LA Code Sprint and Developer Workshop

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'd like to plan a workshop / code sprint within the next month in Los Angeles. I have a couple ideas on what we could tackle as a group, but am open to suggestions.

I'd like to accomplish two things in this session

1. Help mentor new developers teaching Drupal best practices and guidance in establishing/enhancing a good Drupal / LAMP development environments.
2. Create a new module from scratch - OR - fix a contrib module.

I love the idea. I have

I love the idea. I have some experience from participating in the Minnesota search code sprint earlier this month and would love to help out. Like you've done, I think the best first step is to develop a specific goal for the sprint, improving x module, creating a module for x, writing documentation for x modules, writing test coverage for x, etc.

There are plenty of talented developers in LA so I don't think attracting support is going to be a problem. I wish I were able to make the meeting tonight to discuss this further but I'm all for it. Great work getting the ball rolling Mike!

Venue & Date

mike stewart's picture

Perhaps it's obvious, but I didn't mention this type of meeting would likely need to occur on a weekend - since the get together could easily turn into a day-long adventure.

Thanks for the kind words Blake, I wouldnt want to have our kickoff sprint without you or someone else of your community involvement. so you or someone should suggest an upcoming weekend (just not Fathers day weekend). Once we get an idea of participants, we can lock in a Venue. ChadCross at Juxtaflo has volunteered their office - but it can only hold maybe 8-10 people. they have a great office, but it's small so I think 7 people would be really comfortable, more might have people on the floor. (But I think they sweep). If we need room for more, I'm sure we can find an alternate venue - but we'll want firm commitments.

If Chad's place ends up

BlakeLucchesi's picture

If Chad's place ends up being too small. I think if we can't find a private venue, using a school/library would likely be our best bet. I know I've said it before and everyone looks at me funny because it is a bit out of the way, but I can get us free space at UC Irvine. Alternatively we might look to use a public library like the one in Santa Monica or some other space at another college/university in the area such as SMCC or LMU (Cary Gordon has contacts there), maybe the Art Institute, or I have contacts at CSULB also that maybe we could utilize. Anyone else with ideas/contacts that could be of use please chime in.

integrate flickr module(s) with imagefield

OpenChimp's picture

I'd love a code sprint aimed at integrating flickr images into imagefield so that they can be manipulated using imagecache and other associated modules. This would be a HUGE step forward for flickr related modules like Embedded Media Field. I think this would be a good candidate for several reasons, but especially because it's beneficial to a broad audience, so it would be good for the whole drupal community.

I have more to post on this topic but am thinking that I'll make a wiki page for the porposal so that other drupalers can add to the brainstorming for how to approach this. I'll add a link after I make the posting.

Regardless of the topic that gets chosen, I'm interested in being a part of the sprint.

As far as when this should happen. Anytime sounds good to me, except for the weekend of June 21/22. I'll be out of town.

Name a Date & a Topic

mike stewart's picture

Date

Possible Sprint Date June 7th or 8th.

Personally I'm unavailable on Fathers day weekend... (as I suspect others are busy too). June 21/22 Mikey gone, and Blake is busy hosting a workshop on Site Building. June 7th or 8th MIGHT be a rush for me in terms of organizing... but I can make it.

anyone else have a preference on date or topic? Anyone planning on joining us? I was hoping to do it before our next meeting... and depending on who is interested might make a difference on what our focus is.

Sprint Ideas

  • In IRC Chris Charlton suggested a code sprint foccussed on ladrupal.org. not an overhaul, but there are things we can do to add some "umpf"
  • Might be able to combine Chris's Idea with MikeyLikesIt's idea.
  • CVS & development setup primer
  • Anything Media Related

Venue

  • Long Beach
  • (I Think) Chris is checking on RMI's ability to host
  • A local college. (I'm good with Irvine, CSULB, or Loyola - have all been suggested. What's your preference? Will a certain location prevent you from attending?)

Looks like in the time I was writing this, Chris posted a planning wiki: http://groups.drupal.org/node/11866

Not sure it's what you want to hear ... (meaning topic) ...

I'm not sure on the date or Venue - [but if you guys are thinking about combining the Flickr and LA Drupal . org or just rebooting (what the heck is rebooting?.heh) LA Drupal . org - Then I guess count me in.

Another month

Chris Charlton's picture

I say more lead time, promotion, planning, and some other month like July+. Maybe we'll hold it at DrupalCamp LA?

I think July would work out

BlakeLucchesi's picture

I think July would work out good assuming we could find a date that gets necessary attendance. I think combining this with the DrupalCamp dilutes both events. I think it should be separate from the DrupalCamp and the focus should be on working on Drupal as opposed to talking about Drupal. Just my 2 cents.

In regards to a date, I think a weekend would work well, or possibly a friday/saturday thing if that makes more sense. Lets hash out as many of the details as possible before the june meeting so we can declare a date and get things set.

Also interested in this.

Moving to Long Beach this month, so a Drupal event in LBC would be something I would very much be interested in and could help out with. July or later...
