Anyone want to run a Drupal booth at SCALE?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The Southern California Linux Expo is coming up February 8-10, 2008 at the Westin Los Angeles Airport. Myself and Addi Berry (add1sun) will be there, at least on February 8 for the Women in Open Source mini-conference.

I was asked by Gareth J. Greenaway, one of the conference organizers, if we wanted to run a Drupal booth at the conference, but unfortunately we'll probably only be there the one day, and be jumping between the conference and our workshops we're holding at the same time. :\ But, if someone else wants to take this on, please coordinate with Gareth at g [at] socallinuxexpo [dot] org. This would be a great opportunity to show off Drupal to a lot of fellow geeks. :)

Hi there, I'll have to clear things with work, of course, but if I'm at all available, I'd love to help out. Let's be in touch on this.

hmmmmm... I may be able to make time for this

OpenChimp's picture

I've never run a booth before but would be love to meet more drupalers and so cal tech people.

What kind of work would be involved in setting up the booth? Should we have presentations to give, or just be prepared for Q&A?

I have good general knowledge of drupal but there are a lot of areas where development related questions would leave me stumped. If we could get a little group of 2-3 people with diverse knowledge, I think this could work really well.

I will clear some time for this. Saturday looks like the best day for me.

As a shameless Drupal promoter, this is perfect for me.

BlakeLucchesi's picture

I've registered for the conference. I'm not sure what kind of booth we are going to be running but would it be practical to prepare some materials such as handouts/business cards/fliers? It also might be a good idea for those helping out to go through some of the hand book pages and know whats there so that when you talk to new people you can point them to good directions.

I can do some booth time

I plan to be available most of both days.

Do we have sample Drupal sites to show. (Internet access may be slow.)

We still need screen for the projector. A 4'x6' piece of foamcore would be perfect. Otherwise a white sheet with hems at top & bottom to insert pvc tubes would work. I can supply the tubes.

Showcase/promote Drupal 6...

gusaus's picture

...would seem to be a good underlying theme for these types of events. This may be a good thread to jump on regarding potential ideas and resources. There's also an irc channel setup for the launch (#drupal-marketing).

Having said that, unless SCALE is on my mom's 'things i must see while in LA' list (she'll be in town from Boston), I don't think I'll be in attendance.

Drupal 6 demo site?

OpenChimp's picture

I want to work on putting together some materials on Drupal 6.

I'd like to try to set up a demo version of Drupal 6 on my local computer, so we would have a local server to run demos from. I'm not sure how easy this will be since I'm fairly new to using my Mac on which I have MAMP running. I think I can only have one site installed so I'd have to switch off my D5 development sites to do it.

Has anyone already installed and played around with D6? I haven't done it yet, so if you have any pointers of specific features that should be highlighted, or modules that should be installed for the demo, let me know.

CCK & Views aren't ready for D6 which puts some serious limits on what kind of demo site I could put together, so I guess it will basically have to just be a plain install of D6. I could install the Devel module so that the Theme Developer Tools could be shown off, which are really awesome.

Having said all this about D6, I think having a more full featured demo site running D5 would also be great. One where users could play around with some of the cooler modules: cck, views, imagefield, imagecache, pathauto, custom breadcrumbs, date, calendar, etc.

What do you guys think? Will a demo site like this be good for the booth? D5 and/or D6?

Installing multiple

BlakeLucchesi's picture

Installing multiple instances of Drupal with MAMP is as simple as creating multiple sub folders to your 'localhost' directory, wherever that may be on your computer. Just set the base directory in your settings.php file to "http://localhost/[sub folder name]" and all the links will be built properly.

In regards to brining some demos, I plan on bringing my laptop which includes a number of sites and modules that I have developed on my local machine for clients. All of these are Drupal 5 though.

Blake

subdomains also work

mike stewart's picture

I'm not using MAMP, (and don't get me started on apple raping OSS cuz thats off topic :-P),

but on my ubuntu laptop I use subdomains for development. it allows for simple multisite setup. each site directory is "subdomain.dr5.host" or "subdomain.dr6.host" (for me subdomains are the equivalent of a client or project).

my dev laptop has both dr5 and dr6 running. I'll be there both days. i was planning to show default drupal stuff - plus some example sites. lets talk more tonight.

p.s. - do I sound holier than thou? damn. I just voted... so I've got a bad attitude about the current state of everything, right now. lol

D6 Links

OpenChimp's picture

If anyone has links to some cool D6 sites, with good videos or just good content, add them here please.

Drupal 6.0 RC3 released - I think this will be replaced by an official release, but here's the download link for the RC

Theme developer module for Drupal 6 - Screencast - This blew me away! These types of tools are going to make themeing in D6 so much smoother, especially those of us still learning the system.

Building powerful and robust websites with Drupal 6 - a book for D6 - How is this already out?

What's new in Drupal 6 (composing a marketing "brochure") - there are a bunch of other links on this page with more info

Contributed modules status - version 6.x - I think it would be good to have a basic idea of when D6 will be ready for implementing real website projects.

http://www.lullabot.com/videocasts/installing-drupal-6 - probably not something useful for the convention, but a good resource for the curious drupal newbie.

I'll add more links as I find them.

