Hi, I posted on a few freelance sites and also on the Drupal job board but I have been advised to post in the Drupal LA group because I would ideally like to find someone in Los Angeles to meet with me in person. I don't see a great place to categorize what I am looking for, does anyone have suggestions on how I could find a drupal tutor to work with me a few hours a week?

Drupal training
What level of Drupal are you seeking training (tutoring) for?
I ask because there have been discussions about starting a mentoring program but logistics make it a bit complicated. There are meetups that try to accommodate tutoring, the Burbank one more so than the west LA one, but even there it's tough to get the kind of attention needed for beginners.
I attempted to start a workshop for beginners when I thought I had a venue for it, but the venue didn't pan out so I stopped pursuing the idea.
I am not a beginner anymore but far from a Drupal Guru. I would suggest meeting up prior to the regularly scheduled west LA meetup where I (and possibly others) would be happy to provide whatever guidance I can, but even that venue is moving and undetermined at this time.

Local mentoring
Melissa, the best way to learn Drupal is to use the videos at buildamodule.com. Chris Shattuck from SF does a fantastic job with bringing beginners up to an experienced Sitebuilder, an intermediate themer and an intermediate Drupal developer level. Buildamodule also has videos up for D8, the next version of Drupal.
What I would love to see with mentoring is having local people be willing to answer questions as beginners/intermediates tackle more complicated Drupal freelance projects and build beyond their current knowledge. For example, sure, I can build a map view, but how do I manage what anonymous users see or what about using cache so the map updates often or how do I create pop-ups at each point? All things that need more advanced Drupal experience and a good knowledge of the server and other technologies. How do I go to that level?
That's what I would like a mentoring group to help with. I spent hours researching how (and if) a view updates and a simple comment at last Tuesday's WLA meetup pointed me to Views cache which I hadn't explored yet. If there would be a group of mentors where I could post the question and gotten the answer or spend 5 minutes on the phone with someone more experienced, it certainly would have helped!
Joyseeker, great ideas. Thank
Joyseeker, great ideas. Thank you! The online videos absolutely help (that is how I have gotten this far)... Rick thank you. I will need to come to more meetings. I have been to the west LA one but not for a long time.
