Design for Drupal is about bringing the community of designers together to be a part of the Drupal community. It’s about enabling designers and themers to do great stuff, coordinate efforts, come up with crazy ideas, and build a movement to make Drupal beautiful.

D4D Boston D8 Design Tennis
Notes from the first session of D8 Design Tennis at D4D Boston 2011:
Administration/UI/Functionality
- the right tabs should go away
- action items (like 'add content') should be prominent, under content page, global problem
- don't call Navigation "Navigation" (main menu vs. admin menu)
- basic setup instructions
- overlay should go away/be optional
- should the d7 toolbar be redesigned? I say yes!
- drop-downs on admin menu
- wireframe: permissions page
- menu bar w/ drop-downs (admin)
- menu page: I keep clicking 'edit menu' to edit but it resides under 'list links'
Design Initiative: How to measure reputation?
One thing that's been on my mind ever since the inception of the Design Initiative is some form of reputation system for design.drupal.org. If we can make this fly I'd be hugely in favor of it, and to that end I've put together a basic model of what this could look like (including an implementation), I'll get to that shortly, first I want to look briefly at what exists in Drupal ecosystem already - well, at least what I know of.

Anyone spotted the demo for the Twenty Eleven theme for Wordpress 3.2 - http://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com
I think its worth us tearing this apart and looking at the ideas they have bought in, I've only played with it briefly and its pretty nice actually. That said my initial impression was not so favorable (omg this is lame), however the more I play around with and uncover its various features the more I like it.

Design Initiative: Example Site for Designers - Brief
As part of our "Designers Toolkit" we are going to put up an example site to show all of Drupal cores front end output. This is to show designers what Drupal is and what it can do. I've been jamming some ideas and come up with simple site brief for this and wanted to open this up for public discussion befor we move ahead and actually build this.

Principles are important. They ensure consistent and fair decision making and they set objectives for us all to work towards. Most of all, they keep us honest.
We've been looking at establishing a set of principles that encapsulate our intentions in this initiative and give designers a strong story of Drupal. It would be great to get some feedback on the principles we have been working on.

The Design Initiative has three main goals - build a new core theme, build a new collaboration site for designers, and community outreach. The new core theme initiative is well under way and we're tantalizingly close to design.drupal.org becoming a reality. What we need to do now is step up a gear and start thinking about outreach.
Read moreWhat is 'Device Context'?
Context can mean many things, especially in Drupal. What I want to talk about is what context relates too from a device perspective.
Broadly I think this equates too:
It is device capabilities and constraints plus the fact that mobile devices are with you anywhere and everywhere.Luke Wroblewski
How does the ambiguous location of the user affect their browsing experience? Which device capabilities are going to affect how they view and use the site?

A big part of any user experience is usability. It's the first step toward an engaging and seamless experience.
There are three key areas that will be the focus of the formal mobile usability tests:
- Navigation
- Readability
- User Input
Currently Drupal's admin interface fails one and two almost instantly on small and touch screens. All three need a wide range of tests before we can confidently address these issues. I'd like it if people could weigh in based on previous experience.
I'll be posting more about the usability tests soon.

After going to DC Chicago I was inspired to join the Drupal Association, but could not be moved to include its ugly seal on my site.
Come on designers. You know what I mean. We can do better than this.
That said, I have contributed this unofficial logo exploration:
