Blip.tv is deleting our videos! Let's save them

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi everybody, I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that we have literally dozens and dozens of videos of presentations and lightning talks that were recorded at Drupal meetups and conferences throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area. Check them out:

   http://blip.tv/gladrupal

This video collection has had tens of thousands of views. We also have another hundred or so videos of recorded videos from meetups over the past year that just haven't been uploaded yet. I'm pretty sure we have more videos than any other Drupal user group!

The bad news? Blip.tv just sent us a friendly email:

Over the past year, Blip has been conducting an ongoing review of our content library. Starting in March, 2013 we began closing accounts that don’t meet our criteria of being the best in original web series or are not compliant with our Terms of Service. As part of this effort, your account will be removed on November 7, 2013. New uploads to your account have been disabled, effective immediately.

So, is anyone interested in saving our videos by getting together at our first-ever video sprint? The plan is to get together, upload videos to our new Vimeo channel, add some fun descriptions, and share some good stories, food and drinks.

Please post a comment below and let everyone know what time and what part of town works for you. Once we know when and where we're getting together, a separate event announcement will go out.

Help, and perhaps a high-bandwidth location

aguilty1's picture

I'll help with this effort. Do you know if we can transfer directly from Blip to Vimeo? Or does each video need to get downloaded onto a workstation, then uploaded onto Vimeo? If so, high bandwidth would help the transfer go faster.

If anyone is interested,we could find a location at UCLA to do the transfer. Bandwidth would be high, but parking is annoying and costly: $11.

Thanks, Gary! Would someone

Thanks, Gary!

Would someone like to second getting together at UCLA? Perhaps if people carpool, we can distribute the parking costs.

Do you know if we can transfer directly from Blip to Vimeo? Or does each video need to get downloaded onto a workstation, then uploaded onto Vimeo?

As far as I can tell the only way to batch upload to Vimeo is with either with FTP or via Dropbox. FTP would be ideal but that's a Vimeo Pro feature and the account we have is a month-to-month Plus account. I read that there's a desktop uploader but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I've been downloading the videos on Blip to a folder on our user group's VPS at SoftLayer and am at video 66 out of 125. I'm going to try hooking up that folder to a Dropbox mount to see if the videos will copy over that way, but for now I'm just trying to preserve them so that in a couple days they aren't deleted forever.

Our user group's Dropbox account isn't very big. I've upgraded it to Dropbox Pro so we can temporarily store everything in one place for this video sprint.

I'm glad to second Gary's

christefano's picture

I'm glad to second Gary's offer to have the video sprint at UCLA. Now is when we figure out the hardest part. When will we be doing this?

Gary has offered this upcoming Monday, November 11th, which is a holiday. Other possibilities are Sunday, November 10th, or after November 17th.

Module Bootcamp and C

pkosenko's picture

Am I wrong that this upcoming Monday 11/11 is module bootcamp?

Also, 11/9 and 11/10 (the weekend) are SoCal Codecamp at USC.

So after that would make more sense to me. I'd be gone pretty much all day on Saturday and Sunday.

On the other hand, I don't need to be there, I suppose, even though UCLA is closer to me than most things.

No, you're absolutely right.

christefano's picture

No, you're absolutely right. The next Module Development Boot Camp session is on Monday, November 11th.

In general, what works best for you, days, nights or weekends?

After next monday

pkosenko's picture

I think anytime next week after Monday, with the exception of Tuesday night, which is the regular westside Drupal meetup (7:00 p.m. at Stauffer). Sunday 11/17 I at 5:00 p.m. in Santa Monica I have a philosophy discussion group. So Tuesday before 3:00, then Wednesday morning through Sunday at about 3:00. Sometimes I play guitar at an open mic on Friday evening, but I am guessing that you won't be choosing that slot, and if you did, I could always play the following week.

Some people have even more complicated schedules than I do. Actually, mine is usually more busy than it is.

How about Saturday, November

christefano's picture

How about Saturday, November 23rd?

Oh, someone wrote to me while

christefano's picture

Oh, someone wrote to me while Drupal.org was down for maintenance and logins were disabled and suggested using YouTube. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Using YouTube might help get our videos more exposure in Google services and search results, but I don't think YouTube allows batch uploading (unless we all log in simultaneously and upload from our browsers or mobile apps, which I haven't tried).

YouTube uploads

mfuller526's picture

Several could login to the YouTube channel once established and upload, but it is a slow process having nothing to do with bandwidth but rather YouTube rendering. I've uploaded about eighty 720p (1280 x 720px) H.264 files, about thirty minutes duration, 4GB file size using Time Warner Cable. Upload speed 2.12Mbps, upload time three hours.

Of course shorter durations and/or lower resolutions if they were used would be faster but I suggest higher res for future productions for fullscreen, Retina and TV display clarity. If our files are in DropBox or some depository they could easily be assigned along with titling and metadata.

Thanks for this info,

christefano's picture

Thanks for this info, Michael!

Is there anyone else in favor of using YouTube instead of Vimeo? I see several advantages that YouTube has over Vimeo, including cost.

One thing in favor of Vimeo is that their magic Dropbox uploader thingie is pretty much a "set it and forget it" feature. When files appear in a specified folder, they're automagically copied over to Vimeo. Here's their help page about it:

   https://vimeo.com/help/faq/uploading-to-vimeo/uploading-from-dropbox#how...

