This is a special interest group dedicated to improving and expanding the Drupal theme system including theme functions and templates, CSS, markup, and how contrib modules add in their functions, CSS, and markup.
for example, we'll take stock of the location and number of CSS files and discuss if the architecture can be improved through emerging frameworks like Object Oriented CSS.
We will consider the questions "What do themers need from Core in terms of CSS? Module developers? SEO specialists?" and "What's new in CSS? What does Drupal support? What's the roadmap for CSS support?"
D7 Theme Docs
Can anyone help out on D7 Theme docs? There is a big need for help there, and it's an area I am totally clueless about. 2 issues on my radar:
- http://drupal.org/node/755826 (re: core theme section of handbook)
- http://drupal.org/node/740194 (re: updating theme guide)
I think it needs a lot of love, so if anyone can adopt these and help out, that'd be fantastic!

Last updated by EvanDonovan on Wed, 2011-09-07 12:22
In response to Core theme selection and development process. The vision here is to outline the selection process and requirements for the next core theme which we hope will be added to Drupal 8.
During Drupal 7 cycle there were many issues surrounding the selection process and in D8 we would like the see the selection centered principally on the design and not the end built theme (as it was in D7).
Underlying Principles
- Choose the next theme based on the design (before the theme is built).
Drupal Playday : October 16th
Our Playdays are at the Macon Library in Bed-Stuy. Just meet up at the library, find a place and start playing away! I have talked to the library and we can pretty much take over the benches my the fireplace (yes, a real fireplace) where there are ALOT of outlets.
The Macon Library is very noise friendly - so don't think you can't talk or have a discussion.
Here are the details:

Brooklyn, NY 11233-1003
- Take the A Train (sounds like a song, doesn't it?) to the UTICA Ave stop in Bkyn.
CSS Sprite-based Navigation
I'm working on a theme for a client who's requested a navigation menu which would be best handled with sprite-based rollovers. I've deployed several Drupal sites and have built many sprite-based navigation menus, but I haven't yet brought these two particular skills together; it seems as if it would be an arduous and difficult process (for me, at least) to do this in Drupal, considering how it creates and populates its menus.
Read moreShortening HTML id's and classes automatically in order to reduce kb of document and improve loading speed
When viewing Drupal HTML, one notices that the id's and classes on a HTML element can be at times numerous and large. Some of the tags are quite long as well. While clear tags can make for excellent readibility, and ease of design; they are extra bytes which slow down the passing of data, and add kb to the bandwidth.
What about automatically renaming and storing HTML elements and equal CSS tags in letter and number combinations?
For example, for illustration purposes:
<
div class="block block-block ">
<
div class="block-inner clear-block">

Apologies in advance for this crossposting to 11 groups. I recently started an issue to help us get to know each other better: Add field for "Memberships in Associations, Societies, and Other Professional Organizations" to User Profile. The initial response was, "Don't see why not, but let's hear more support before we do." So this is an appeal to read the issue and consider giving it your support.

Read moreGetting Menu_Id for a Menu-Block placed in a Region of a Theme
Hello!
This may be OT here - in case it is, maybe you can point me to the right place to post this.
I'm working on a theme for a non-profit website. I've been googling for a whole day without finding a solution.
I want to achieve the following:
Menu-Blocks that are placed in a certain region of my theme need to be processed to change their markup. Processing is not hard to do. But how can I get the following info from drupal:
- Is there a Block containing a Menu in a certain region?
- If so, what is the menu_id of this menu, so that my theme can process the menu tree?
Active trails between two different menus
What I have:
A primary menu (one level depth) at the top of the page.
Some secondary menus to the right, that changes depending on primary links (controlled via Visibility).
What I need:
Primary links to stay active when secondary links activated.
You can see the project I'm working on at nexos
I'm a graphic designer, trying to evolve to serious web design with Drupal, and think I accomplished the theme task very well, but this challenge of active trails...
Read moreProblems with custom preprocessing function and template file from the views module
hi,
I know the title doesn't say clearly what this discussion is all about but it's not easy to explain what I'm trying now for more than 5 hours (!!!) without any useful result :-(
Ok, let me explain:
I'm building a community-page. On each user-profile people will see - among other things - a view called "list_groups" (created with the views module) which lists all groups a user has joined. It's a normal HTML list which contains the node titles as links.
Read moreIntro Theming Workshops
Wish you could learn about theming real-time at 2AM or 2PM? Now you can! In a few short weeks I'm offering my very popular Intro to Theming Drupal workshop as a webinar in FOUR completely different time zones.
Learn how to:
- Build a Drupal theme from scratch.
- Choose the best starter theme for your projects so that you never have to build a Drupal theme from scratch.
- Divide (Photoshop) design files into the separate tpl.php files that make up a Drupal theme.
- Find and install awesome helper modules to make fancy rotating banners and drop down menus.
This course is for folks who know how to make a Drupal Web site but are tired of their sites always looking like crap.

Hello theme designers/developers/users.
I would like to ask if anyone is interested in contributing to discussions about a new free Drupal theme. It is similar to some projects for getting new themes in core but instead of a community-designed theme directly for core (like Bartik) I think it would be better to just have it in contrib.
If you are interested please check out this blog post: http://www.sooperthemes.com/drupal-blog/project-politika-help-design-fre...
Thanks!

Don't theme yourself into a corner. We built Fusion after years of feedback from designers, site builders, clients, and developers. It's a powerful and supported base theme, with layout and style configuration options built in that you (or your clients) can control through Drupal's UI using the Skinr module. Based on a simplified 960px or fluid 12 or 16-column grid, you can easily define your own custom grid if needed.

It's time for the next round of Design to Theme workshops. The topics covered in these workshops solve the hotspots of frustration for designers and novice themers:
- Design to Theme -- learn how to convert a "Photoshop" file to a Drupal theme. Photoshop not required. Sample screenshots will use the free software tool GiMP. Starts May 11.
- Advanced Layout Techniques -- if you've never want to write another line of PHP and you want to deploy advanced layouts for your themes this course is designed for you. Starts May 12.
Accessibility review of Bartik
Most of you know that a couple of new themes are proposed for Drupal 7 core - at the moment the only real contender at this stage is Bartik and we have a deadline looming on the 17th May.
Right now we really need some help in the issue queue not least of which is a comprehensive accessibility review of work-to-date and ongoing as there are many changes to come.

I posted a feature request: Field Type Template Suggestions to allow us to have #field_type template suggestion and preprocess functions in core.
At the moment you cannot override something like all taxonomy reference fields or all image fields, you are limited to field_name, bundle and field_name__bundle which are all groovy but not the raw down-low grunt needed when you want to simply override all fields of a particular type.

something i feel that drupal at this time is seriously lacking is interactive flash based themes.
a lot of people think that integrating flash with drupal is a no-go mainly because drupal is a php webapp...and flash is well.. a designers tool.
But if you can mash flex, actionscript 3.0, AMFPHP[a remote gateway specifically for flash and ,[ click here ] and the drupal services API. it is very well possible to envision a theme engine that allows users to create amazing flash sites with drupal.
