We're happy to invite you to a special Joint SGV Drupal / SGVLUG Meetup and networking event in Pasadena, California, on August 14, 2014.

In addition to great food, open source presentations, news and other geekery, one of the presentations this evening will be Building Droplabs: a Business Model for the Open Source Community by two of Droplabs' founders, Lee Vodra and Christefano Reyes.

In case you missed this talk at SCALE 12x and GLADCamp 2014, this is your chance to hear about how Droplabs, the low- to no-cost teaching and learning community for Drupal and open source communities, was started in 2011 and how to start a makerspace in your neighborhood.

Join us at Burger Continental from 7-9pm for a fun evening of dinner, drinks and networking with one of the best tech crowds in LA.

About SGVLUG

SGVLUG is a sister group of SGV Drupal and is one of the oldest and most active Linux User Groups in the Greater Los Angeles Area. In addition to Linux, the group also shares interests in other free and open source software, all forms of technology, and the discussion of issues that arise with the these new tools, such as privacy rights.

SGVLUG attracts members from throughout LA County including Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, and eastward throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Our members include software developers, system administrators, hardware engineers, and software users of all levels of experience. Many work in the technology field as employees, contractors or consultants, and enjoy the learning and networking opportunities available from the group.

We also have many members that serve as volunteers of their time and skills at various local events, including the annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE).

Building Droplabs: a Business Model for the Open Source Community

Droplabs is a coworking space, makerspace and computer lab near Downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 2011 by 7 entrepreneurs and members of the Drupal and open source communities, Droplabs quickly grew out of its humble space to become a larger community of freelancers, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and lifelong learners.

In 2013, Droplabs was recognized by Drupical as the world's Top Drupal Location. Events at Droplabs have included the Drupal Job Fairs, the Drupal Employers Summit, the 12-week Module Development Boot Camp and Drupal Design Camp LA… but most importantly our community is made up of members who support each other personally and professionally in a positive environment.

Some of the topics we'll cover include:

  • Identifying a space to build a location-based community
  • Traffic and parking in Downtown Los Angeles…
  • Making decisions in a consensus-based organization
  • Empowering members to become leaders
  • Disrupting the coworking business model
  • Paying the bills (rent, insurance, staff, etc.)
  • … and still having fun!

We'd love to see more places like Droplabs, and we're happy to talk at SGVLUG about how others can replicate our success — and avoid or overcome the challenges we've had over the years.

Would anyone like to carpool from Droplabs DTLA? Lee and I will be there and can transport one lucky passenger to tonight's meetup in Pasadena.