Drag and drop video

There's probably a better one out there, but here's something to show for this awesome feature:

http://fooooo.com/watch.php?id=ecf77377a3cfd3f1ecfe0c677ecdccbf

This is probably the kind of feature that would be better shown with a demo site that people could actually use.

Cool Drupal Sites

OpenChimp's picture

Having a set of sites to show off what drupal is capable of would be great. It might be best to just capture screenshots of these site for showing on the projector (do we have a screen yet?). Add links to some of your favorites.

The Drupal booth was a big success

Chris Charlton's picture

People have heard of Drupal!

The SCALE 6x Drupal booth was a great success. Our LA Drupal volunteers did a magnificent job.

Here's the photos I posted on flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrischarlton/2257606755/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrischarlton/2257606901/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrischarlton/2257606621/

A lot of people have heard of or tried an older version of Drupal. We promoted the hell out of it at this expo. We had every booth volunteer answering questions all day. It wasn't until Sunday before the crowd finally started to taper off.

Lullabot had provided a speaking session at this expo for Drupal, so most folks had attended that and our booth was the spot for answers! Great job everyone.

We were across from the Red Hat booth and we had more people talk to us than them.

Also, the Joomla booth was next to Google, but their traffic seemed dry compared to ours. Google had a bunch of freebies that lit up, so not sure if being next to Google was a blessing or a curse for that expo.

Fun event

It was great seeing and talking to everyone on Saturday. See you at the next group meet.

SCALE was definitely a

BlakeLucchesi's picture

SCALE was definitely a success, I had a great time friday and saturday meeting people interested in Drupal. We handed out a lot of the local group fliers so I would think we'll be able to have 30+ people at our next meetup. I think Chris has all of the names that were entered into the raffle. One thing I know we discussed on Saturday was possibly requiring that the people that win the book come pick it up at the next meetup. Also, if we can get a send them all an email with instructions on how to stay informed with us through our groups site that would be great, mention that they can subscribe to the rss feed to get alerts as well.

Great work everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone again later this month.

My first time as booth boy. It was fun ...

OpenChimp's picture

Nice Pic Gus!

It was fun talking to people about drupal and helping answer their questions.  And it was great to talk more with the other drupalers at the booth.  I kinda wish I'd been there Saturday since was a lot more traffic and schwag.  The LA Drupal group is really picking up momentum!

Some of the biggest frustrations I heard from people were about:

  • migrating from older versions of drupal (4.6, 4.7)
  • getting started with setting up site -
  • making a site look good

how can we help to fix this?

  • Promote Drupal Profiles - In theory, install profiles could make it easy for users to install drupal and have what they really need to get their website going already pre-configured with all the modules they need.  The blog profile is a prime example.  People coming from systems like wordpress are used to install and use, without having to do hours of configuration.  The blog profile would get them there, IF THEY KNEW IT EXISTED.
    • link to install profiles from the main drupal project page - one of the big problems with install profiles is that they can only be used when starting from scratch, so users need to know about them before the even download the drupal project, since they can't be added on after the fact.
    • Super Modules/Packages - I've written elsewhere more about the direction I'd like to see install profiles move: Why Install Profiles are inflexible and what would be better. And on a related note about the need to package more prebuilt items with cck and views.
    • I think Installation Profiles is a terrible name for this feature.  I think very few people especially newbies, for whom these profiles are the most useful, might guess correctly what this refers to.  Distributions would be a better term - is that inaccurate in some way?  "Drupal Flavors" would work better too!  Changing the name however may cause more confusion than it's worth ...
  • Improve the intro homepage - the page you see before any content has been posted.
    • Links to Cookbooks (Website Recipes)/Help improve them - sending new users to the modules download pages really doesn't work.  There are 2000+ modules, and some of the most basic functionality has many different modules to choose from.  Having users be able to check out different site recipes would be much more effective to educate newbies and help them get their first site up and running.
    • Links to Theming Handbook pages - Users who want to get an intro to how to change the appearance of the site they are working on need several links so they understand how themeing works
      • How to change theme handbook page
      • Link to Themes Download section
      • Advanced theming handbook pages

Ideas for next time

Raffle Entry on website - We could have quite easily created a form for people to enter their email address into our website ladrupal.org, which would save us the effort of entering the addresses in by hand now.  And these people would have seen our site.

Website Showcase - For the second half of Sunday, I set up my laptop to cycle through tabs which displayed various sites built with drupal.  A LOT of people stopped to watch, and were really impressed when they were told that all those sites were built on Drupal.  We should definitely do that at the next event.  There are a lot more sites to be found and shown off: http://drupal.org/node/219476 It was really easy to set up with Firefox's Tab Slideshow, but BEWARE it has serious bugs that make it go crazy if more than one window is open and I couldn't find start and stop controls. Maybe it'll get fixed ???

Drupal Pamphlets - These should really be supplied by the Drupal Association.  We needed to have sheets/postcards for people to take with them that gave a quick breakdown of what drupal is capable of.  With the site competition going on, perhaps screenshots of the winners could be included somewhere on the sheet.

If there are any other conventions/conferences where we can promote drupal, I'd love do it, especially now that I have some better ideas for how to set up the booth.
