User group meeting

The last meetup went well and we've been invited back for another meetup. We're meeting at the offices of at Digital Playspace in Echo Park on June 16th, 2010. Please join us!

While this is a new meetup in Central LA, you're definitely encouraged to attend as many meetings as you can, including the LA Drupal meetups in Santa Monica. Our hope is that by having a venue that's centrally located in Los Angeles, LA Drupal can offer the same great presentations, Q&A sessions, news and announcements to those who aren't able to commute to the westside for the LA Drupal meetups in Santa Monica.

Attending the LA Drupal meetups is one of the best ways to meet and talk with other Drupaleros. Whether it's about finding solutions to problems you've been having, sharing something you've learned or just meeting interesting like-minded people, the LA Drupal meetups are an essential resource for Drupal professionals and hobbyists alike. At this meetup there will be several presentations as well as time for open discussions and job announcements. Afterward, several of us may go to a local bar or restaurant.

This event is free – in fact, there will be raffle prizes and food and drinks will be provided – and no RSVP is required. In order to have enough food for everyone, though, we need to know how many people will be attending so please sign up by logging in and clicking the Sign up button below. Knowing how many people are interested in attending helps us better select good locations in the future and those who sign up will also have last minute details (if there are any) sent to them before the meeting.

When: Wednesday, June 16th, 2010 from 7:00-9:30pm
Where: Digital Playspace, in Echo Park, Los Angeles at 1217 Bellevue Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90026

Agenda

If you'd like to give a presentation, announce a job position or ask any questions of the group, please come a few minutes early or leave a comment below. If presenting, be sure to bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

   Job announcements and open Q&A

Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom from the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

   Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers at managers at ladrupal.org.

   How the Drupal community works

Drupal isn't just a software project. It's also a growing community of individuals, teams and companies who build, design, theme and develop sites with Drupal. We'll talk about what it means to be a "good citizen" in the community, how to best utilize the resources available on Drupal.org and the *.drupal.org sites and what etiquette there is when engaging in discussions on Drupal.org and on IRC.

Drupal best practices (we'll do it this time, promise!)

Following best practices, many of which are listed in the best practices handbook pages on Drupal.org, can help help a project stay on track and keep both clients and Drupal professionals happier in the long run. We'll have an overview of the Drupal community's best practices for site building and development, as well as tips from themers and developers at Drupal shops in the Los Angeles area.

Location

Google MapWe're meeting at the offices of Digital Playspace in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Digital Playspace is the driving force and operator of Digital Dollhouse, which was built by a team of talented designers and developers, many of whom are based in the Los Angeles area. To find out more about Digital Dollhouse, check out the case study published to the Drupal.org front page last year.

If the area looks familiar at all, it's because Bob's Market, the convenience store across the street, has been in several movies, including The Salton Sea and Fast and the Furious. Bob's is one of our favorite bodegas and it's run by the nicest couple on the planet. Be sure to tell them "anyeong haseyo!" for us if you see them.

The LA Drupal community in and around Los Angeles, California, is one of the world's largest regional Drupal user groups. With regular Drupal trainings, monthly meetings and social gatherings, LA Drupal is Southern California's largest hub for all things Drupal. LA Drupal is also the producer of the annual DrupalCamp LA conference, the largest independent Drupal event in the world for two years running.

Minor addition

Just wanted to add that: Afterwards, we may go to a bar or local restaurant OR a really good local taco truck. ;)

The truck we went to after

The truck we went to after the last meetup was fantastic. Tacos Arrizas is of my favorites. Unfortunately, they don't have much seating to speak of so we might hit the truck first and then go to Masa right around the corner.

Discussion Topic

Could you guys show how to automate or where to put the script in Drupal... I know this might be a minor topic but it would be nice if someone one show how it can be done.

We're like Zombo.com. We can

We're like Zombo.com. We can do anything!

Can you further explain what you'd like the topic to be about?

June 16th's Meeting Recap

My hard to follow brief notes more suitable for me to read.
Not in any particular order (I re-arranged them), and not complete (about half).
I post these in the hopes to give those who did not attend an idea of how rapid the topics come up, and go by, and how many. It was fun. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Hard to find, harder to park, Victorian House.

Roundtable who are you - Each Attendee states who, what, where, when, why, how, with the pipe in the smoking room.

Drush review, including a feature that motives me to upgrade to 3.0 - Update Drupal Core (really?)

"New" Features Module
Export these modules, these settings, etc (no node content).
And upload feature to add to site, as long as prerequiste modules are there (comments and views).
Alternative to CVS, receipe for site, use Features.

To migrate "features, and content" , first push cck and views, then content.
Can not yet do both at the same time (same module), that is they remain separate steps.

Night News Challenge - huge grant for drupal development
DevelopmentSeed.com
OpenAtrium.com

python script exports base camp projects into open atrium.
suite of 3 modules - need to learn these three to code OA.
Shouts are comments on node

Modules Mentioned (some of them):

Boxes
deploy
planet module - drupalplanet.org - indices...
exploitdb.com

Chris C. created OpenDrupalCampLA Installation Profile
Install COD via OpenAtrium and get install profile (saving 20 hours of work).
- For D7, not in Drupal

Install Profile "Chains" perhaps only in D7, maybe in D6.
During the first and only one install step.

ctools export enabled more install profiles.

How to Learn Drupal:
Self starters expect everyone to operate in the same way - quote from Mike
If you spent as much time researching the issue as typing your reply ... - quote from Miguel

Search Drupal forms via Google:
site:drupal.org inurl:forum_name_here keywords_here
Search Miester at Acquia, drupal search within cms is best
Lucerne vs Solr vs Facet vs core search
drupalcodesearch.com
drupalcontrib.org - Earl Miles - search all contrib
api.drupal.org only has core
drupalmodules.com

solr attachments (?) module, a helper to solr, will search files in filefield (uses apache?)
Searches pdfs, word, etc.
