Agenda

   Community and job announcements

There's always a lot going on with Drupal and LA Drupal. We kick off our meetings with community announcements and Drupal news.

   Presentations & Lightning Talks TBA

Details coming.

   Raffles & Prizes

We love our sponsors and our sponsors love us! We have several raffle prizes ranging from good books to software to DVDs.

No purchase necessary, void where prohibited and you must be present to win. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers at managers at ladrupal.org.

   Open Q&A - Ask a Drupal Question!

Everyone has a Drupal question every now and then and the open Q&A session is when attendees help each other with answers from the collective wisdom from the group. Half of our monthly attendees are newbies and first-timers. There's no such thing as a bad question, just bad answers!

   Lightning talks

We usually have lightning talks which are 5-10 minute quick presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. If you'd like to give a lightning talk, be sure to come a few minutes early and bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

   Networking and cleanup

There's plenty of time for people to network and make connections at the end. We do ask that if you stay to please help putting away some of the chairs and any little cleanup to leave our beloved venue as clean as when we found it.

   Afterparty

Sometimes people like to call an afterparty once the meeting is over, allowing more Drupal chatter and networking to take place. Usually people go out for food and drinks. Keep an eye out for comments below to know if an afterparty will happen for this night.

About LA Drupal

The LA Drupal community in and around Los Angeles, California, is one of the world's largest regional Drupal user groups. With regular Drupal trainings, monthly meetings and social gatherings, LA Drupal is Southern California's largest hub for all things Drupal. LA Drupal is also the producer of the annual DrupalCamp LA conference, the largest independent Drupal event on the United States West coast.

If you aren't already part of LA Drupal, it's easy to become a member. We have several meetings every month that are free and open to everyone. There are also social gatherings and formal working meetings that sometimes happen throughout the month. Events are announced here and at the LA Drupal website.

10 min talk

snorkers's picture

A bit of a squeeze for a 5 min lightning talk, but can walk through how I themed node links ('Add a comment' etc that appears under any post). Blog post to save the effort of presenting however... http://snorkers.blogspot.com/2010/05/theming-drupal-node-links.html

Chris Charlton's picture

Sometimes the 5-minute limit makes the lightning talks more fun but there is always the option of giving another 5 minutes when needed. You've got 10 minutes now. :)

I shall treasure every single second of those bonus minutes. However, could always try speaking a bit more quickly to squeeze it in ;)

May have to postpone... not

I'm up for this. Does anyone have ideas for a venue? We can always head over to La Cabaña in Venice (on Lincoln and Rose) like we've done before.

Noisevox.org

Bao Truong's picture

I've just launched the website for one of my startups called Noisevox. Believe it or not, this is built on a Drupal 5. This is my first major launch of a website that I've built from the ground up and its a site that I am very proud of. It's basically the "Facebook" for music journalists, artists and hardcore fans. Most of the artists on this site ha...ve a cult following and their music is really unique. If you are an artist or a hardcore fan, this is the site where your voice can be heard by people who truly have a passion for music and artistic expression.

With the help of MTV veteran John Norris, we were luck enough to score some interviews with key artists such as Lady Gaga and Moby. You can check out our video series at http://www.noisevox.org/nvtv.

We are currently in the beta phase of the launch so please log on to http://www.noisevox.org/ and give us feedback and be sure to connect your account to facebook to get your noisevox activities featured on your facebook profile. Thanks again and looking forward to seeing you all on noisevox.org. Be sure to drop me a line on my Noisevox profile at http://www.noisevox.org/user/189/profile when you log on. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Best,
-Bao

That looks great. Nice

That looks great. Nice work! How has your experience been while being hosted at GoDaddy?

Will you be able to give a case study at one of the upcoming LA Drupal meetups?

Believe it or not, this is built on a Drupal 5.

Can you detail the reasons why Noisevox is on D5 and not D6?

Hey Chris, Thanks for your

Bao Truong's picture

Hey Chris,

Thanks for your input. I would love to do a short case study at the next Drupal meetup. Yeah it was built on Drupal 5 because we started this project almost three years ago during the infancy of D6 and needed a mature platform with mature modules to jump start the project. Then we got a bit of cold feet and feared that doing an upgrade would break all of the functionality we already custom-developed on D5. If resources permit, we would love to do a revamp of the site with all the nice features that D6 now offers.

We actually hosted the site with hotdrupal for a while and it was great performance and great service, but we realized that the site really slowed down when you brought in our concert feeds and started generating thousands of nodes. We then moved to Amazon's EC2 cloud environment and installed varnish, and the site had no slow downs what so ever.

I can do a lightning talk about using Drush + Module Builder to prep a new module.

Module Builder is a module that helps build modules by preparing the files and some code needed to get a new module started; when mixed with Drush (a command line tool for Drupal) a developer can be ready-to-code in under a couple minutes.

Drush Cleanup instead of MB

Chris Charlton's picture

Instead of doing a lightning talk on Drush w/ Module Builder (module) I chose to present my Drush plug-in - Drush Cleanup - http://drupal.org/project/drush_cleanup - which cleans out the Drupal core .TXT files not needed to run the site (like README.txt).

I can, and plan to do the Drush + MB lightning talk at another meetup.

At the meetup in Echo Park last week

christefano's picture

At the meetup in Echo Park last week, a few of us talked about Drupal.org's Planet news feed and how it really needs to be publicly indexed and searchable, so I set up Planet Drupal at http://planetdrupal.org and used Managing News to do it. I can do a brief presentation on what Planet and Managing News are all about.

Carpool from Long Beach?

patrickfgoddard's picture

If anyone is interested in carpooling from the Long Beach(ish) area, hit me up. I can take three more people in my car.

I'd also be interested in staying after for any post-meet up meet ups.
