A "chautauqua" for developing a Drupal application that tracks employee time off

I am developing my first module and decided that the application I'm building would make a good case study for learning a lot of aspects of Drupal (including cck, workflow and actions), and so I'm putting it here, with an eye towards posting how I've accomplished the various functionalities, soliciting input for how to approach certain aspects of the application (a few of which are stumping me), and finishing up with a demo and/or webcast of the finished product. I will contribute the module, too, once I figure out how to do that :-). Bottom line - we need learners AND experts in this "chautauqua" to make it a real learning experience. So please jump in and follow along, comment, ask questions, and provide expert opinion!

How to allow the edition of only certain fields of a node by links next to those fields?

Hello!

The problem is the following. I have a node with many fields and that node is supposed to be a wiki content. I am afraid that the number of fields might frighten some users while creating a new node or editing one. Many times users just want to edit a particular field and therefore showing the complete node edit page may be a bit overwhelming.

What I wanted was the following:
- on node create page, I just wanted the node-title to be inserted (and possibly one or two more fields);

Need help with views

I think my need is simple but after a whole lot of search i am unable to get it working - hence this post

i have one cck (*called movies_db) with movie_name (node title), movie_director, Movie_number, Movie_actor, Movie_Actress, movie_rating, etc ( few more fields);

Next i have another cck called Movieshow_schedule with two fields - one date and another (a node reference) to the above movie_name.

Now I want a view which shows the movie show schedule (based on node: 'movieshow_schedule') which lists, in tabular form
1. the date and with the date
2. lists its referred movie_name

Webform versus CCK

I'm looking to create a form that a user can submit DNS information with. I've attached a screenshot of a generic layout of a DNS form from another application to use as a guideline. The problem is the horizontal layout of multiple fields in a row. Just wondering if anyone else has tackled this before and if it's possible in either Webforms or using CCK to customize the layout. See screenshot for an example.

Dojo Lesson #13 - Custom CCK Fields Redux!

Start:
2007-01-23 03:00 - 05:00 Etc/GMT-8

This Sunday at 11am PDT / 2pm EDT / 8pm CET, Drupal Dojo regular Sam Tressler will take the teacher's position and walk through creating custom CCK fields. This is a replay of last week's lesson, which turned out to be an impromptu group collaboration on setting up a localhost sandbox. ;)

CCK, is the future and all, but how do we make fields do what we want them to? I mean, its no good to have an input field without validation and formatting options, is it? How does this stuff 'magically' show up in views?

Never fear, its all there, and we can go through it all step by step.

Check out the lesson plan wiki page, and join us on Sunday in the dojo!

The Drupal Dojo is a community group dedicated to spreading best-practices and helping developers who are new to the system get up to speed and become masters in their own right. We hold virtual lessons and produce practical developer documentation in both written and screencast form. If you're a newcomer looking for help in grokking the system or an old hand who's tired of being told to clone yourself, consider joining us in the Dojo!

Lesson #4 Class Notes wiki -- Module Mashups!

Contribution Module Rock Star Roundup! CCK, views, panels... oh my!

Today we will be seeing what we can do, creating rich content layouts with modules such as CCK, views, panels, and how to make use of some of the core modules, such as taxonomy. And as we shall see, you can use views within panels...

Comment: It would be helpful to have an abstract of what will be accomplished, or even a demo of the end results for those who get scared browsing half way down and seeing all that code.

First step is to install the relevant modules.

Dojo Lesson #4 -- Great Contrib Modules

Start:
2007-01-22 03:00 - 05:30 Etc/GMT-8

Drupal DojoNote: Video is compressing, will be up later tonight.

I'm back on to teach another Dojo Lesson this Sunday at 11am PST (2PM EST, 4PM Buenos Ares, 8PM Belgium/Hungary). Topic is TBA, but see the great wiki page Matt Koglin pulled together and let's start a comment thread on it.

I'm open to doing a more high-level beginner-friendly session after last week's dive into NodeAPI. I'm also open to doing a practical "how do I make a site do xyz" type lesson. Once it's decided I'll edit this event node to include the topic and we can collect pre-reading, etc, as per usual.

Join us in #drupal-dojo on IRC, and on skype #+99001110025448968. You can also see my screen here.

Two other points to note:

  • Greggles has stepped up in the IRC room to lead a session on how to use CVS to manage an official Drupal project. Awesome! He will be leading Lesson #5 on Sunday the 27th. [edit: see and edit the lesson plan wiki]
  • SamTressler has offered to set up a session at Drupal Camp NYC where the Dojo lesson will be projected and people can take part; an exciting real/virtual world crossover!
