Internationalization

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This group works on internationalization issues, like making it possible to translate menus, nodes and taxonomies in Drupal. This includes everything from process and workflows, to actual code issues or optimizations required. The Translations group is where to go if you are working on translating Drupal core or contrib modules.

translating Dates

I am wondering how I can translate the date fields and whether there is an easy way to do it without having to write hooks modify preprocess_node. I want to be able to add custom date format, possibly rtl such as Hebrew and Arabic, but i18n does not provide this.
Do I have to build custom hook?
Also, I tried to translate some of theme strings stored in variable such as the line (submitted by author on date ) . used I18N and searched for the string under interface transaltion with no success. are these bugs ? or am I approaching it the wrong way?
Thanks in advance

Hide the active language in Language Switcher block in Drupal 7

I'd like to have the language switcher block in core Drupal 7 hide the active language. (ie: If you're reading the English page, don't display a link to the English page.)

I've come across this solution for Drupal 6, which seems hefty for a seemingly trivial task (and doesn't work in D7):
http://drupal.org/node/909418

I'm new to Drupal, and I am having difficulties knowing where to start.

language negotiation - history and re-thinking

We have multiple domains, all allowing multiple languages, each with a different default language, and all sharing some content.

We're currently trying to deal with the following problem scenario:

We have a U.S. site with English as the default language.

We have a France site with French as the default language.

We have a Spain site with Spanish as the default language.

We create a language neutral node on the U.S. site, and we allow that node to be displayed on the French site and the Spanish site. No problem.

$title is not translated anymore if I use views

Ok, this hard to explain.

I build up a new site with a whole bunch of modules. The site is multilingual, german is default and the second language is english. I use a taxonomy vocabulary and all is working fine so far. E.g, content, taxonomy terms, menus and so on, are all shown in the right actual language (after translating them via the translate interface).

But, as soon as I enable the taxonomy_term default view, the taxonomy terms don't get translated anymore. All taxonomy terms are shown in the default language, which is german, even if the actual language is switched to english.

How to get one menu per language?

Hello.

I use Drupal 7.0 and can't find out how to get one menu per language. According to the Structure Guide, in Administration → Structure → Content types, for articles and basic pages I went to Edit → Publishing options → Multilingual support, and chose "Enabled, with translation". But menus are not a "content type" and I couldn't find out how to enable multilanguage support for menus.

Creating Right-To-Left language content in a LTR setup

I'm working to add support for content in right-to-left languages (arabic, hebrew, farsi etc) on my English interfaced site. Displaying the content works fine, due to some custom code, but when creating new content the input boxes (title, body etc) are LTR, even though I select the corresponding language in the language selection box. How can I correct this? Hooking form_alter?

CSS Handling in a Multilingual Site

Hello there,
I apologize if this topic has already been discussed but I was unable to find what I am looking for.
I am wondering what would be the best way to implement CSS in multilingual site. I noticed some developers use classes appended by i18n module. Others switch CSS based on the language attribute. I am kind of interested in switching the CSS for every language, not only LTR and RTL. What are the pros/cons of each scenario? And How would you approach it?

Cheers

i18n module with D7

I I tested the i18n module with D7 and it is not working properly. It does not separate the content based on the language. So on the front page, regardless of the user language selection, the content that is displayed is mixed. Now there is a module called language switcher that enables drupal 7 to separate the content based on the language but it has side effects on the content administration section. Say you are on the English front page, then you click on content -> filter by language (other than English) -> the result would: "no content available".

Any thoughts?

contrib module developer docs

I'm updating a contrib module to be i18n-compatible, and am finding the documentation thin on the ground, mostly a few notes here: http://drupal.org/node/313262

Digging through the code it appears that aside from node content, the main i18n support is for drupal variables. So, for a module to be compatible we need to make sure that it stores its data in drupal variables. Is this correct? The module I'm working with uses a custom table instead so I figure that switching to drupal variables is probably the best way to add i18n support.

Multilingual D7 Session for DrupalCon Chicago 2011

Support for multilingual D7 is not ready yet, but it certainly be until DrupalCon Chicago in March. We're so committed to it that we proposed a session on about just that:
http://chicago2011.drupal.org/sessions/drupal-7-s-multilingual-system

Once you register to this DrupalCon (which I'm sure you're going to), remember to check out this session proposal and vote for it.

It's going to be fun.

You'll be hearing about how Drupal manages translations, how to build a multilingual theme and how to get existing translations for Drupal core and contributed modules.

Until the session, you can view the status in our multilingual D7 progress page.
