Agenda

DOORS OPEN AT 6PM, PRESENTATIONS START AT 7:30PM.

Drupal study groups & workgroups are meeting up from 6:00-7:30pm. Come join people in the same boat when it comes to Drupal. Learn with each other from each other.

If you'd like to give a presentation, announce a job position or ask any questions of the group, please come a few minutes early or leave a comment below. If presenting, be sure to bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

   Job announcements and open Q&A

Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom of the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

   Raffle! Prizes!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors. Books, video training, gift certificates - each attendee has multiple chances to win! If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers at http://ladrupal.org/contact

Case study on Drupal at the California Institute of the Arts

CalArts recently relaunched their Drupal site using Drupal 6. Ashok Modi, one of LA Drupal's members and frequent presenters, will be presenting on:

  1. CalArts' previous site
  2. CalArts' requirements
  3. Modules being used
  4. Custom module creations
  5. Migrating outward from a development environment into production
  6. Future plans
  7. Q&A

   Lightning talks

Following his earlier presentation on Drupal Gardens, Christefano of Exaltation of Larks (tonight's drinks sponsor) will demonstrate the hosted Drupal service, Buzzr, and highlight similarities and differences from Acquia's Drupal Gardens. During the meeting's raffle, a paid Buzzr membership will be awarded to one lucky attendee, compliments of Buzzr!

Chris Charlton will be presenting on Zenophile, a Drupal theme which helps by generating Zen sub themes files quickly and easily (without copy-paste waste).

What are lightning talks? They're 5-10 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. If you'd like to give a lightning talk, be sure to come a few minutes early and bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

About LA Drupal

The LA Drupal community in and around Los Angeles, California, is one of the world's largest regional Drupal user groups. With regular Drupal trainings, monthly meetings and social gatherings, LA Drupal is Southern California's largest hub for all things Drupal. LA Drupal is also the producer of the annual DrupalCamp LA conference, the largest independent Drupal event in the world for three years running.

If you aren't already part of LA Drupal, it's easy to become a member. We have several meetings every month that are free and open to everyone. There are also social gatherings and formal working meetings that sometimes happen throughout the month. Events are announced here and at the LA Drupal website.

Meetup ends promptly at 9:00pm

Chris Charlton's picture

Another meetup to celebrate Drupal! We have tables for our laptops (let us know if you like the setup). Since we are meeting at a public library this month we will need to promptly exit by 9:00pm.

We are looking for a food & drink sponsor. Food can equal pizza for up to 60 people (plus plates & napkins); drinks equal a variety of soda plus bottled water.

Presentation on our recent site launch?

BTMash's picture

We recently relaunched our site (or sites? still hard to figure out which to use) at the California Institute of the Arts (http://calarts.edu) using Drupal 6. Me and my coworkers are quite happy with how the site has finally come up and running and, pending the interest level, would be really happy to present a case study on:

0) Our previous site.
1) Our requirements.
2) Modules being used.
3) Our module creations.
4) Migrating outward from a development environment into production.
5) Some of our future plans (or my own hopes ^_~).
6) Q&A.

congrats!

christefano's picture

This presentation sounds great to me. How much time would you like? Keep in mind that our meeting is only an hour an half this time.

Sweet!

BTMash's picture

I'll try to fit everything important for the presentation between 30 and 45 minutes.

Thanks for letting me present

BTMash's picture

Thank you to the organizers for letting me present and continue with the presentation so close to the cutoff time. And thank you for the positive words from the people I got a chance to speak with after the presentation - I really appreciate it. I have uploaded the slides from the presentation to slideshare at http://www.slideshare.net/BTMash/calarts-presentation. I'd be happy to answer questions regarding what we did here or at the next meetup :)

So quickly?

BTMash's picture

I wasn't expecting the screencast to be up so quickly. John, you're awesome as always.

Environment indicator

jromine's picture

A couple people asked about the red left margin in Ashok's talk (on his dev site). I believe this is provided by the Environment Indicator module.

John Romine

You're right

BTMash's picture

I am using the Environment Indicator module - very useful for distinguishing between dev/stage/production environments (the last of which wouldn't have it enabled) for us and ensuring we're testing things out on the right domain.

Very cool website(s)

focal55's picture

Great design and development work. I would be interested in the case study presentation.

I also am interested to hear more

dmarkcox's picture

Especially Search, what does it do and how it is implemented.

