Local government

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Towns, cities, rural districts, and other municipalities could benefit greatly by migrating from frequently proprietary and outdated software services to world-class free software content management systems built for community involvement... such as Drupal. This group facilitates work on features for people's participation or to pushing governments to provide more information and allow greater involvement.

Faulty website could cost county $47,000

Local news, thought I'd pass along.

Guilford County taxpayers have spent $47,000 on a website so flawed that it may never debut online.
In fact, the site is so full of bugs that county officials said they’re not sure any of it can be salvaged.

Modules especially useful for local government

We're going to be switching over to Drupal in 2011, and I was wondering if any of you were utilizing any specialized modules that you found especially useful or helpful as a local government?

For example - I searched government and modules and found "Fill PDF" - which apparently lets you fill out forms right on the screen and then e-mails it out. That would seem pretty useful for a government situation where having residents filling out paperwork is a fact of life. (If you're using this and it works well, please let me know).

Thanks.

Drupal Engagement on GovLoop

All,

I just wanted to make everyone aware of the Drupal CMS Club group on GovLoop. We have almost 100 members at this point. Now that I have some time to focus on Gov 2.0 engagement again, I would be thrilled if anyone from this group joined and engaged in conversation on the site.

OpenBlock Geolocation Hack-a-thon at MIT Media Lab

MIT and Hacks/Hackers are hosting an OpenBlock hack-a-thon Oct. 30 at noon. Why should local Drupalists care?

OpenBlock by itself is an interesting news aggregator, but it's various components, which can be de-coupled, could be very cool, doing everything from auto-geotagging content, very customizable mapping, and much more. Tapping into these components could help a lot of Drupal sites I've seen.

RSVP here for the meetup:

why use Drupal for city government?

Hi Folks-
Can anyone point to a list of resources/arguments describing why Drupal is clearly the best CMS choice for city government?
Anything that takes a comparative approach and considers open source vs. commercial products is ideal.
You don't have to sell Drupal to me, I'm already a fan... I'm just doing some homework.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have-
Nate

Grants for local govt. agencies to install a Drupal website?

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is a public transportation agency in northern California. As with most transit agencies in the US, we are having funding challenges.

We would like to switch from plain old HTML to Drupal. Are there any grants that would fund design, installation and creation of a Drupal website for a local government agency, including moving old content to the new site?

Drupal for Law Enforcement

I just finished completing an intranet site for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, located in Florida.

We are using Drupal to collect intelligence, communicate with personnel instantly, and keep track of daily activities. Our county is divided into five main geographical areas spread over seventy-two miles.

I made a brief write-up here: http://www.radarearth.com/content/brevard-county-sheriffs-office-uses-dr...

Gov 2.0 Guide to Drupal

A few minutes ago, GovFresh published my new article on Drupal adoption in Government. The article can be found at http://govfresh.com/2010/05/gov-2-0-guide-to-drupal/. While I had a number of folks in the community review the draft, I am sure there are a number of things that are not in the piece which everyone feels are important proof points for this topic. I therefore intend to solicit feedback from the members of this group and will publish the additional content in a follow-up in a few months. Please feel free to share your thoughts here.

Starter Web Site - Next Step

Brian Gilday at aHa! consulting did a post almost three months ago which led us to a conversation by phone and email. I would suggest you all revisit this discussion but would in particular draw your attention to the West Linn site.

At the West Linn site you will not only see a clean, well organized, site (imo) but you will also see an example of personalization - My West Linn - something we were keen on at the Wayland ECC.

Login Limbo

Sorry everyone. I was one of the users who got caught in "login limbo" and haven't been able to either log into the groups site or, for that matter, get it fixed. You might say Gordon Fowler is still there and Fowler Gordon has emerged to take his place.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to get my old self back. It might well have been self-inflicted, but how would I know?

In the mean time there are a few things to bring up and I'll do so in the appropriate section. Maybe we can get things moving again.

Gordon .... er... or is it Fowler?

Last chance for workflow support in D7 Core

While the more expansive workflow features that were proposed did not make it in time for code freeze, we still have an opportunity during the current "code slush" period to make a few key alterations to the underlying Drupal database. This will enable further development in Contrib of comprehensive workflow and content moderation modules, with an eye towards D8. However, time is running out. After October 15, all hope is lost.
