Intro and call for assistance...
Hi, my name is Bob Gunner and I have worked in Houston media (Both traditional print, broadcast and Internet) since I was 18. I am familiarizing myself with Drupal development to create an alternative news and entertainment publication for The Woodlands area near Houston. I was laid off of a two-year gig as the managing cluster editor and content manager for a media company and have decided it was time to pursue self-employment.

connecting Drupal with InCopy / XML?
Hey guys,
I'm the editor of a Harvard weekly called The Voice. Our online edition is based on Drupal, check it out at www.theHvoice.com
Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has any idea how to connect InCopy with Drupal - in other words, to export XML to Drupal,
and use Drupal as a true newsroom CMS?
Best,

having trouble with navigation
Hi,
I'm new to Drupal and could really use your help. So far, I'm really impressed with its powerful possibilities, but am stuck on the basic issue of how best to organise the navigation for my newspaper site.
I'm using Drupal 5.
I want to organise my content as follows:
- 1 level of sections for news (eg. politics, international, etc.) - each news item will be associated with just one section. This list of sections will form a horizontal nav menu
plus
- for each news item, a secondary subject matter - assigned as a freetag.
Letters to the editor: how would you do this?
I'm using drupal 6 with CCK and Views2 installed (and looking forward to Panels when its in shape for a production site).
I got an idea for managing "letters" on the site, partly inspired by some documentation on using Node Comment and Five Star to create a "review" content type (http://drupal.org/node/234681). (I don't want to go this route, however, because I don't want to disable core comments, as node comment seems to require, and I also want to use Node Queue to create a list of featured letters, and I don't think Node Queue supports comments with core comment module.)

Hi, I'm currently in the planning stage of creating an online presence of a student guide to the university and the city of Ghent. There's one question that keeps popping up: how can you create a guide that is as accurate as possible, and how can you spot most easily what needs an update, a fact check or a rewrite?
I'm exploring a few routes, and I'd like some input and/or hear about your experiences. (This isn't strictly newspaper-related content, but since local newspapers often also try their best to be a guide to the city they cover, I thought I'd post it over here anyway.) Here goes:

I'm currently designing a small college newspaper site using Drupal 6. For now, it is a test site running on a shared hosting system (opensourcehost). I also run several Drupal 5 sites related to my teaching on the same account, and until now the account has managed to handle the load, which I would describe as light usage except during classes, when I can have 25 users at a time.

Looking for a way to gracefully implement an auto-flipping display box of stories. You know, one story for five seconds, then story 2, the story 3, and back to story 1. Something like what you see here. It needn't actually display tabs, only a back and forwards UI. I'd prefer it not to have tabs, in fact.
Has anyone done this? What have you used?
I know there's magic tabs, which seems like it could very well do the job. Just thought I'd seek some advice before diving in.

I just found the Innovation News Installation Profile and wanted to post it here on the Newspaper Group. (I know the issue of newspaper installation profiles has been discussed more than once here, and maybe someone would like to know about it.)
I haven't tried it yet, but will have a closer look when I get time.
Cheers!

Workflow for Blog/Portal
Hello,
I'd like to build a blog network with Drupal. Is there any module that complishes a simple workflow like this:
- contributors blog articles in their blog;
- anyone can comment, author can edit, (editor may have some private discussion about the article);
- editor select an article and display it on homepage, author can no longer edit this post.
If nothing like that exists, is there any combination to do that easily ?
Thanks in advance.

In a few weeks we are going to re-launch our newspaper, and the new site is based on Drupal5. We are still running the install on one of our desktop machines running Ubuntu, so the performance is not close to what we except from the final product.
It would be great if some of you could take a look at the site, and tell me your first impression.

I'd am currently gathering information to help identify the state of the art for publishing websites (those built on Drupal and those built with other technologies). My motivation to create the survey is an upcoming book about using Drupal to build enterprise publishing websites.
Why should you take the time to fill out the survey?
As the About page says:
- There's a chance you'll get a free, signed copy of the book
- There's a chance you'll get credit in the book
- You'll be adding to the knowledge of publishing sites in Drupal (the results will be made public, if the submitter gives permission)
So, take the survey.

Hi,
Just wanted to announce the availability of the first (alpha) release of ProsePoint, a newspaper content management system.
Some things to note:
ProsePoint is a distribution built on top of Drupal 6.
It is currently alpha software and this is the first release. Hence, there are most likely all sorts of bugs and design inefficiencies. Please be welcome to try it, but use at your own risk.
It has the most customisation and add-on functionality of any distribution that I know of. The eventual aim is to have everything ready to go out of the box. No more searching for extra modules or testing of combinations of modules. Just install and go!

I began using Drupal right about the time that D5 launched. Though at the time there were relatively few modules available, I decided it was better from the start to choose the newer version and expect that the contributed module base would develop quickly. I'm glad I made that choice: D5 did develop quickly and D4 modules almost as quickly were left behind.
Read moreCreating flexible news page layouts with Panels2
I'm a latecomer to the Panels party. We've been able to use blocks and regions to accommodate our layout needs for our community websites. But as we work on a project to launch two large newspapers on Drupal later this year, we're looking for ways to enable editors to create and manage special page layouts on the fly, as the changing news demands.
That led to Panels, and after spending some time with Panels 2, I'm blown away.
Here's how Panels solves the problem.

We have a large Drupal 5.1 instance that needs to be upgraded to 5.9.
