Newspapers on Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is a place for people working at newspapers running on - or planning to run on - Drupal to share ideas, problems and solutions.

Making resources accessible beyond the group?

The "best posts" wiki documents listed at the top of the Newspapers on Drupal group page are valuable resources, and from time to time I want to direct non-members to them (including at times entire classrooms full of students). But it seems they are only accessible to logged in members.

DrupalCON and Newspapers on Drupal

DrupalCON Boston promises to be the biggest and (of course) the best DrupalCON ever. How do I know? Well, I'm helping organize part of the "Site Building" track of the conference. I'm also organizing and hosting the first ever News Industry meetup. Do you plan to attend?

There will also be a first-ever Job Fair at this DrupalCON. Sponsoring organizations can come recruit talent at the Job Fair.

Which Site Search do you use?

Can anybody suggest what the best site search technique might be best for a 30,000+ article site?

We tried using the Drupal search module (indexing words, posts and users in our site's content) about 12 months or so ago. But we had problems, principally due to CCK fields from what I can remember, and so we jettisoned it in favour of Google Custom search.

Google is okay, but we'd like something more customised than they allow.

We currently run 4.7, but are looking to upgrade soon.

Any advice gratefully received.

Install profile for Newspapers – any further along?

We are beginning the development of a green building news portal and we are wondering if there have been any further advancements towards creating an install profile that covers many of the aspects of a good newspaper site. We are game to work with other end-users and a development team to arrive at this solution. What about someone who has a decent newspaper site that can have a generic version created to accommodate practically any type of focus topic? Am I over simplifying the task?

Thank you,
Jeff

Drupal best features for newspapers

Greetings,

We (rue89.com) are giving a 2-days seminar to 15 african journalist/web project managers.
As the technical manage, I will give a presentation of drupal and why is it good for newspaper. We have used Drupal for 3 newspaper related website, so I am starting to know why drupal is good for that use. As an engineer I also know that I like Drupal for its technical qualities (think modularity, quality of code, performances; extensibility, ...).

Now on Drupal - HamptonRoads.com and PilotOnline.com

Hello all,

I wanted to introduce myself, and our now-powered-by-Drupal sites, PilotOnline.com and HamptonRoads.com. I'm Jeff Anderson, and I work as the product development manager for the interactive division of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper based in Norfolk, Virginia. The Pilot is a top 50/60 U.S. daily newspaper by circulation size, and PilotOnline.com was one of the first newspaper websites to go online in the early 1990s. Along with its sister site HamptonRoads.com, a local portal focused on entertainment, community and local guides, we recently ranked No. 6 in the U.S. in terms of the percentage of users in a local market who use a particular locally-focused site. On December 10, we re-launched both sites on a customized Drupal 5.x platform.

Drupal and Memory / Development Gotchas

Hi all,

I was wondering what the experience out there has been with drupal's memory consumption -- has it been an issue with your project?

Also, I'm curious if there were there other "gotchas" during your Drupal app development.

Our team here is working on a smallish city guide-type application (which will have a good amount of detail on the business listings), and we're forked on the soon-to-be-age-old question: Drupal or Django? I'm working on learning as much as possible before our raft takes to the river.

News site module wish list

If you were to ask Santa Claus to bring you something to help your news site building/integration projects this year, what would you ask for?

Some examples: NITF import? NewsML import? Proprietary import from (fill in the blank legacy newsroom CMS)? Quark integration? InDesign integration? Web-to-print classifieds? Facebook tools? Javascript "badges?"

What would position Drupal as a more effective tool for you to improve your website, cut costs, connect with a larger audience, provide more effective community services, et cetera?

Post your answers below.

Personalization and message feeds

While Drupal already has many of the tools necessary to implement social networking techniques on a community site, I haven't found anything that works like the personalized central "News Feed" system in Facebook or Twitter.

I'm curious whether anyone has done any development work, planning or merely thinking about how this might be done in Drupal, and about the implications.

Newspapers, students, and GHOP

As part of the Google Highly Open Participation Contest, add1sun has posted a quick how-to guide for creating a student newspaper with Drupal.

GHOP provides incentives for high school students to participate in open source software projects. As a Summer of Code mentor, I urge everyone to participate. It's a great way to give back to the Drupal community.

How many modules is too many?

I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether Drupal will ultimately buckle under the weight of too many modules.

I turn to this forum because, as newspaper sites wanting to entice readers and enhance their experience with all sorts of 'bells and whistles', we are more likely to want to add a lot more modules than a lot of other websites.

But, we're wondering how adding more and more modules will affect future performance and whether Drupal will ultimately be able to handle it.

Mediaspan Software

I have currently been pulled into developing a site for a local newspaper that uses Mediaspan software to publish their paper. I am a developer, not a newspaper person, so I am not familiar with this particular application. Does anyone else use this, and if so, is there an easy way to export articles out of it into a Drupal site?

Also, is the Classified module worthy?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

:)

Wildlife news portal with Drupal

Hi,

My first Drupal-based site is up: WildlifeWatch http://www.wildlifewatch.in/

i) The site extensively uses Views and Contemplate.
ii) There are seven content types as of now.
iii) There are two section/landing pages inside: http://www.wildlifewatch.in/news-india/ and http://www.wildlifewatch.in/news-world/ The others will be customised only as when they get populated and we have more content to play around with.
iv) There are some 70 or 80 different TPL files. Mainly used with Views for Blocks.

How to evaluate a news website

This seemed the most appropriate forum; so I am posting my query here.

I want to know whether someone has some kind of formula to evaluate the value of a news website? I site I have in mind is not a generic news site, but a b2b news site.

Depending on current unique users, potential users, current revenue, potential revenue, site size, site architecture, etc.

Whatever I have seen so far on the Web is all ad hoc. There doesn't seem to be any vague formula even anywhere. Does anyone have any idea about existing benchmarks?

Some parameters can be quantified, while some can't be.

The Rake Magazine relaunches on Drupal

Drew Gorton has posted a detailed look at how The Rake Magazine, a Minneapolis-based journal of local culture, arts and politics, migrated its extensive site from a mishmash of custom code and blogware to Drupal. The relaunch has "30 content types, 40+ fields, 5 themes (4 of which are for generating HTML for email newsletters), 70+ template (*.tpl.php) files, 30+ views, 40+ blocks and over 7,000 nodes."

Which modules should I try given these circumstances?

I am creating a community news site where anyone is eligible to contribute articles. I have been playing with and learning about drupal a few weeks now. I am pretty comfortable with html and css but not really familiar with php. I have taught myself everything I know through books and net vids so I can figure things out with proper instruction or documentation. I am also a Realtor so I know nothing about running a news organization. The following is what I have as organization so far.
