Great, I plan on coming :) as long as there is newbie interaction - I have to learn to crawl before I walk ...

awesome.... hopefully its full of newbies.... I always get overwhelmed when I come to other meet-ups...

Newbie is a relative term.

Hi Charles,

This is a casual, small group get together with the goal of helping each other get things done with Drupal.

We're all new to something, so this is meant to be a general Q&A session where Ventura locals can hookup with a few other folks who want to help each other learn what they need.

Quick answers or longer explanations are up to you. Come on by and ask away! Or come by and help others. :)

Need more structure? Then suggest a specific topic you are interested in and an example of how you want to use it. We'll see if we can work it out together.

I'll be there!

Looking forward to meeting other local Druplars ;-)

Bring some books.

apperceptions's picture

Hey Alicia!

How about bringing a few Drupal books along for folks to browse. People often ask what's a good one for starting out. You have the best collection around. Can you bring a few you like?

thanks!

Looking forward to meeting up

Got some books to share and looking forward to meeting folks who want to learn more about how to do things with Drupal. Looking forward to some pizza too!

Productive Meetup

It was a small group, but we quickly ate up the 2 hour meeting time discussing and working on solutions to specific questions that we had about our day to day use of Drupal. We just opened our laptops, moved some benches to make for better viewing and jumped in. Here is a summary of our main discussion points.

  • Installing multiple Drupal sites under OSX, using MAMP. This turned out not to be a discussion of Drupal multi-sites,but more about simple Drupal configuration issues in settings.php.

  • We looked at theming issues associated with using the Nice Menus module. In particular, we discussed how certain CSS selectors effected menus made from <ul> and <li> elements. Also discussed related id's css classes and selectors, such as .menuparent and #block-nice_menus-1

  • Showed how to turn on built in web developer tools in Safari to examine Nice Menu html and CSS. Compared with Chrome and Firefox.

  • We discussed CSS selector precedence or weighting and how it applies to Drupal theming, especially sub-menus.

  • Discussed use of jQuery Cycle plugin and corresponding Views Cycle module with Views in order to create a 'slider' like one that a participant had seen on an existing site.

The participants made it clear that what they want is basic help. They feel that Drupal Camps and regional meetups are great, but that many of the discussions and presentations are either way over their heads or not something they can take back and directly apply to their own Drupal sites at this time. They appreciate those events, but are also looking for something more basic and practical.

We plan to hold bi-weekly meetings of a 'clinic' nature; one where you come in and get help on specific questions, practice skills and work on your own projects around others who can help each other.

While the pizza parlor was a nice place to meet, it's not an ideal working and learning environment. Wifi, no sports/TV's, more space, projector, etc all make for a nicer workspace. Also, it looks like being in central Ventura is not that big of a convenience.

So we plan to hold future work group meetings, or clinics if you prefer, in people's homes.

We also discussed organizing some classes this summer to look specific aspects of Drupal that the group would like to cover. The first one of these will be on using and theming Views on June 19th in Ojai.

Last night's meeting in Ventura

pia's picture

I came away extremely pleased with now being ready for my weekend project in Drupal by being able to run several sites under Mamp on my local machine. In addition I learned more about css and Nice Menus, and hope to conquer my issue there soon. Thank you Markus!

Please count me in for the 19th!

My house in Santa Barbara is always open for a meeting, and I have wifi, lots of chairs, and curiosity :)

Curious, curiouser and most curious ...

Thanks Pia!

apperceptions's picture

Just pick a date that works for you. It doesn't even have to be a Wednesday unless folks like having a regular night for this. How about sometime in July?

Nice synopsis ...

Follow ups and feedback are so important. Good Job Markus!

Meetup Locations

WickenInc's picture

Markus I wasn't able to join the meetup but have a few thoughts on your next meetup. If you want to do it in Ojai you are welcome to use my office which is a converted garage that has a few large desks and plenty of room for added tables, etc. If you want to in Ventura then the Ventura Incubator may be a great location, I know the organizers there if you need to speak with them http://www.v2tc.com/about/visualtour

Though I am mainly a lowly project manager / biz dev guy Drupal is all we do so staying connected locally is up my ally.

Best,

Rob Wickens

Thanks Rob!

apperceptions's picture

We could hold a Drupal Block Party (pun intended) between your place and mine :)

(we're neighbors)

One of the participants from Santa Barbara offered to host sometime.

I love the idea of the incubator. That sounds like fun.

I think the main thing we are finding is that our homes or home/offices are often good locations for small groups.

Also, we all have skills that complement each other. I'll bet you have a lot experience managing Drupal projects and many of us could use a few pointers on how not to under-estimate project costs or resource needs. This is just as important, if not more so, than many technical aspects of Drupal.

No lowly's here, we're all highly's ;)

Ready and willing

WickenInc's picture

Just contact me next time you are ready to plan a meetup!

