WE MOVED! ALL FUTURE GSoC DISCUSSIONS TAKE PLACE @ https://groups.drupal.org/google-summer-code
Welcome potential Google Summer of Code 2010 students and mentors!
About (from the SoC site):
Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We have worked with several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 3,400 students and more than more than 3,000 mentors & co-mentors from nearly 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all.
This group is for posting and discussing GSoC project ideas, as well as for general conversation that relates to the SoC. You can also get help on the #drupal IRC channel on freenode (irc://irc.freenode.net/drupal).
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SUBMIT PROJECT IDEAS OR TO RE-SUBMIT IDEAS FROM LAST YEAR!
Drupal on Enterprise Service Bus - DoESB
I am hopping to solicit feedback and to find mentor(s).
Overview: Drupal on Enterprise Service Bus will provide a UI to an Enterprise Service Bus such as ActiveMQ or MuleESB or GlassFish and will provide Drupal access to said ESB without forking Drupal Core.
Description: Drupal is not a stand-a-lone player and as is popularity increases in business/enterprise applications including business intelligence, e-commerce, intranets and ERP so does the need for integrations. DoESB will help focus such "one-off" efforts to the assembly line of a common ESB with much lower entry barriers. The applicant is currently pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science, has participated in Drupal based website implementations, is a member of the EFF, FSF and IEEE, and is a true believer of the public commons importance.
Read moreBespin for Drupal - B4D
I am hopping to solicit feedback and to find mentor(s).
Overview: Bespin for Drupal - an integrated, web-based, collaborative code editor form Mozilla Labs.
Description: Bespin for Drupal could be yet another input method using the WYSIWYG API, but with real-time collaborative editing. B4D could also be implemented to allow Dash command line, file editing, version control, syntax highlighting, API access - a built-in IDE with multi-user editing (such as with Google Docs).
Bespin could be implemented in two ways, embedded or by implementing the Server API with Drupal. Embedded B4D would be beneficial, but with significantly less potential. Both methods may be delivered, so both are discussed. The applicant is currently pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science, has participated in Drupal based website implementations, is a member of the EFF, FSF and IEEE, and is a true believer of the public commons importance.

Read moreImage editor integration
Hello everyone!
I would like to propose the integration of an image editor into Drupal. The image editor I have in mind is PaintWeb, which is also an open source project.
The motivation for this project is based on the emerging popularity of HTML5 and advanced web applications. Drupal is a powerful CMS which should allow users to also edit images inside their browser, without having to use an offline tool for simple drawings / simple edits.
Read moreQueryPath Update to D7
I am proposing to update the QueryPath module to D7. I will also, by extension, update the database extension in QueryPath to use the new database API, add new features to QueryPath to bring it up to date with jQuery 1.4, and update the QueryPath example modules. All of the above changes will continue the awesomeness of the QueryPath module. I have been talking to Matt Butcher and have his full support on this proposal.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Read moreSemantic assisted Natural Language Processing for extracting information from Nodes
Overview:
There is so much content in the Internet that its availability becomes its own problem, we still need to manually extract information from each content. Sure there's a lot of ways this is being addressed like use of meta data, tags, web semantics, micro-format but it only yields data. As example, a news article has headline and title; its tagged and categorized. We used web semantic analysis and find Persons, places, events and etc. Still we dont know anything really about it, how does the mentioned persons related to the places and events. Where they on it or referring to it? How about answering "Is the article a good or bad news?" To whom is it good to and by what degree?

Remote entities
Remote entities
Overview:
The aim of the project is to create a system, based on services, which will enable to transparently use entities from a different site as local entities. I will base my system on Drupal 7, because the new APIs give me the required level of flexibility for the clean implementation. I will use the Entity API module to do easy CRUD on the entities.
Read moreUnified field manager
I think a central field management module would benefit many other modules. Currently CCK allows adding custom fields for a content type. It's not very easy to re-use these fields with a custom module.
For the same if a module could provide a central field manager, and other modules can utilise these fields by way of some API, that would be great.

Drupal Commerce Usability: Bulk Product Creation / Import Tools
Overview: Drupal Commerce is a fresh implementation of the Ubercart feature set on Drupal 7 using fieldable entities to the max and depending on Views and Rules. What a product is has been separated from how a product is displayed (see this thread for more details), and the attributes system has been completely redone to work through fields on product types and enforce unique SKUs for every variation of a product. While greatly improving the underlying data model, this adds to the complexity of listing products for sale, especially when closely related products need to be sold through the same display (i.e. multiple sizes of a particular t-shirt style). This project will take advantage of the field settings for fields on product types and Token patterns to create bulk product generation forms and enhancements to the Product Reference field and its Add to Cart form display formatters to present these products for sale.
Read moreProposal: refactoring Drawing API
Overview
the Drawing API is an API module that allows developers to define vector graphics in a structured array format (resembling the Forms API). It was aimed at bringing SVG display closer to developers, taking over the rendering part so that graphics can be created more easily.

Hey,
I am a pre-final year student in IIT Madras, Chennai, India. I have been working with Drupal for the last year or so. I have created and am the administrator for my Department website (www.biotech.iitm.ac.in) and the Industrial Consultancy site for IITM (www.icandsr.iitm.ac.in).
I propose to overhaul the search feature of Drupal 6 so that we can have searches for incorrectly spelt terms. The Leucene DidYouMean module does this, but I plan to make make additions in the core search module.
Read moreDate module rework
Hey all! I emailed KarenS about possible work on the date module, and the following is a summary of what we came up with. I'll post more details/respond to discussions if people think this is a viable proposal.
About Me: I am a current college sophomore concentrating in physics and math with a computer science secondary. I am an experienced Drupal developer, having worked with Development Seed for two years now in both Drupal 5 and 6. I have a lot of experience with the date module, as well as relevant areas such as Views 2, CCK, and FormAPI. I have submitted patches to many modules including date and views, the most relevant to this work being an outstanding one adding flexible granularity to the current dates: http://drupal.org/node/259308.
Overview: There are a number of areas KarenS and I discussed as possible options for a summer of work. The primary ones include refactoring the API to be more understandable, cleaner, and to use OO techniques where applicable. I think significant gains in simplicity and extensibility are possible here, which would be very useful for such an important module used in many other applications. Another is reimplementing the submodules in this light. A third is finishing flexible granularity and other additions on top of the API. All this will probably be done in the context of the update of Date module to Views 3 and Drupal 7.

An online test or education module
Hello everyone!
I'm from China and I have used Drupal and developed modules for 3 years. I'm adminitrator of our school's BBS and one department website using Drupal. Currently I am doing some work with Drupal for an online competition. The competition is just like http://www.hackthissite.org/. I find that there isn't any modules related to education or competition management, but I think Drupal is quite suited for the job and we cannot fall behind by other cms system. So I think we can develop such a module that can:
- add some test/challenge/homework/course for student members.