As far as I know, we don't

christefano's picture

As far as I know, we don't have many (if any) high res videos of presentations. Presenters at our meetups are usually asked to lower their screen resolution in order to make the files smaller and easier to work with.

This should probably be added to the "presentation best practices" that Miguel mentioned:

More videos to transcode

christefano's picture

I just read over our "Video How-to and Checklist" wiki page and it's a good guide for how we'll be converting and uploading videos during the video sprint:

   https://groups.drupal.org/node/269563

Videos that need to be converted from ARF to MP4 include presentations on Evergage, Behat real world examples, SDG&E's case study on their responsive Drupal website, an introduction to the DevShop instant development environment, an intro to cache warming, a case study on Paramount's webmaster asset catalog, etc., etc.

We also have Sebastian Chedal's presentation on the GLADCamp website, Oliver Seldman's presentation on Stage File Proxy, Ryan Szrama's talk on Relify for Drupal Commerce, Matt Wrather's presentation on Views style plugins, and Chris Stattuck's talk on building Build a Module.com.

Follow-up

mfuller526's picture

Looks like you're set on Vimeo. FYI YouTube doesn't have a Dropbox connection, however if you have several videos they can all be selected and uploaded by YouTube in the video manager. They are rendered one by one.

Saturday Nov. 23

pkosenko's picture

Sounds okay to me. I can't see any other events listed for that day. My question would be whether or not I am going to be of any help converting videos if I don't have the proper software to do so. Posting things and writing (or transferring) written content to web sites I presume anyone can do if they are given the proper access.

Video sprint update and summary

christefano's picture

Yes, you got it. Our video sprint will have a couple different areas where anyone can jump in and help, from technical tasks, content editing tasks and general support.

1. Being part of a team!
The most important thing in my book is to have fun whenever we get together. Much of the learning, teaching, rabble rousing and any successes we'll experience will be because we're working together as a team, helping one another and accomplishing something that we wouldn't be able to do alone or individually.

2. Bring some food and drinks

This is very much a community event, and unless we have a corporate sponsor then I suggest we bring food to share potluck-style. We'll need to check with our venue first, of course, to see if food is allowed where we'll be located.

If anyone would like to sponsor beverages and / or food for our group at this event, we'll be incredibly grateful and can even mention you or your company name in the video descriptions.

3. Transcoding videos
Anyone with Windows (or a virtual machine running Windows) can help transcode the large backlog of WebEx videos that we have. This is by using Cisco's network recording player software mentioned on our video how-to page:

   Video How-to and Checklist
   https://groups.drupal.org/node/269563#recording

4. Uploading videos
We're still not 100% decided on which video provider we'll be uploading our videos to. We can definitely talk more about our options if anyone recommends them or if another person seconds mfuller's recommendation to use YouTube:

   https://groups.drupal.org/node/358663#comment-984113

If we end up using Vimeo, then for the most part our videos can be uploaded to Dropbox and then automatically transferred to Vimeo via their Dropbox magic uploader thingie.

5. Naming and labeling videos
Once videos are uploaded to Vimeo (or YouTube, or wherever), we'll add helpful descriptions, tags, etc. to the video pages.

Then we'll need to update the original meetup announcement related to the event where that video was recorded. For example, the Downtown Drupal meetup where Steve & Stacey Rifkin presented on Hard Cards will need to be updated with a link to the new video page:

Hard Cards Case Study: Is Drupal for Beginners?
   https://groups.drupal.org/node/241483

This is what comes to mind at the moment… what's missing?

Forgot to ask

pkosenko's picture

This is going to be at UCLA? Where at UCLA? The library?

Yes, that's the current plan.

christefano's picture

Yes, that's the current plan. Gary mentioned that he will be reserving a space on campus for this event. Please note that the exact time and location is tentative until you hear otherwise. :)

Sat., Nov. 23, noon-4PM, UCLA

aguilty1's picture

I got a confirmation for one space at UCLA for the video sprint, but am still waiting to hear about the Research Commons in the Young Research Library. I will confirm the specific location on campus in a couple of days.

If you want to participate but don't have a computer available to bring with you, I can probably borrow one. Please let me know by Nov. 21 if you need a laptop.

In any case, we can definitely plan on a Saturday afternoon video sprint on Nov. 23. I will drive from Silverlake, and would be happy to carpool.

Let's do it!

Saturday NOv. 23

pkosenko's picture

I have been hanging at codecamp and haven't checked in for a couple days. I see that things are developing rapidly. There is one possible glitch. I am waiting to hear about the memorial for a UCLA art professor who died a couple weeks ago. Hopefully it will be next weekend rather than during the video session. But other than that, I plan on being there.

Location confirmed: Young Research Library@UCLA

aguilty1's picture

I received confirmation for a space in the Research Commons at the Young Research Library at UCLA:
* Library Web Site
* Google Maps

Date and time: Saturday, November 23,noon-4:00.

The Research Commons is on the 1st floor. When you enter the building, walk toward the back past the cafe, and turn left. We'll be in the space near the collaboration pods, or we'll be in one or two of the pods. (You'll know what I'm talking about as soon as you see the pods.)

Thanks, Gary! I posted the

Do you have any suggestions for parking?

Exaltation of Larks is happy to provide food and drinks to help keep everyone's energy up at this event. I hope that everyone interested in attending signs up so that we have an idea of the headcount:

I have been there before with Chris Cabrera. Put up a Drupal sign, in case I don't recognize everyone in the group?
