Translations

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

You intend to help to translate the Drupal interface to a language? This is the place! Look into the translator's guide in the Drupal Handbook for detailed documentation, as well as get onto the translations mailing list.

The internationalization group might also be interesting, dealing with content translation support issues in and around Drupal.

i18n module with D7

I I tested the i18n module with D7 and it is not working properly. It does not separate the content based on the language. So on the front page, regardless of the user language selection, the content that is displayed is mixed. Now there is a module called language switcher that enables drupal 7 to separate the content based on the language but it has side effects on the content administration section. Say you are on the English front page, then you click on content -> filter by language (other than English) -> the result would: "no content available".

Any thoughts?

Issues for adding context to strings for translation

In Drupal 7, it's possible to add context to strings, to make it possible to translate the same string in different ways. (More info: http://drupal.org/update/modules/6/7#locale_context )

I've just opened an issue for adding context to "Strong", which needs to be translated in two different ways for Norwegian. Since other languages may have other needs for that string for all I know, I'm posting this alert here, so others can join the discussion. I'll also send an email on the translation mailing list.
The issue is here: http://drupal.org/node/950028

Google Code-In (GHOP v2.0)

Greetings, Transators!

Just wanted to raise to your attention that Google is sponsoring a program to help 13-18 year olds get involved in open source called Google Code-In:http://code.google.com/opensource/gci/2010-11/index.html. The program runs Nov. 22 - January 10, and the past incarnation (GHOP) netted us rockstars such as Jimmy Berry (who wrote the infrastructure for our automated testing bot), Daniel Wehner (who is now a Views co-maintainer), and Charlie Gordon (who has done a bunch of work in core on SimpleTest and D7UX patches).

Adding Strings for Translation for Accessibility

There are a number of places where for accessibility in D7 we still need to add strings to fields in core. There are still quite a few missing labels for fields in and this is very important so that individuals using screen readers have an opportunity to understand what the field represents. We want to do this however in a way which doesn't loading a tonne more work on translators.

How to change strings?

I'm using organic groups module and like to rename the 'group' word to 'chapter'. I used the strings override module http://drupal.org/project/stringoverrides, but can't change some sences, I'm thinking of rename all the 'group' words to 'chapter' in the Organic groups .pot file, but how can I reimport the pot files? I was trying to clear the cache, disable/enable the module, but it won't use my changes in the pot file

Ps. I know this is not a translation issue, but can't find another group to post. This looks the group most simular... Thanks for helping.

Translating strings in module admin pages

We're facing a bit of a sticky problem and are looking for ideas around it. It started with SEO for multilingual sites, but is more general than that.

Some module (e.g., Nodewords), create texts in their own tables. These texts are displayed to visitors (page title, meta description and other), so they need to be translated.

We can use drupal_alter to filter these texts and translate them. The only problem is, how to organize the translations.

How to translate only the website's interface, not the content?

hi,

I'm building a website with drupal for a german audience. All information on this page will be written in German.

I've started developing the website with the default drupal installation package which comes with English as preinstalled language. I did this because it makes it easier for me to search for solution while developing the site. The biggest part of the drupal community speaks English (I guess), so for example tutorials about how to install something are mostly written in English.

Multi-language with views and ubercart

Hi - I'm trying to solve an issue with a multi-language site and the use of views and ubercart. Here's a brief rundown.

Using views I create "events" with are listed on my events page.
Using translation I can take any page or story and translate it into my two secondary languages.

localize.drupal.org: export with suggestions ?

Hi,

I'm quite new to Drupal but trying to help with the translations. Here is what I did: I translated a few strings of the module CCK private fields in Spanish. What I wanted to do after translating those strings was to import them directly into my own drupal installation. However, given that my strings are still in "waiting for approval" mode, they do not get exported. I'm therefore thinking it would be a good idea to add an option in the export function of localize.drupal.org in order to allow exports WITH suggestions that have not been approved yet. Good idea ? Bad idea ?

Translation exports all strings even when Built-in interface is selected

When i choose built-in interface and export translation, it contains translation of all my taxonomies and contents! This prevents me from contributing back my translations. How can i export only the Module and Core strings?
I don't know if it's a bug or not , but by Built-in interface the first thing came into my mind was Content is excluded.

I tried looking for alternative modules but i couldn't find anything.

Any idea?

Using contexts to remove ambiguity in translatable strings

Translators do not translate pieces of text, they translate meanings of pieces of text. For small projects and long text snippets this does not make much of a difference. A human translator can figure out the meaning and come up with a translation for it. Drupal now uses 190.000 unique strings and some of them are used in many places and by many different modules. While it is nice to reuse already translated strings in different places of the user interface some of them have a different meaning albeit having the same text.

Make t() ignore strings from /admin to exclude administration area from translations

Dear fellow translators,

We would like to be able to translate only the strings that are visible to regular, non-admin users. We don't care about the 8000 or so strings that appear only on the administration area.

Here's how we do this:

  1. Change the t() function in core to make it ignore everything coming from an /admin path. Yes, changing core is a nasty habit, but we found no sane way to do this.

  2. Wipe clean the locale tables.

  3. Let it rip. The locale table will be populated shortly.

Better support for RTL/Right-to-left languages (Arabic, Persian, Hebrew) on drupal.org and groups.drupal.org

Output multiple languages at once

I'm stuck with a small problem…

I've built a website for a film festival, in french and english.
Now we have to make the printed brochure. We are using InDesign because it has a built-in XML importer, so with Views and Datasources, I can export all the data I need, but only in one language.
ie:

<title>This is the Fim title</title>
<body>This is the film description</body>

I'm trying to find a way to export translations in the same xml file
ie:
Le titre du film
The film title

UI for translators or How to make translator life easier

Hello.

I think the best way for me is to parse body with regexp to translate needed strings.
Strings are stored in DB table.
Any ideas how implement this in drupal?

I have a lot of English nodes on my site. I want to make UI for my translators.
Nodes have a lot of the same strings, and I want give opportunity to my translators to batch translate any string to other language in all nodes bodies. Do you have any idea about it? Or is it another way to make translator life easier?

Thank you...

CCK option fields or Content Taxonomy for effective translation and filtering?

I am working on a website that ultimately will be available in several languages. It is also going to have a lot of complex CCK content types.

A lot of these fields will be CCK options fields, such as checkboxes, radio buttons and so on. Many of these fields will be usable for filtering and creating lists as well. Some of these options will be added to as the site grows.

What I have been thinking about is the best way to implement this to be flexible, efficient and at the same time make it easy to maintain and translations.

As I see it I have two options:
