Intro to Drupal Hands-On for Drupal Camp NYC 6

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

Attendees!

Follow the below instructions to make sure you are ready for this session BEFORE you come to DrupalCampNYC!

Why? Biggest reason is to make sure you have all the files that may be used during the presentation (no guarantee we'll use them all!) You may be able to get a network connection and download them there, but from experience at prior Drupal camps not everyone is successful hooking up to the wireless. To be safe rather than sorry follow the below instructions so you have the files already on your machine...

Are you a newbie to Drupal wanting to see "what it's all about"? Want to leave Drupal camp with a working install of Drupal running on your machine to play with? Want to get a solid overview of how to set up Drupal, create and configure a basic site, and use some cool modules to add functionality? Then this is where you'll want to be on Saturday.

What you need to do BEFORE you come to DrupalCampNYC

  1. If you bring a laptop (with power cord and extension cable - outlets are in short supply! NOTE: I am bringing an extension cable and octopus of terminal strips, anyone else who has, please bring as well. AshokanKid) you can install Drupal on your computer and follow along with the set up. This is recommended as it means that you'll have something to play with when you've finished the session.
  2. Download Drupal 6.10 to your computer
  3. Make sure you have a program that can open .tar.gz files
    1. For Windows 7-Zip is one freeware option. (Macs and Linux have this ability built-in.)
  4. Download some software - but don't install it - we'll go through that first thing in the morning Saturday. This software lets your computer act like a web server, so we can install Drupal on it.
    1. For Macs download MAMP. Download the latest version (unless it is not compatible with your version of the Mac OS)
    2. For Windows download WAMPServer
      1. Download the Installer file
    3. For Linux download follow the instructions for your distro to setup the AMP components on your machine (Apache, MySQL, and PHP). Here are Ubuntu instructions from the Drupal web site (it says Gutsy, but should be same for Hardy).
  5. Download these additional resources (modules, and other files that will be used during intro session)

Here is the proposed schedule

As with any Barcamp all is subject to change the day of the camp.

What Time (approx.) Presenter Description
Help Setting up your "AMP" stack (MAMP, WAMPServer, etc.) 9 am - 10:30 Peter Dowling (winstond), Thomas (tom_o_t), anyone else who wants to help out. If you want to help out please download the above to a thumb drive so you can help anyone who either didn't get the message to download these or whatever. Get help from experienced folks getting your machine ready for "hands on" while you have breakfast!
Set Up Drupal (Hands On) 10:30 - 11:30 Peter (winstond), Tom (tom_o_t) A quick "what is Drupal" followed by a walk through setting up an initial site from creating the database, running the install, and initial config. At the end of this session you will hopefully have a running installation of Drupal on your local machine!
Create a basic site (Hands On) 11:30 - 2:00 (break for lunch somewhere in the middle) Peter (winstond), Thomas (tom_o_t) We'll take our fresh Drupal install and put it through its paces. We'll install modules to enhance functionality, create content, set up user permissions, talk about blocks and layout, work on our menus, and maybe even try some different themes. When we are done hopefully you'll have a good feel for the primary elements of Drupal, know the "lingo", and feel much more confident to start using Drupal to create sites.
