| Video: Hard Cards Case Study: Is Drupal for Beginners? http://blip.tv/episode/6294845 |
The next general Downtown Los Angeles Drupal meetup is on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 and will be at Droplabs, your FREE Drupal event and coworking space in Downtown Los Angeles. Those interested in attending this meetup remotely are welcome to join us via WebEx.
Featured presentations at this meetup include a case study by Steve Rifkin (@steverifkin) and Stacey Rifkin (@HardCards) on the Hard Cards marketing and e-commerce website, which uses Drupal, Ubercart, terrific design and IA, and custom theming to bring it all together. The presentation will focus on administering a Drupal site from a beginner's stand point and both the positive and negative experiences that come with that.
What are Hard Cards, you ask? In short, they're hysterical, 100% recycled greeting cards that will make you pee in your pants.
Thank You to Our Sponsors!
The projector, raffle prizes and video conferencing support for this event are being provided by Exaltation of Larks, a Drupal strategy, consulting, development and training company with a team of Drupal experts in Los Angeles. We create fun websites, mobile apps, virtual worlds and e-commerce sites. Follow us at @LarksLA to learn more about our Drupal services and upcoming trainings.
Agenda
Our meetups follow a basic format and start off with Drupal news and announcements, local job announcements, raffle prizes and full-length presentations. As always, we'll also have community Q&A, during which time anyone in attendance can ask questions, divine answers from the crowd and give brief, 5-10 minute-long presentations known as lightning talks.
We'll finish off the night with more networking and a Drupal After Dark at 9:00pm.
For any changes to our agenda for the evening, stay tuned to this meetup announcement or click the Sign up button below (or both!) to be notified when the agenda has been updated.

Join us on WebEx, Twitter and IRC!
This meetup and its featured presentation will be broadcasted via WebEx, courtesy of Exaltation of Larks. WebEx works in your browser, whether you use Linux, Windows or Mac OS X.
To join the meeting, click the Sign up button below to receive the meeting URL and password (a Drupal.org account is required).
During the meetup, several of us will be in the regional #drupal-la channel on IRC and all are welcome to join us. The event organizers will also be monitoring Twitter for feedback and questions that mention @DowntownDrupal.
Users Helping Users
The meetup begins earlier than usual at 6:00pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal.
Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bona fide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!
Breakout Sessions
We have several spaces available for breakout sessions at 7:00pm. This is an opportunity for a open, multi-track format where we break into groups and discuss a variety of topics.
Each breakout session is led by a volunteer who picks the topic, picks the space and can optionally report back to the larger group in the form of an announcement or lightning talk.
To propose a breakout session, please arrive early and talk with one of the organizers or post a comment below.

Drupal After Dark
Even if you can't make it to the meetup, you're welcome to join us for a Drupal After Dark. After we wrap up the meeting and clean up, a group of us will go to a nearby restaurant or pub. One time we had beers and a bonfire and were serenaded by Skrillex, who was rehearsing next door for the Mothership tour.
We've also gone to a variety of other locations, including Barbara's at The Brewery (at 620 Moulton Ave., just a 5 minute walk away) and Carnitas Michoacan (on 1901 N. Broadway, just a 5 minute drive away).

Exaltation of Larks would
Exaltation of Larks would like to add an additional raffle prize to the pot: a free seat at one of our upcoming classes at DrupalCamp LA! These are normally $499 and are priced at 60% off for attendees at DrupalCamp LA.
The raffle prize winner can choose between a seat at either Drupal for Developers, which is designed for those with a previous development background but are new to Drupal; or Drupal Best Practices, which is an intermediate to advanced class to help take Drupal developers to the next level.
If any other meetup organizers in Southern California would like to have a free seat to raffle at their meetups leading up to DrupalCamp LA, please let us know at http://www.larks.la/contact and we'll hook you up.

Thanks Lee (& Exaltation of Larks!), that's an awesome offer for a raffle prize!
I'll make sure to spread the word as that's a pretty nice gift for attendees of the meetup.

If there's any interest and
If there's any interest and free time in the schedule, I can give a brief preview of a presentation I've proposed for this year's DrupalCamp LA:
Drupal Front-end Performance and Scalability
http://2012.drupalcampla.com/sessions/drupal-front-end-performance-and-s...
This is designed to compliment the Drupal Backend Performance and Scalability talk by BTMash, who in the past has done both presentations at DrupalCamp LA.
Normally I'd save this for the High Performance Drupal meetup, but I could use an opportunity to practice this and get any feedback before the conference.
This is shaping up to be a
This is shaping up to be a very good meetup (already!) w/Stevenator & Stacenator's (that's one awesome nick!) presentation & now your offer for a preview of the Drupal Front-End Performance preso you'll be doing at DCLA 2012. I'd love to see this as I've always really enjoyed Ashok's (BTMash) presentations on back & front-end performance.
Moreso than that, though, meetups are great venues to practice presentations that will be given on larger scales. This is something that we, as organizers, always encourage of attendees & other presenters: practice on us, we'll be gentle. ;)
Long story short, +1.

mrjeeves and I were talking
mrjeeves and I were talking about the format for this meetup and we think we've found a way to shorten the meetup by 15-20 minutes, if not slightly more.
Does this sound like something anyone else is interested in? Are there folks who feel strongly about sticking with the current format and finishing up at 9pm?
If we get through our agenda early, say around 8:45pm, then there's a good chance we can get to Barbara's before their kitchen closes at 9pm.
How do you propose the meetup
How do you propose the meetup will be shortened?

Rather than have a long
Rather than have a long stream of news and announcements at the beginning of the meetup, we're thinking of simply printing them out and talking about them in the brief gaps between the other parts of the meetup, e.g. presentations, breakout sessions, lightning talks, raffle prizes, etc.
How does that sound to everyone?
I like this idea you &
I like this idea you & mrjeeves have thought up of, Christefano! There's always time to fill when presenters are setting up, etc. We've already started being more efficient in this way by doing the raffle prize(s) during these times so this makes us more so.
However, I propose that we save some trees. We never know how many exactly will show up so we might be wasteful in over-printing. So while I like the idea, in general, I propose we post them here in the comments prior to the meetup. This way, everyone has access to them (thanks to Droplabs' wi-fi) all while being a bit more green. :)
What does everyone think?

Overprinting isn't usually a
Overprinting isn't usually a problem since extra copies can always be handed out at nearby meetups.
Saving trees and cutting down on paper waste sounds great, but I'd really like to give this idea a try until we have our announcements on a monster display that's sitting a desk or mounted on the wall for everyone to see.
Say, does anyone have a monster display that they'd like to donate to Droplabs?
As somone who's always
As somone who's always thinking of ways to be more green, I had to ask. ;)
But you know me, I'm down to try anything especially where we can be more efficient. Us getting over to Barbara's before they close the kitchen is GREAT since I've heard from several people that it's a bummer when we don't. Let's try it!
Thanks to you, Christefano, & mrjeeves for coming up with this.

A venue for Drupal Design
A venue for Drupal Design Camp LA 2012, our 3-day design, theming and usability conference in October, 2012, has been selected. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/236858 for more about our site visit to the Hollywood venue and our planning wiki at http://groups.drupal.org/node/196533 for immediate next steps. We'll also be discussing those next steps briefly at this meetup on July 17th.

Sorry for the long time it took to get to this. The WebEx software for transcoding ARF files to MP4 is Windows-only and I hadn't gotten around to rebuilding my Windows machine until this weekend.
