Drupal 7 Hosting Cookbook

We've been building up a LAMP stack lately based on Ubuntu Server 10.04 to host Drupal 7 in our datacenter. While there are a number of excellent manuals and tutorials out there, we noticed that very few provide a complete guide to building a Drupal-specific hosting environment, from bare metal up, that is suitable for production use. So... we took a whack at writing one: Drupal 7 Hosting Cookbook.

This guide is by no means exhaustive, but we wanted to share our current work with the community in the hope that others might benefit. In turn, we would love input and advice from the experts in the community that would help make this cookbook better. If there's interest, we'd be happy to present on this topic at an upcoming DUG-TO meetup. It might be cool, for example, to do a discussion panel on best practices for Drupal hosting. Thoughts?

Cheers,
Greg

Major fail with drupal 7

Well, this is just weird, and I'll probably figure out the obvious if I just don't look at it, but I have a drupal 6 site up and running (in a drupal6 directory in web root). I decided to add drupal 7, so I downloaded and extracted it to a drupal7 directory in the same web root as the drupal6 directory, did all the other stuff to install (MySQL db, settings.php, chmod, etc), just like I did with drupal 6.

Then I pointed my browser there and got nothing. Checked the permissions, and they are exactly the same as the drupal6 directory. Did an apache reload, and still nothing.

Drupal 7

Anyone interested in doing a LA code sprint to work on these issues to help get Drupal 7 to beta state?

http://drupal.org/community-initiatives/drupal-core

Ninjitsu Web could provide pizza or something, and help train new developers in the basics of patching, reviewing, and navigating the issue queue, and get set-up with the tools for doing so.

We'd need someone else to provide a location suitable for a room full of laptops, and probably another coordinator to help the experienced dev's collaborate & providing general traffic control.

Google will use site speed to set its Page Rank, will that matter to Drupal 7 sites?

Hola gente!

Drupal 7 Migration

Hey all,

I started working on a Drupal 6 site a bit ago and have the install done, with a theme selected and installed, and am considering migrating to Drupal 7 before I delve farther into developing the site. The only module I have installed other than core is SWF Tools.

http://www.gullski.com

Has anyone heard of Drupal 7 migrations going smoothly to this point? Even if modules and themes are not 7 specific, have they been unstable on 7? Will they even work?

Project Tools for Grassroots Activism

This project is currently being developed at Activism Labs

Overview
This set of tools will allow grassroots activists to better organize projects and campaigns and will also be useful to end-users working on almost any type or project. Existing tools for Drupal are lacking key features, often not very user-friendly, and almost never packaged for easy setup. I will address these problems by:

  • Adding functionality to existing task tracking modules
  • Creating the capacity for subgroups

Field Mapping API

This comes out of the LinkedIn module brainstorm issue, here:
http://drupal.org/node/740690

Basically, we got talking about how we are going to map data coming back from LinkedIn to specific CCK (Drupal 6-)/core (Drupal 7+) fields. I noted I was always wanting to do this, but never managed to tackle the problem properly. For example, the NITF Views module could do with some interface to allow you to map fields to specific elements of the NITF schema. My XML Parser module could do with some kind of field mapper UI too. So could LinkedIn. So could dozens of modules, I'm sure.
