This is a discussion and working group for anyone interested in implementing HTML5 markup and API's in Drupal. We are working on several projects to provide HTML5 support for Drupal 7, and pushing to get HTML5 native markup and form elements into Drupal 8 core.

Mobile Usability Testing Sprint - Facts & Findings

On the Friday of Drupalcon London we ran a Mobile Usability Testing Session on Drupal's admin interface.

We had a strong turnout, with lots of enthusiasm from the testers. We managed to test the UI on the following devices:

Nokia N900
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
HTC Sensation
Samsung galaxy s2
iPad 2
iPhone 4
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 3G

Presenting Media in Drupal - Dallas Drupal Days 2011 presentation

For those interested, I just completed a talk at the Dallas Drupal Days conference here in Dallas TX where I talked about presenting media in Drupal 7. I recorded this video so that anybody who did not attend can watch it. Core template conversion methodology - cart before the horse?

The way we have been approaching changes to core templates has, at least afaict, been a piecemeal affair - we change one or two templates at a time working through the various markup issues until such time as we have some broad consensus and ta da, here's our new template.

This bottom-up-esque methodology seems reasonable because we we are not overhauling the entire system at any one time and are just looking to adjust or tweak parts of it.

I think this has worked OK in the past, however I tend to think this methodology has a few drawbacks.

A 1-2 punch for progressive form enhancement

Hello everyone, sorry if you've seen this before but I just came across this today and it was new to me:

using the techniques described in this article: http://css-tricks.com/progressively-enhancing-html5-forms/ ... we could progressively enhance html5 form fields without needing to load extra javascript files that we won't need to use for all cases.

Even if the specific techniques outlined in the article aren't the way we'd want to do it, maybe some of these ideas are worth including?

Auto-post feeds to the @drupalhtml5 Twitter account?

Could the owner of the HTML5 twitter account setup TwitterFeed to auto-post anything from the following feeds:
1. http://drupal.org/project/issues/search/drupal/rss?issue_tags=html5 - any core issues tagged with 'html5'
2. http://groups.drupal.org/node/28440/feed - anything posted on the group page

Maybe we could use the Twitter account to promote more activity? I noticed it didn't post anything about today's meeting at all.

HTML5 versus HTML4: support, bugs and workarounds across all Drupal versions?

Is there any resource that details how the different "current" versions of Drupal (D6&7 plus D8) can support HTML5?

I'm thinking of a one-stop resource which looks at different versions of Drupal and their HTML5 compliance. Strictly speaking, we could split "compliance" up into three levels:

HTML5-blocking (bugs or severe whitelists prevent HTML5 support)
HTML5-agnostic (HTML5 support does not exist, but can be built without serious conflicts)
HTML5-promoting (it's more worth while to follow HTML5 than HTML4 - with maybe minor tweaks)

I know it is a long time coming, but I have just created the home base for the HTML5 media initiative. http://drupal.org/project/html5_media

This project has one goal. To bring a standardized, Open Source GPL front end media solution to Drupal core. This project is completely open and has no other intentions other than to provide a standard front end media solution that will benefit the entire Drupal community, so therefore, whoever would like to help in this initiative is welcome to contribute!

Design Initiative: Narrowing the use case - who are our users?

To scope this discussion - this is about our new core theme for Drupal 8 and who it will serve, and how they will use it.

Its not possible to design and build something that will suit everyone, so we have been working on narrowing it down to identify who might use our new core theme and what their needs might be.

I have expanded on this and tried to think about skill-sets, constraints, features and what type of sites might they be building.

How can we improve frontend sprints at Drupal events?

At DrupalCamp Ghent, we held a very small frontend BOF, with myself, Laurii, Emma.maria, and guest frontender Xano.

It quickly became a retrospective on the Friday sprints that took place at DrupalCon Amsterdam. The collective thoughts were not positive. It felt like we fell way short of our goals and potential for the Friday sprint. Drupalcon Friday sprints are about introducing people to sprinting and it feels like we failed badly at that.

Here were some of the problems:

Newbies did not get enough help
The few people helping the newbies did not get enough support

As part of the Drupal.org code sprint in Portland; Chris Ruppel, Joel Moore and myself have been discussing a new Bluecheese. A lean, tight, and admin friendly theme that lays out a framework for the future. One that would allow us to develop a mobile friendly, responsive design.

If you have development chops, designers and other contributors of this community need your help bringing designs to life.

Allow me to paint a picture of the need and skills required...

The task of creating content has been redesigned (http://groups.drupal.org/node/217434), and has reached a point of consensus. At this point, the design really needs to interactive to flush out how all of the various interactions will work (or don't). Additionally, once made interactive, we validate the direction by testing the prototype with end users.

(Let's create a Myth versus Fact document to answer reoccurring concerns about HTML5 and Drupal. Anyone can edit this document and provide answers. HEAVY rewriting is welcome at this stage!)

Myth: HTML5 is not done, we should wait until it's done before implementing it in Drupal.

Fact: Most of HTML5 is dividable in 3 different groups: "it just works", "degrades by default", and "some effort required". See http://mathiasbynens.be/notes/html5-levels for additional information.

At 1st we're starting to make cck widgets for every html5 elements.

We already have the number field in the html5_tools.module file and you can use that as a base for starting the other fields.

If you're interested in what new fields are available take a look at the elements module code, there is not support for email, number, url, color, and range.