Cheers,

Rob

June 23rd?

apperceptions's picture

We talked about meeting every two or three weeks. So, how about June 23rd?

June 23rd

WickenInc's picture

Sounds good to me. If at my place just let me know time and est attendance so I can setup some table and chairs.

7-9pm is standard time for ventura

apperceptions's picture

hard to say how many. was just four last time. might be five or six next time. might be just and me rob :)

never can tell

the good thing about a work group is that it's flexible. just need good wifi mainly. chairs and table space good too, but couches and floors often work too. coffee always a plus ;)

Wed June 23rd Drupal Clinic in Ojai, Ventura

apperceptions's picture

Rob,

You still up for hosting the Wednesday, June 23rd Drupal Clinic?

Last time, people seemed to like the name 'Clinic', so we'll go with that.

If so, you might want to post an event with directions, etc.

Markus

apperceptions's picture

This week's Ventura clinic (aka workgroup/studygroup) will be at

Ojai Digital Dojo
963 W. El Roblar Drive
Ojai, California 93023

Wednesday, June, 23rd, 2010, 7pm-9pm

This is actually what is known as 'Meiners Oaks' area of the Ojai Valley.

Free wi-fi, coffee, tea, kitchen access if you want to brown bag it. We can also send out for Pizza. There are organic market, burgers, Mexican food, etc within a few blocks if you want to pick something up.

No presentations on Wednesdays, just a small group of folks helping each other with Drupal questions.

Aimed mainly at newbies, but open to anyone with questions or anyone willing to help others find answers to their questions.

p.s. We are planning a small DrupalQue for Saturday, June 26, 10am-3pm at same location. A DrupalQue is a BBQ, sandwiched between two nice slices of Drupal learning. We have room for about 4 more people, probably best for relative beginners. Session topics will be introductions to using and theming views. Workshop is free. Gourmet vegan lunch catered by local chef Brian Shay, plus usual burgers & dogs. Lunch includes one guest and there will also be a meeting of the unofficial Drupal widows & orphans group for partners of workshop attendees who would rather spend a Saturday in Ojai getting a massage, pedicure, shopping, hiking, horseback riding or lounging at the pool. See Ojai Digital Dojo blog for details and reservations. We will be offering many of these throughout the Summer.

Pasadena

The Ventura meet up sounds like quite the hit. Not to steal the Ventura thunder but would there be an interest in starting a meet up in Pasadena? Ventura is just a little too far for my liking. I have a fairly unused corner office in Old Town Pasadena (right above the Cheesecake Factory). It's sad that it's not getting much use because it's such a great place to work in a great location. The office overlooks the corner of Colorado and Fair Oaks. We can meet on the Wednesdays that the Ventura group doesn't meet. It would also be great if at least a couple people from different skill levels show up (so the "hardcore" programmers can push the envelope together and newbs can experiment new things together).

Let me know if there is any interest. We can meet as early as the 16th if people want.

Not stealing thunder

apperceptions's picture

I think small groups are cool and don't think of Ventura as 'claiming' a specific night. Our goal is not so much to attract or compete for more people as it is to get things done as a work or study group.

I have two clients in the Pasadena area. i'll pass info about local meets to them if you start something up.

Go for it!

Let a thousand small workgroups bloom in peoples homes and offices :)

I think it's a great idea. I am on board for Pasadena. Actually we had a few meet ups at my house in Hollywood. Specifically to work on the new ladrupal.org website. I am open to host community meet ups. There are some pics on flickr.com and youtube.com Search for hollywood drupal

I'd be up for meeting in Pasadena - but I can't do Wednesday or Thursday nights. Ventura is way too far for me also - I live in North Hollywood.

Let me know if you'd be interested in meeting on a Monday or Tuesday night in Pasadena?

Thanks,
Lindsay

Absolutely. Should we make

Sknight17's picture

Absolutely. Should we make it Tuesday night then? Does 7:30-9:30 work best for most people? We do have wifi and plenty of work room (I will post pictures soon). There is a Coffee Bean across the street and a Starbucks a block away (we also have a couple bags from Jones Coffee Roaster we can brew here too). The address is 1 S Fair Oaks suite 201, Pasadena if anyone wants to gmap it.

I'm down

LindsayC-1's picture

I'm down for Tuesday night at the time and location you proposed. Would that be this coming Tuesday, June 15th? Will be great to connect with other Drupalers in the area! :)

~Lindsay~

PS - Either way, it'd probably be a good idea to start a new thread so people can see this and respond, right?

Tuesday

Benno Sebastian's picture

Tuesday 7:30 works for me. Is it the 15th of this month?

Post a new event?

apperceptions's picture

Might be a good idea to post a new event for Pasadena.

Yup, Tuesday the 15th at
