Introduction from the 909 - Interest in the Product Catalog Side of Things

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

First off, if "Introduction" based discussions are off-topic, I do apologize.

Im a San Berdoo Mountain user who is rather new to Drupal. Had looked at it off and on throughout the last year or so. Now I have a project that will be perfect for Drupal -- a company site with a non-buy, product catalog. I been looking around but there are so many modules it is overwhelming. Not sure where to start but I'll get the hang of it.

Anyhow, It will be a pleasure to meet all of you....er....looks outside at the snow Once my car is accessible

Welcome WebmistressM!

Sounds like you're in luck... This month we will be just starting to discuss the modules necessary to produce Sam's candy site. We'll also quickly review how to install a fresh copy of Drupal for anyone who need a refresher. As always, we welcome any and all questions related to all aspects of web design/development; not just Drupal stuff. We all look forward to meeting you!

Welcome! I'm not sure which

Welcome! I'm not sure which groups is closer to you - high desert or Temecula. perhaps neither, or both? Helior is one of a few folk that regularly make the trek out to LA Drupal meetups all the way from the high desert...

Temecula has a group just trying to get off the ground.

Also, as an FYI (because it was hard to miss the penguin...) LA Drupal is going to be hosting a table for the second year at SCALE 7x, in February. I'll be posting soon looking for volunteers to help with the booth.

Hello Thanks for giving me

Hello

Thanks for giving me an update on wht the High Desert is up to. Sounds like a great idea. I havent been down the back side of my mountain in a while.

As for Temecula, it is actually farther from me (about 1.5 hours away vs. 45 mins to Apple Valley). Does the high desert group always meet specifically at a McDonalds?

Goal: Drupal based Product Catalog

Yeah, our group has only met

Yeah, our group has only met at McDonalds so far. We aren't tied down to only meeting at McDonalds, they just offer a nice little room with a projector screen that is separate from the rest of the restaurant.

Our group consists of about 5 - 10 regulars, and we're hoping to grow the attendance this year. Sounds like you'll be coming down from Big Bear, so the Apple Valley location should work out well for you.

Our meetings are pretty informal and we talk about whatever anyone wants to talk about. Last month we talked a little about the theme system and theme overrides, touched on the Form API, played with Views2 a little, and we looked at a couple sites that members of the group built. It was good meeting.

We also sometimes have more formal presentations where the presenter prepares a Keynote, and we go through class room style presentation with questions at the end.

We'd love to have you come down, and we love to answer questions, so bring us the issues you're facing with Drupal and hopefully we can guide you in the right direction.

I actually havent started

I actually havent started with the project beyod simple basic Drupal experimentation. As you can see by the linked forum post, I was trying like mad to see if a book might have a good answer but it seems that most of the e-commerce ones cover use of Ubercart (which is more for a shopping cart rather than a non-buy product catalog).

At any rate, when is the next one ? I cant wait, to be honest, despite that the smell of McDonalds food makes me nauseous. Are any of the group members in the mountains? (Im actually not that close to Big bear but more on the west side of this mountain range in Crestline).

The meetings are generally

The meetings are generally held on the last Friday of the month. We will post an announcement on this site as soon as the date is confirmed with the hostess @ MD.

I always thought htye would be on a Saturday. Well, if it is on a Friday than Im not as close to the meeting since I work in Rancho. The 15N to apple valley will probably make me too late to attend. Hmm....gonna take creative logistics

Hey, WebmistressM! Good to see you here.

Just a quick note to address your original question (of sorts): The thing you want for a product catalog is Ubercart. It's really aces; I use it on http://store.tomgeller.com.

Once you get used to its administration, check out TopNotchThemes' <a href="http://www.topnotchthemes.com/handbook/download-quickstart-guides>guide to making Ubercart look good, which [plug alert] I wrote. :)

Ubercart came highly recommended months ago when I posted this. However, I decided not to use Ubercart so that i could gain more learning experience about more core modules such as CCK and Views. Sadly the project that I was working on got pulled out from under me so I am seeking a new project. No luck so far and sadly I think Drupal is one of those things I learn best by doing (Im a very visual design oriented person). Regardless, one idea I have for a self project is to base a fictional store on a friends' awesome site and since it is a site designed to accept Paypal for payment (no credit cards), Ubercart may indeed be perfect.
