Drupal Mapping Sessions

Hi folks,

Just wanted to let you know that two of the MappingTogether.org folks are going be in town next Tuesday for two presentations, in conjunction with TACS and NTEN. MappingTogether is a new org - but old faces, spun off from CTC. You've likely used MT's tools - if you've ever used the Gmaps or Location modules. (BDragon is with MT these days...).

Here are the details:

Start 2010 off with PDXTech4Good, a good map, and a cold beer!

NPOs and NGOs are using modern mapping technologies for a variety of
purposes and projects from tracking endangered species to visualizing

Views Groupby Date Granularity

Hi all,

I've got a View that displays content types sorted by a date field. The Date field contains month, day and year. The sort works fine.

But I'd like to group the listings by Year. I can Group by the date field, but it doesn't give me enough granularity to specify the Year, only the whole date. This creates a "group" for each day. Is there a way that I can get the granularity that I need to group by year only?

Thanks in advance.

Best PM software (for Agile development)

I've been asking around among friends and colleagues to find out which Project Management software people think is the best, particularly for accommodating Agile development, and have been getting a lot of mixed responses, so I thought it would be a good question to post.

Exposed Filters

Hi all,

I'm trying to implement a Google Map in conjunction with a table of data related to the points on the map. I'd like both views to reside in the same page.

I've got both the Map and the Table configured as separate Views. I'm using Exposed Filters in the Table view to give the user a way to modify the original (all) view. I'd like the Map to update as well as the Table when the user changes search criteria through the Exposed Filters.

How can I make this happen?

Thanks in advance.

09/12/09 December User Group meeting

1) I've included what I (drewid) could capture about on-screen activity in case it's helpful, but I realize it probably won't make sense to anyone who wasn't there.
2) In my notes, I have tried to follow the convention of capitalizing the names of modules, but since I am still learning the nomenclature of Drupal, I am sure there are inaccuracies.
3) I didn't include links to sites that were shown, in case it wasn't permissible by the content owner. Presenters, please add them in if you feel comfortable allowing them to be shared.

How to generate multiple terms argument

Hi all,

This seems like it should be easy, I must be missing something.

I need to dynamically filter a view using an argument. The field the argument is based upon is a CCK text field. I need the filter to allow for multiple terms, but the views "Configure Argument" dialog doesn't seem to have the checkbox "Allow multiple terms per argument" for a text based field. How can I create a multiple term argument for a text based field?

Unlimited search and teaser views, but require role for full page view

Gosh, this seems like it should be an easy one, I'm surprised that I haven't had to do it before....

Any thoughts on how to set up a paid-membership site that allows unauthenticated users to search all content on the site, but then not have access to read the full-page view of that content w/o having a specific user role?

Out of the box, to allow a user to find content via the search they need access to view the content type, right? So, I could create a new permission in a custom module, or "cheat" and just check for a specific role before displaying the content in a full page view.

Meeting Notes to Tickets converter

Hi all, I'm looking to see what might be out there before I design this myself.

Goal: Copy and paste notes from a meeting into a node and have Drupal make nodes (tickets/cases, whatev) out of them.

Reason: Too much time is spent entering tickets into a system and teams often resort to just managing a list in a Wiki which can quickly get out of control.

Any examples/leads/insights are appreciated :) If there are not examples out there, a starting place is at least an easy syntax for when you are taking notes quickly that will convert well into tickets.

How to trigger contexts on Views pages

Hi Folks,

Curious how best to skin this cat. I'm looking to trigger a context based upon the arguments passed to a view. The view is using a page layout. The argument is a taxonomy term. The context condition is set by that taxonomy term.

December User Group Meeting

2009-12-09 18:00 - 19:30 America/Los_Angeles
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

A theme has emerged from recent offers to present, namely, ways to avoid the use of panels. To round it out, I'm hoping one or two of the folks who use Panels will volunteer to do the Modules 101 introduction (what kind of problems does Panels solve and what are the gotchas associated for complete beginners) as well as a more hands-on example of how to use Panels.

