Barn Raising - Time Banking in LA?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi Everyone,

This is something I've wanted to do with Drupal for years, and I'd like to see how the community feels about it.

Have you ever had an idea for a project, but didn't have the hours to really get it started? Do you know of a good cause that could use a good website? Have you ever made some unfortunate decisions and needed to get your ass pulled out of the fire?

Have a barn raising! Another way of thinking of this is time-banking. Invite the community, be prepared to feed those who show up, perhaps plan something nice for the evening, and get the help you need.

Make it a social event as well as a coding event, and you might be surprised at how many people will come out of the woodwork to help. I've seen this work for all kinds of skills on the East coast.

With the more formal version, hours volunteered are kept track of and drawn from. If someone helps you out with your project, you don't return the favor to the person, you return the favor to the timebank - to schedule projects.

In a less formal version, hours aren't kept track of, but each barn raising is fun enough to draw good folks.

I'm open to your ideas on how this might work.

We've got a great community with a lot of talent, and the potential to create substantial wealth in different forms. I bet everyone has an idea stuck on the back burner.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks…

Cool Idea

I like this idea. My sense is that in order for it to work well, there'd need to be very clear, discrete, relatively small chunks which could be allocated to each programmer or team. It would also need to be a situation where things were sufficiently standard so that no significant onboarding was needed. If those conditions aren't met, my guess is that it'd be very difficult to achieve much in a single day. Of course, if one just knocked off all the items which met those criteria, it'd probably move things a whole lot closer to completion, even if there was stuff left undone.

Yeah, I think this sounds

Yeah, I think this sounds kinda cool. I am currently in said rear-end-stuck-in-fire situation - but it's not a Drupal project :(

I just second Sid's comments on making it manageable. I mean, you could also just write up the background info so people could get up to speed by reading. Often this is enough to get the gist of the task, especially for coders who can understand other people's code.

Anyway, umm...+1.

Miami Drupal is having a barnraising and I think we can learn a lot from it:

Maybe we can have a barnraising discussion at one of the upcoming LA Drupal meetups and see what ideas come up. What do you think?

World wide Programmer timebank

KMJones's picture

Hey all,

It seems to me that instead of a gathering as the focus, it should be the timebank of programmers that is always populated with requests and offers. I see this as a non-local timebank. Most timebanks are local on a geographic level, but they are about community not locale. Wiz, above could benefit from outside programming knowledge, that may not be found here or in his network of present reach. Even with such skills available, sometimes the rates requested make assistance accessible.

In our timebank and many around the world, there are real Barnraising events meant to build community spirit and participation. This would be no different.

I am just curious about levels of interest in this concept as I know there is great need in this particular niche of todays economy. http://battenkill.timebanks.org is the site for Battenkill Time Traders, a timebank my mother and some friends have recently started. But without technical assistance readily available, a lot of the charitable type folks are confused about how to work the systems and therefor are fearful about moving forward into what may become very demanding and costly situations when growth starts to occur.

I am interested in any thought from this community on this concept.
Thank you for your time.

Barn Raising

The Arroyo SECO Time Bank has a garden group that does monthly barn raisings. Each month a group of people go to a member's house and irrigate, mulch and plant. They have music and food and it's a great way for people to get their needs met and build relationships. Members earn time credits for participating and pay themselves out of the "Garden Group" account. The barn raising idea can be applied to any need, not just gardening.

Since this discussion started

Since this discussion started last year, we've had 2 barn raisings at Droplabs in Los Angeles and another one is coming up later this month:

Barn Raising and Code Sprint for the Echo Park Time Bank on April 28, 2012
   http://groups.drupal.org/node/224719

There's something for everyone at this two-day event and everyone in the time banking and Drupal communities is welcome to attend either or both days. We'll be gathered online if anyone wants to join us remotely.
