in the web industry. This presentation is geared towards those who maybe new to Drupal but may feel discouraged on where and how to start. This is a case study showcasing a Drupal site built and developed from the perspective of someone who may not be considered to be a ‘Drupal Ninja’. It will showcase the tools, modules and thought process used to create this Drupal site.

Justin is a LA Drupal Group members since 2009. He has worked on both large and small scale sites. His expertise lies in site building and front-end theming. He has attended two DrupalCons (San Francisco in 2009 and Denver in 2012), and the LA Drupal Camp for the past 2 years. He currently builds small scale Drupal sites for small businesses in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Drupal 8: Plugin System -- Helior Colorado

Drupal 8 introduces a new, yet familiar sub-system for extending and managing Drupal's default behavior: it's The Plugin System. If you've ever developed for Views or CTools then these concepts will should already be familiar to you. The plugin architecture provides you with a common interface that allows you to easily extend and swap out functionality without having to re-implement boiler-plate code, all while keep all your logic in one place instead of scattered around info hooks and procedural callbacks.

If you are learning Drupal 8's new architecture and sub-systems this presentation is aimed at you. Time permitting, we will learn how to identify where plugins exist (find opportunities to extend Drupal), learn how to create a module that provides a plugin for Drupal core, know enough about Dependency Injection, Service Containers, Annotations, and PSR-0 to go a very long way, learn how to define your own plugin type, learn how to build a user interface to manage your own plugin-based sub-system

Meetup Info

Users Helping Users and open Q&A

The general meetup begins at 7:00pm but the doors open a little earlier for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

Lightning talks

There will be no time for lightning talks at this meetup.

Job announcements

At the beginning of each meetup LA Drupal provides an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.

Breakout Groups

As we've occasionally done, if there's time we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic that's set at the beginning of the meetup. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.

What to bring

Bring a co-worker, maybe your laptop or tablet, but definitely bring your business cards for networking. We do a lot of networking!

New Drupal 8 Development preview video

Sharing with everyone here...

This new Drupal 8 development preview video was recorded live today (webinar provided by Acquia), it shows how the new 'Console' module (shown 26 minutes in) is used to generate much of the new scaffolding code needed to build custom modules, controllers, forms, and forms for Drupal 8.

Great meetup!

Thanks for the meetup last night. Two very encouraging presentations on the state of Drupal in our little pocket of LA. I was also encouraged to hear that people had been thinking of a topic the lightning talk smackdown next month.

As a reminder if you are interested in learning more about D8, the link above that Chris posted will build on Helior's presentation.

+1

It was great seeing the presentations by Justin and Helior.

Justin for showing the large improvements in how LoVE's site looked (and for giving clear explanations about the benefits of working with the Drupal Community and a thanks in advance for releasing his module in the wild :D).

And Helior for clearly explaining all the changes happening to Drupal and to not be scared of them (and for clearing the air that Drupal is about moving to really using PHP5 instead of just about Symfony2).

Participate if you want to learn D8

The video above by Acquia (with the plugin by Jesus Molivas) is fantastic for getting started with module development for D8. I also want to point out (as Cary did last night) D8 will move along for release faster if the major /critical issues in the issue queue get resolved. This is a great time (when it is not? ^_~) to try and start looking at the issues. You will learn a lot about how the Drupal community works on Drupal, you will learn about the internals of D8 (or atleast the parts you are interested in), and more confident about launching a D8 site (and creating new modules/plugins) when the time comes.