Tentative Agenda

  • Introductions and Call for Notetaker
  • Modules 101: (shifthappens) A 5-10 minute overview of a Drupal module for beginners. This month: Panels. (beginner introduction)
  • Panels: (shifthappens) A more advanced look at how to use panels. (beginner hands-on)
  • Content Template: (jnicola) Using node-content_type.tpl.php instead of Panels. (beginner / intermediate)
  • Context: (jhedstrom) Using the context module as an alternative to panels.
  • Node Reference & Co.: (emptyvoid) Node reference / node relationships / modal dialog API / alternative to panels (advanced)
  • Announcements: Items of Interest from User Group members

Hello Portland Drupal

I am a total noob and just wanted to say Hi. I am trying to learn Drupal and all that it includes. I have bought several books and find them somewhat helpful. I look forward to meeting some of you at one of the monthly meetings. I have never been a programmer, but seem to be the IT support for my group at work. The reason that I am trying to learn the art of Drupal is that I want to create a local community website that is not controlled by any government or business entity where everyone can have a space for their different group.

How to tie a CCK (radio select) field and a MENU together programatically?

Hello,

Looking into writing a custom trigger->action module.

But first I wanted to check if this has already been done.

Basically I have Panels which read the arg0 variable in the URL to call up Nodes that have a drop-down CCK field that matches the arg0 passed to it.

What I am missing, is a way for a MENU item to be automatically created at the same time [and with the same identifier] as a value in a radio-select field for Page_Area.

iTunes Feed Help

I have setup a podcast site with the iTunes module. I have added the itunes image into the feed, but unlike many other feeds, there is not standard tag. I do not have a thumbnail coming up in the iTunes directory and my suspicion is that it's this missing image tag that is causing the issue. How can I add an tag to my feed?

Drupal once again wins two Packt awards

Only local images are allowed. This week,
Packt Publishing has been announcing the winners of their 2009 open source CMS awards. Today they announced that Drupal was the first winner of a brand new category introduced this year: the Hall of Fame award. This new category featured a competition between Drupal and Joomla!, the previous winners of the Best CMS Award, an award neither is eligible for this year.

As a subset of this new award, Packt also announced the results of two new awards, recognizing specific contributions within the Drupal and Joomla! communities. Best Drupal Theme was won by a wide margin by Zen, and no real surprise there. Congratulations to Zen maintainer John Albin (JohnAlbin) and thanks for all your fantastic work. Best Drupal Module award was, again unsurprisingly, won by Views, with CCK a creditable second. Well done to Views maintainer Earl Miles (merlinofchaos) and thanks for the most incredible chunk of functionality I've ever used.

Earlier in the week Drupal also won the 2009 award for Best Open Source PHP CMS for the second year in a row. No surprise that Joomla! was in the mix and that the vote was close, but it is surprising that Drupal only narrowly beat out Wordpress. Of course there are a lot of really good reasons why Wordpress, excellent though it is, belongs in a different category to far more comprehensive CMSs like Drupal and Joomla!, and this is reflected in discussions on that thread. Both are excellent projects, but Wordpress is a great choice for simpler sites, but not for anything with even basic content/data complexity.

One final award that concerns Drupal is the Most Valued People from Open Source Content Management Systems award, and no surprise that Drupal founder Dries Buytaert (Dries) was Drupal's MVP.

In other awards Best Other Open Source CMS (i.e. non-PHP) was, for the second year in a row, won by Plone, a really excellent Python-based CMS. Runners up were dotCMS and mojoPortal. My own feeling is that Wordpress is the best option for simple sites, kind of a fourth Musketeer, with the Three Musketeers being Drupal, Joomla! and Plone, the latter being the best of the bunch for more complex sites and sites that need to evolve. All four are outstanding open source projects and powerful tools in the web developer's arsenal.

Most Promising Open Source CMS was won by ImpressCMS, with Pixie and Pligg tied for second. This is kind of like a Best Rookie award.

Tomorrow Packt will announce the winner for Best Overall Open Source CMS, the award won in 2007 and 2008 by Drupal and for which we were no longer eligible this year. Nominees are DotNetNuke, MODx, SilverStripe, WordPress and XOOPS and I would be stunned if Wordpress does not win that and I wonder if any debate with result from this.

See the overview of this year's awards for more information, including prize money, award details, runners up, etc. You can also see their list of previous award winners (Drupal won Best Overall and Best PHP in 2008 and Best Overall in 2007).