Hi, everyone!

I'll probably have a few more job avails to announce at the September 28th meetup but I do have some that are super-hot right now and would be to your advantage to have this info before the meetup.

I need Drupal developers to work on a website focused on the gaming industry, as well as an interactive producer who has already produced Drupal-based websites.

What my client has at this point is already pretty sophisticated, Drupal-wise (not just your run-of-the-mill theming) and the next piece requires heavy-duty programming and needs to play nicely together with existing pieces that power not only this site but other websites that this company already has in place. The client's doing some cool out-of-the-box, never-been-done-before integrations so it's a really fun project.

They'd prefer someone who can work onsite in Beverly Hills, and it starts 9/30 thru 11/25.

So, if you or someone you know is up to it, I'd love to hear from you. Best thing to do is email me at dezzi@filtertalent.com with a link to samples of your work, your hourly rate and a resume.

Hi Diane, please consider

christefano's picture

Hi Diane, please consider posting a job announcement rather than posting here in the comments. You'll reach a larger audience and it really helps up keep the comments here focused on questions and feedback regarding the meetup in question.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, it would be great if you'd like to attend our meetings and make your job announcement in person. You'll be given a few minutes to speak and get your message out to all our attendees.

Can I bum a ride?

corypark's picture

I'm getting dropped off at the meetup on Tuesday so I'm hoping someone could give me a lift from there. I live in Toluca Lake (Lankershim and Riverside) but any Metro Red Line station will do...

Does this mean that nobody

corypark's picture

Does this mean that nobody can give me a ride?... or that nobody looks at this thread?? :)

any plans for drupal after dark?

anewidentity's picture

anywhere between santa monica and culver city is good for me - that way I can crawl home.

It looks like a toss up

christefano's picture

It looks like a toss up between the Ye Old King's Head on Santa Monica Blvd. and 2nd St. and the new Santa Monica food truck lot at the California Heritage Museum at 2612 Main St.

Food trucks will be at the lot until 9:30-10pm, so I plan to go there first and then to the King's Head.

possible ride to the valley

stevenator's picture

@Corypark, I am carpooling with another drupalero from his workplace to the meeting. It is possible that we may have room for a 3rd. We would need to pick up my car near the Skirball center, but once I have it I can take you to Taluca Lake as I am in Valley Village. You can message me through the group and I can give you more info.

Lightning Talk: Zenophile; Drush workgroup 6PM

Chris Charlton's picture

I can do a lightning talk (demo) of Zenophile, which helps by generating Zen Sub-Themes files quickly and easily (without copy-paste waste). http://drupal.org/project/zenophile

Also, since I should be at the venue by or near 6pm, if there is nothing else for me to do with the other managers, I can offer time at a Drush table to discuss/demo/answer your Drush questions.

Into the Drush table

stevenator's picture

Considering you are the Drush man in the group I would be certainly interested in seeing some use cases from you or whatever you would talk about at the table. I brought the idea of it up at the last meetup but went with features, so this would be a nice discussion. I will be there shortly after 6.

pizza

jstoller's picture

Just to clarify, am I correct in assuming there's no pizza this time? I want to make sure I'm prepared.

that's right

christefano's picture

This is an important detail and I'm glad you asked. We've put out several requests for food sponsors on Twitter, Facebook and at the past few meetups and haven't finalized anything yet.

If this continues, we might ask that people chip in $5-10 so that we can order food to be delivered. If there's extra money left over, we can use it as a rolling reserve for food and drinks at the next meetup.

Meanwhile, there's a new food truck lot at the California Heritage Museum at 2612 Main St. that several of us will be going to around 5-6pm. Follow @smfoodtrucklot on Twitter for details.

Bummer!

dezzirae's picture

Bummer! I can't make it to tonight's Meetup. My 15-month old gave me her cold, and I'd rather not pass that along to any of you Drupaleros. I already got to meet a couple of you in the last few weeks, and I hope to meet more at the next Meetup! -dezzi

Santa Monica Public Library was an excellent location.

bangalos's picture

I wanted to mention that Santa Monica Public Library was an excellent choice for drupal meetup. It is in a great location (next to beach, near to 3rd street promenade which is full of nice places to eat). The presentation room was spacious. The Parking on the side streets is free on weekdays after 6 pm. Kudos for choosing the location!!!! Hope we continue the meetups there.
