3 cheers for webchick

for putting in so much time and effort into Drupal's participation and wrangling us wild and woolly SoC crowd. On the outside it might appear that SoC just happens automagically and students hookup with orgs overnight but as we saw with our own eyes, there's a huge amount of work the org admins have to put in to get slots from Google and get proposals scored and mentored. So thanks webchick for making Drupal SoC a great experience and being an outstanding member of the awesome Drupal community.

Welcome to the Drupal community!

Welcome, accepted Summer of Code students! This post contains important information about prerequisites for starting your project. Please read it carefully.

Google has awarded Drupal 21 slots for Google Summer of Code. This year there were many strong applications, and narrowing the field to the top 21 was not an easy task. Thanks to all the mentors who helped out with the evaluating, and congratulations to all of the students. We look forward to working with you this summer! :)

Although coding doesn't formally kick off until May 26, according to Google's program timeline, there are a few things that need to get sorted out first. If you have questions about how to do any of these things, don't be shy! :) Post to the http://groups.drupal.org/soc-2008 or ask in #drupal on irc.freenode.net, and we'll get you hooked up.

Project wiki page template

This year, we're experimenting with ways to make it easier for the general community to keep track of what's going on with Summer of Code. So to that end, this year all approved students will be asked to keep track of the pertinent details about their project in a central wiki page on this group. The following is a template for them to use to do this.

Project information

Project page on drupal.org: http://drupal.org/project/FOO

Current status: Describe briefly where your project is this week. Are you in the process of scoping? Are you working on a particular deliverable?

How can China be of services to Drupal -- practically?

We have been pondering about how to best evangelize China into the Drupal community -- and in droves.

After operating in China for two years, and despite of our best trying such as holding the Drupal BootCamp event in Beijing http://www.drupalchina.org/node/3638, our biggest challenge is the practicality of getting Chinese acquainted with Drupal -- BEFORE we can even talk about having them participate into the DROP program, let alone directly contribute into module or theme writing.

Drupal loves OpenSocial?

Hello there,

I'm a student Communication Multimedia Design - currently doing a graduation investigation and project about the "Integration of social networking sites in Drupal".

Investigation

My investigation brings me first to a technical question: which current (Drupal 5) modules give an answer to this question?

I did an investigation and found 19 contributed modules that make integration possible for content coming from a typical social networking site into Drupal.

  • Activity Stream
  • Advogato
  • Delicious
  • Digg this
  • Embedded Media Field

Support System Module

Drupal is very useful for many people in the sense that is reliable, easy to use. This makes Drupal a very good choice for organisations who are looking for a web presence. As of today the use of internet by small businesses(SME) is limited to giving information about their company to the outside world, which acts as a advertising tool.
I would like to take this further by enabling them to give support to their customers which will be of real value to the organisaions, saving their valuable time.

Igloo - Drupal 6 Social Network Distribution (i.e: Ning)

Revised Proposal has been posted based on feedbacks: http://groups.drupal.org/node/10468#comment-33863

Objective
To create a Drupal 6 Social Network Distribution similar to Ning.

Unlike Ning, the Drupal's opensource concept empowers users with freedom to customize, host and own their social networks while not confining network members behind walls with support of OpenID, Microformats, FOAF and OpenSocial (DataPortability in the future).

GSoC Project Idea: ODF support on Drupal

I see several sites who makes PDF version for download. It makes the world wide web so rich of PDF.
Why not ODT too, as an editable version?
I think it can spread the ODT format. If people see it, they will use it.

[Updated] Improve Jabber/XMPP implementation on Drupal 6

(Note: This proposal has been submitted)

// Idea Summary

The idea is to improve, and implement a feature-rich XMPP API (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) in Drupal 6. Such an API will allow communication between Drupal and other XMPP clients. This will give an alternative on how Drupal systems can notify users of changes/updates. Users might also remotely interact with Drupal, using IM. A generic API will also benefit the Drupal universe as other modules can hook into XMPP when needed.

SOC Proposal: Perfect Paper Passwords and possible Multifactor API

2008 Google Summer of Code Application: Steven King

Drupal.org Username:

verbal

Overview
I would like to work on a multi-factor authentication system for Drupal. I want to implement the Perfect-Paper-Passwords multi-factor authentication system created by Steve Gibson (www.grc.com/ppp) as a Drupal module. In creating this system I will also evaluate the feasibility of creating a multi-factor API so other multi-factor login systems will be easier to implement in the future.

Another GSoC proposal - AI Language Processing

Hello community

Since drupals' major work is manage text, it is a great opportunity for me to apply a large theory that I've learn processing text with computer. Let me explain you my idea.

Basically my idea is use Artificial intelligence to categorize text based on similarities, this mean that it will learn from previous text as examples.

This can be useful for suggest categories, tags or anything else to new text when it is written.
