LMS (learning management system)

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

Everyone interested in using drupal to power learning management systems (LMS) is welcome to participate. Particularly if you or your company has already built a LMS in drupal or some piece of functionality that could be used for course management or something like that.

This group is an outgrowth of one of the BOF's at drupalcon SF.

Forming a Drupal in Higher Edu Consortium

I've been having a conversation via email with a bunch of higher EDU drupal developers which I'm sick of just talking about so let's make it happen: A Drupal in Higher Education Consortium. The goal of this isn't some kind of bloated, formal relationship but instead a series of lightweight tools across different websites (this one included) in order to help each other through problems we face.

Instructional Content Management System Alpha 4 Distribution Released!

Today we released a new version of ELMS which starts to branch it out into our vision of 3 separate distributions for education. https://elms.psu.edu/ Has all the details and has been completely redone around our new UI for the system. Many of the issues from Alpha 3 have been resolved but this is a fundamentally different system in just about every way. The focus is still on course content but the instructional designer administrative layer helps set the stage that other educational distributions can be built off of.

Advice

I would like to use Drupal to create a website that is a LMS. Students would create an account, log in, and purchase access to online tutorials (flash video). Once purchased, the tutorials would be available for viewing at anytime by the student on his or her login page. They could not download the video but could watch it anytime.

There would also be a forum for each of the modules so students could ask questions. Does this sound like something that would be good for Drupal? Any advice as where to start?

Collaborative Learning Environment Alpha 1 distribution released

An initial build of ELMS: Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE) was released today. The focus of CLE is two fold. The first component is to allow students to collaborate, critique, rate, and comment on each other's assignments / media. This is known as an "Open Studio" concept in the arts and we've tried to mirror it in some of our courses previously.

Elms Alpha 3 Distro released

ELMS Alpha 3 Distribution was released today. I also shot a bunch of tutorial videos, cleaned up the issue queue on d.o., added some new known issues, and put the platform out there. If you liked what you saw in alpha 2, alpha 3 will hopefully blow you away. If you didn't like what you saw, alpha 3 will hopefully blow you away too ;)!

ELMS Public Demo now available!

I wanted to announce here that a Public demo of the new version of ELMS (Alpha 3) can now be accessed at the following address: http://demo.elms.psu.edu/

Alpha 3 is still slated to be released by the end of the March but I wanted to get a demo out ahead of that for some additional feedback. Also, I felt the need to provide some optimism as a reaction to this post in the higher education group.

Flash Front End for Quiz Module

I'm updating a Flash based front end so that it will work with the Quiz module (6.x - 4.0) that works with the Quiz, Services, AMFPHP, and custom modules.

I'm struggling with some of the queries within my custom module that pull the questions and answers from the Quiz tables. I'm trying to make sure I've got the latest VID for each Question and Answer.

Here is the query:

SELECT quiz_node_relationship.parent_nid,
quiz_multichoice_answers.answer,
quiz_multichoice_answers.question_nid,
MAX(quiz_multichoice_answers.question_vid) AS MAX_question_vid,

Drupal as a portfolio vs. Iweb

I have a variety of thoughts on this but am interested in hearing the community perspective. Our school is thinking about using Iweb for student portfolios. Although Iweb is easy to use and the sites the students could create look great out of the box I don't this solution is the right choice. I am looking for ideas on why Drupal would be a better choice. For example, being able to analyze student reflections using Views could be very valuable for system wide learning.

I have created #drupal-elearning - a channel for elearning-related projects. I hope this channel will see more traffic than channels focused on single projects. Welcome in! :) Druplicon is (hopefully) on it's way.

Announcing Certify - a module for awarding PDF certificates in online courses

Certify is a new module for awarding and generating PDF certificates to students based on a set of criterias. Currently supports quizzes from the quiz module and book pages from the book module.

The module require Quiz v4+, Book and pdftk installed on the web server.

It does not have a release yet (it's still rough around the edges and not recommended for production), but has working code in CVS. So feel free to try it out, file issues or submit patches. :)

Drupal Multisite with SSO to Moodle

After some research and testing, I failed to find a working up to date solution for Drupal multisite with SSO to Moodle.

We have several subdomains with Drupal and one domain with Moodle. We need to have users from Drupal sites to login to Moodle without login in a second time. Also, there is a need for Moodle to use Drupal users.

Would someone publish information on how to deal with this problem, please? Thanks.

P.S. We have are not going to use LDAP solution. The organization is too small to maintain LDAP server. We just need SSO implemented.

Managing blended learning and curriculum libraries across multiple languages

Is anyone already doing this in Drupal?
What services, tool, modules, other resources are you using?
Might you be interested in a Drupal Learning Project?

I had an amazing trip to Cambodia in January of 2010 working with Teachers Across Borders (http://teachersacrossborders.org.au) and considering solutions for professional development for in-service teachers.

We hope to eventually find a way to build a Drupal installation profile to support blended learning and cataloging of learning materials, particularly focusing on lesson plans and classroom materials across multiple languages.

OpenScholar and Social Media Classroom

Wanted to let folks know that the Drupal 6 and eventually Drupal 7 upgrade for the http://socialmediaclassroom.com project is going to be done in a way that will make it:

  1. An optional install profile to use with OpenScholar as base

  2. The features of "Blog, Forum, Wiki, Chatroom, Social Bookmarking, Learning E-Portfolio (and microblog and RSS and other data import in Drupal 6 version)" will also be features available for other types of sites if the OpenScholar install profile is run.

Is there some overlap between Curriculum Mapping and Open Media Project's management of controlled metadata vocabularies?

As a part of the Curriculum and Training Group, we have a work group exploring possible solutions for mapping Drupal production roles / job functions to competencies and to learning content. The objective may ultimately be to build a new module that will allow for the easy collection of topics and sub-topics across all curriculum and learning content, as well as a mechanism for managing and distributing such records. (Curriculum and Training Group: http://groups.drupal.org/curriculum-and-training)

Eduglu Alpha 4 is here!

I'm pleased to announce the fourth developer release of Eduglu. Download it at http://eduglu.com/download-eduglu

For this release, we've ported to Eduglu the excellent Notebook feature from Open Atrium, a Drupal-based intranet package. This is a great example of the power of open source development, that improvements to one branch of the Drupal family tree can easily shared and reused on another branch. Expect to seem more of this as the larger Eduglu/Drupal ecosystem grows.

Along with this major addition, there was the normal assortment of bug fixes plus small visual touch-ups.

Test Yourself Alpha 1 is out!

Test Yourself is a Quiz add-on making quiz-taking more pleasant! It is a lot faster and it should look better than the default quiz theme.

The Alpha 1 version is only compatible with multichoice questions, and does not support all quiz features, but it is still useful and make self tests look and perform well.

Proposed Specs for Competency System

there are two parts: Competency repository and the competency-to-product mapping module

Competency Repository

The repository is a space/site dedicated to storing community defined Drupal-related competencies. But what is a competency? How are competencies organized? I have been doing some pondering and tested my thoughts with a google search.
